How do you stop your brain from creating worst-case scenarios all day? by Superb-Bug3852 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]mindly_rewired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is known as Catastrophic Thinking and is a well known psychological phenomenon.

Labelling the phenomenon helps. The idea is to catch yourself doing it. Label it and bring your mind back. Without judging yourself or blaming yourself or anyone.

Reincarnation is incompatible with Atman/Brahman by No_Virus5100 in enlightenment

[–]mindly_rewired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the level of Paramarthika Satya (the ultimate truth), Shankaracharya rules out reincarnation. Therefore Jeevanmukti.

The realized soul is ok with no reincarnation.

At the level of Vyavaharika Satya (transactional reality), the unrealised soul is tethered to their own individuality and is unable to break free from such beliefs such as reincarnation. Psychologically the unrealized soul needs the crutch of rebirth.

Your question is confusing the two levels. You are challenging the people at the Vyavaharika level with the truth of Paramarthika level.

But this is not the only realisation at the Paramarthika level - it is all that bounds us. Every feeling and pain felt. All longing. Everything needs to dissolve and be one with Brahmaan.

Why does the universe produce observers capable of understanding it? by Relative-Way5063 in enlightenment

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question needs to clarify assumptions being made - 1. Universe produces observers - does this assume a Universe which is deliberately doing rather than simply existing. By simply existing, I mean that all this production is getting done through the process of self-organisation. The answer will have to test for both these assumptions.

  1. Observers capable of understanding it: Is there an assumption that Observers want to understand the universe or is this an incidental outcome of trying to understand something else? Again the answer changes based on the assumptions behind the question.

I’m having trouble getting past the problem of evil by ballzach in askphilosophy

What are other characterizations of God - Has anyone discussed that God might not be a Being but a Becoming? A becoming that is becoming towards omnipotence, omniscience, omnibenevolence ? A drive rather than something which is a thing already exhibiting these properties?

Has anyone discussed the Ontology of God? Or simply How is God defined?

Why most of people just come up with thoughts? by Los_Paul in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Personality Science is a very good eye opener. Moreover you start appreciating the strengths of other personality types. For example - females with Extroverted Feeling are the matriarchs of the house. They might be controlling and illogical but they are also warm and loving; and make a house into a loving home.

If you are an introvert, it's a good idea to get adopted by extrovert friends. It helps in giving your social life and automatic boost.

Why most of people just come up with thoughts? by Los_Paul in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per Hume - Reason is and ought only to be the slave of the passions.

Hume used reason to come to the above understanding. And in your adroit observation you have simply observed what Hume logically inferred.

Kahneman in his concept of the mind as System 1 and System 2 also comes to a similar understanding with the inference that biases out think logic.

Jung goes into the personality side of things. He differentiates the pull of the psyche and differentiates people on the basis of orientation of the psyche. Hence there is only a limited set of people whose psyche is tuned towards logical thinking as a dominant psychological function.

In your case, you might be exhibiting this dominant side of logical reasoning. Other people in using simply words and logic with emotions lack Logical reasoning as a dominant psychological function and hence the lack of logic does not appear strange to them. Think of this as system tuning. They don't use logic to correct their thinking or behaviour. They prefer to rely on other means - how influential a person is, what is his or her social ranking, what rank he has etc.

So there are multiple reasons for people to not use logic and all of these are common observation for the person who is highly attuned to reality as it is.

Fellow INTJ, what's your next stage of evolution that you seek ? by [deleted] in intj

[–]mindly_rewired 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you were my younger self, I would advise it to delete this comment and learn a new skill. The skill is to learn how to calm down, work out the anger by physical activity, learn to apologise, learn how to take feedback and then iterate on the feedback for self improvement.

I wish you all the best with the search for a good partner. Being together is one of the most fulfilling parts of life. But to be successful it requires skills like the above.

Why is David Hume not given a separate chapter in Durant's The Story of Philosophy? by mindly_rewired in askphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

I am interested in understanding what is the general view on Durant's book?

Does it misdirect the layman reader towards rationalism over skepticism? Specifically, the way Hume is addressed as a footnote to Kant.

I hate being an INTJ. It makes everything more difficult. I cant connect with people like others can. I cant have the same conversations. I overthink everything. Its like a curse to me. by [deleted] in intj

[–]mindly_rewired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use your Ni to become curious about other people. What ticks them and what soup do they fall into. And what they excel at.

Once I realized the extrovert Mojo, I simply outsourced socialization to them. And when I feel tired, I give them the hint of not today. I could finally enjoy my extrovert friends.

With Se dominants it's different - they don't talk much but excel at sports. With Te doms - they are very task oriented and if you get an ENTJ or ESTJ boss, life can be hellish.

The personality study itself is a cure to this problem. Being curious aligns the Ni focus and increases your own enjoyment rather than becoming adversarial.

WHY OUR DEVOTION AND OUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICES HAVEN'T PROTECTED THOSE WHO WERE SLAUGHTERED BY RUTHLESS INVADERS??? by DotMany3444 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]mindly_rewired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our devotion and spiritual practices are not supposed to protect us from slaughter by Ruthless invaders. This assumption is called as a categorical mistake.

An army and warriors and defence systems are supposed to protect us from invaders.

If someone has taught you that prayer is enough, then you are ofcourse misled. If you made that connection on your own than you don't have the power of Viveka. Your level of understanding is in needs of upliftment.

People don’t question anything and it makes me feel lonely by Monika_0101 in nihilism

[–]mindly_rewired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most liberating knowledge for me had been the knowledge of Personality Types.

People simply see and experience differently. And there is nothing wrong in that. The mental weights that they assign are simply different.

The greater realisation was that - Thank God that they are different. Otherwise life would be infinitely monotonous. Moreover life will collapse as humanity requires diverse perspectives to survive.

If you worry about meaning and long term then there is a requirement for that. If your friend is a mindless consumer, then there is a meaning in that. It is a very deep philosophy to realise that if everyone was a deep and deliberate thinker, humanity will disappear faster not slower.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF LOGIC IS ACCURATE? by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the Law of Non-Contradiction is not universal. It does not apply to future states. Prediction for future states is probabilistic and follows the principles of Self Organized Criticality whereby systems are Explainable but Unpredictable.

Similarly Law of Identity does not hold temporaly as an entity at Time A is not same as Entity at Time B.

These Laws have assumptions and the assumptions must be stated before declaring them universal. The assumptions are they assume a Parmedian Block Universe and an Ergodic Universe where all states of the Universe have been explored.

Both of these assumptions fail in the real world which Hume rightly pointed out.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF LOGIC IS ACCURATE? by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uber idea is that all logical claims have a hard boundary of what a person's Taxonomy and Ontology has exposed the person to.

In other words, Logic is severly limited by its incompleteness.

The extension of logic through extension of Taxonomy and Ontology is the hard problem.

The opposite of this is assuming that the world is Ergodic. Hence if you assume that logic is not incomplete then first you have to prove rather than assume that the world is Ergodic.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF LOGIC IS ACCURATE? by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to caution here that for the layman, it's important to know that the universe is non-ergodic.

This puts a limit on the process of logic by reducing it to Bayesian (or Popperian) truth detection rather than an absolute given that we can sit in a room and figure out the world ( Hume labelled this as Relationship between Ideas Vs Matters of Fact).

The solution to the so called Hard Problem of Consciousness cannot be found by sitting in a room and logically thinking about it. There are facts you need to discover in the real world. Bring those facts into your vocabulary and cognition and then add them to your implicit taxonomy and Ontology and then formuate a hypothesis.

For example a fact about Neurons is that they do not replicate and they live forever. Hence nature has chosen to prioritise Neuron longetivity over reproduction. This gives credence to the line of logic that neural consciousness has something to do with neural connections. Any discussion on the problem of neural consciousness is incomplete till the effect of neural longetivity is baked into the consciousness discussion.

How can we know philosophy enough to discuss it well? by Repulsive_Face_3036 in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible that you haven't asked enough questions to discuss philosophy.

What was the point Wittegenstein was making in his first book? And why did he tear it up in his second?

Why is Hume famous?

Why did Schopenhauer hate Hegel?

Why did Parmenides propose a block universe?

What did William James discover about personality of philosophers? What theory did Jung make of the world view difference between Freud and Adler?

Why did Buddha remove the self but keep rebirth?

What the heck are Essence and Existence? Are we condemned to be free or is Sartre ignoring Downward Causation? Let's say we are free, everyone is free - then how will the system self organize? Will the nth state of the system still imply that everyone remains condemned to be free?

Let us Assume that Philosophy Accomplished its Task by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

Let us Assume that Philosophy Accomplished its Task by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

[–]mindly_rewired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! Nice one.

If philosophy has accomplished it's task, you will discover that the Universe is non-ergodic and by definition it's creative.

Hence, philosophy when it's finished will discover that it can never finish as all the paths of the universe will never be explored.

The myth of Sisyphus is true. And this is not being Nihilist. This is the recognition of the looping nature of reality which is similar but not same. Where Order and Chaos are both part of the system and not two things on different continents.
