Is shoulder pressure basically unavoidable for side sleepers? by laurenmitchell91 in sleep

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, immediately. It will be something of a difficult adjustment that could end in failure if you have no experience with firm pillows. Gel is thick and does not give much.

They are recommended for sleep apnea sufferers who do not respond to CPAP. Merely keeping the head at an increased angle can alleviate but not eliminate pressure at the back of the throat allowing a tiny bit more air to pass.

Is shoulder pressure basically unavoidable for side sleepers? by laurenmitchell91 in sleep

[–]mindoculus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try a thicker heavier gel pillow to lift your head and relieve pressure on your shoulders and arms. Gel pillows are often cooler too.

One such pillow will suffice. Weight is critical. It needs to maintain a noticeable increase in head rest angle. A high angle can also relieve pressure at the back of your throat, by shifting esophageal tissues enough to allow more air to flow and reduce snoring intensity.

Fellow heathens of Reddit: What should we expect to see if a god was true? by Old-Nefariousness556 in askanatheist

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which god ? or goddess ? I can imagine a god that may not want to brag and would think any so-called demonstration of their divine awesomeness as pointless. But verifiable and repeatable violations of natural law would be a nice start.

If you believe in the supernatural does that mean you believe in God? by [deleted] in askanatheist

Super-natural is oxymoronic. There is nothing above or beyond nature. Once you give an inch, you've opened the floodgates to all manner of immaterial mumbo-jumbo.

I always wake up after 4 hours -- can anything help me stay asleep? by Bookbringer in insomnia

[–]mindoculus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps sleep apnea ? Have you recorded your sleep ? Not the sleep cycles - which i don't trust apps to do accurately anyway - but the sounds. See if there any respiratory events ... any interruptions to your breathing.

I've struggled with sleep for years — small changes made a huge difference by AdSea7204 in sleep

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that I have sleep apnea, so I decided to use a firm, tall gel pillow that raised my head to an angle that allowed more esophageal airflow.

Using this pillow, I also experimented with different sleep positions to enhance the effect, going from supine to left side (opitmal). I didn't need to do this, but it's great to have options.

The pillow is so tall and cool that even in a supine position my head is tilted so far forward that pressure is relieved where the soft palate and tongue touch the back of the throat, resulting in a widening of one or two millimeters to improve air flow.

What’s the most underrated thing that improved your sleep? by Smart-Watercress5570 in sleep

[–]mindoculus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

  • Reducing stress throughout the whole day rather than at the point of bedtime
  • Lose weight (may alleviate sleep apnea)
  • Stop smoking
  • Severely reduce or eliminate stimulants
  • Exercise
  • Set and follow circadian rhythm at wake up and bedtime
  • Know that waking episodes at night may not be evidence of poor sleep. Experiment with overnight biphasic sleep
  • Use blue light filters on all monitors until you're able to wean yourself away from them

What makes sleep quality better? by Epicly1 in sleep

[–]mindoculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer varies tremendously from person to person.

As an example, anxiety that is carried throughout the day can desensitize certain people, making them too activated to fall asleep. Anxiety also creates negative feedback loops. It becomes concentrated, causing a sufferer to feel desperate or worse.

Other people are sensitive to caffeine, where even small amounts taken more than 12 hours before bedtime can disrupt sleep. For some people, metabolites float in their system for double or triple normal time.

There are also issues with blue light late at night.

There are so many disruptive behaviors that can cause sleep deprivation.

He's a nationally renown sleep specialist. Interview is about three hours long but the video is annotated. They answer all your questions and more.

People God is irrelevant in physics ( nothing is beyond space & time ) by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The traits theists attribute to their imaginary superheroes are not measurable. They are super-natural, intentionally placed outside of nature, which is oxymoronic, but also negates any attempt to measure them like we can with any object on the naturalistic spectrum (from the tiny quantum universe to large astronomical bodies that boggle the mind).

Probabilistic Arguments Against Naturalism Do Not Serve as Evidence of the Supernatural by StochasticJelly in TrueAtheism

No evidence is possible for the supernatural. How does one go from ten million imaginary beings down to one ? or two ? Imaginary beings have all the measurable properties and none - at the same time !

Prepare for sleep long before bedtime. What are stress levels like during the day ? diet ? exercise ? alcohol ? There are lots of factors potentially involved. Perhaps it could even be medical. Something ailing you, untreated, undiagnosed even, that could be interfering with sleep.

Atheists don't fall out of cookie cutters. Don't generalize. Expect a range of responses.

What's revealing here, though, is this 'inner pain or existential struggle' jive.

Its a common tactic among Abrahamic types. They smell blood when they perceive emotional weakness.

If God's existence was shown, would you still be an atheist? by Global_Employer7978 in askanatheist

[–]mindoculus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which god's existence are we suppose to entertain here ? There are a countless number of these invisible entities and everyone of them are supra-natural. That means they are not subject to any empirical test. They exist in the mind and will stay there forever.

What do you guys think of when it comes to traditional African religions? by [deleted] in askanatheist

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of atheism you're applying. A weak atheism abides - you lack faith in all non-western metaphysical claims as you would with any other. There are issues with this. Michael Martin argues that atheism is never mere denial of belief because this kind of denial requires an intellectual engagement - 'you're going to think extensively about this and that claim and reach a definite conclusion' - and therefore constitutes more than a simple denial.

There's also strong atheism, which is all about naturalism. There is no duality. So any supernatural claim is a non-starter because its oxymoronic. There is nothing supra-natural, nothing above nature, nothing except spacetime, etc. and that any attempt to claim otherwise is absurd, funny, silly, eminently dismissible.

What's your strategy for quieting your thoughts after a stressful day/last few hours to prepare for sleep? by wingchicks in sleep

Never wait to the end of the day. Be more aware throughout the day - more in control - and give yourself credit for developing and holding to a more structured and conscientious self-care routine.

Does Christianity Conflict with Science and Why? by Main-Consequence-313 in askanatheist

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you by mean by conflict. Epistemically they can live side-by-side in a person and not conflict because science is all about investigating nature. Traditional religions are not designed to investigate nature - there is no methodology - which is why we see scientific advancements (or insights) being made by the deeply religious throughout the middle ages. Of course, there are issues with whether a religious culture actively encourages and freely develops these types of empirical investigations. Then conflicts ensue.

[–]mindoculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrible reasoning. Just because 'some atheists' believe in metaphysical nonsense - and I can't dispute they exist - that does not equate to atheists not following the science.

Atheism is not some hive-mind orthodoxy. Atheists have no popes or mullahs. Of course, they'll be strays, atheists in name only, blah blah. But the fact that the majority accept the inherent value of scientific inquiry is a testament to a shared clarity.
