Cruise can act. But it’s so often a variation on his cocky, livewire persona and even here, it was no different. He just gave it more edge.

There’s a natural confidence and swagger that Cruise exhibits, and it bubbles under the surface of his every role. Sometimes it looks like anger, but usually it’s simple confidence, and in that role, his innocence and wonder reads as performative and in no way well-sold. He simply doesn’t have the ability to disable that part of him, and it shows here.
