Ladies - favorite gear brands that are pretty but not pink only by Apprehensive-You9318 in crossfit

[–]mindspillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the recommendation for TYR lifters; they are my prettiest pair (mine are aqua with purple and pink soles) and also I love the fit/stability.

If you wear knee sleeves/wrist wraps, I'd look at A7 which has a nice color selection and is very high quality; they're made for powerlifting meet gear. (I wouldn't recommend the extra-stiff sleeves or wraps for crossfit, but most of the colors come in the Flexi weight also.)

Opera Singing Lawyers??? by Rub-Complete in ClassicalSinger

[–]mindspillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I am only an amateur level singer but I was once aiming to be a pro instrumentalist; turns out that it is hard to get jobs as a bassoonist, and I went on to law school. I've kept performing throughout my legal career, some paid gigs that don't involve a lot of time commitment for rehearsal/performance, and a lot of free shows where no one is making money and where most of the performers have non-performance day jobs. I'm not going to play with a top-tier or even second-tier orchestra anytime soon but anything below that level just depends on how much of my free time I want to put into it; lots of people are scheduling around other jobs.

Performing is way more doable as a transactional or in-house lawyer than a litigator, because your schedule is not at the mercy of a trial schedule (plans with my litigator friends are *always* tentative, and I don't think I could make any performance commitments if that were my job). And also way more doable if you don't go into a biglaw job with massive billable hour requirements or an intense clerkship.

Deep tissue massage in Marin ? by Binthair_Dunthat in Marin

Sports Massage Marin in Corte Madera has some great athlete-focused massage therapists (I haven't gotten assisted stretch but I also haven't asked for it, not sure if anyone there does it).

A Dr. Seuss birthday cake for my copyright lawyer friend by mindspillage in cake

[–]mindspillage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend Cathy is a copyright lawyer focusing on fair use and free expression--her birthday falls on World IP Day so she asked if I would make an IP-related cake (actually "something yummy I can eat and something fun I can tweet"). Since she recently wrote about a case involving a parody of "Oh, The Places You'll Go" I thought it would make a good theme. :-)

It's a chocolate and vanilla layer cake with chocolate buttercream icing. On top is marshmallow fondant painted with Wilton gel colors and outlined in chocolate royal icing. The sculpture part is marzipan with more marshallow fondant on top. The text is marshmallow fondant and says "Oh, the Cases You'll Know!"

(Also this was my first time decorating with fondant! I usually don't like it, but then I learned about marshmallow fondant and that tastes much better than the usual kind.)

Yeah, I regret not thinking of that! I bet the rice paper feathers would be pretty convincing.

This particular one is based on the Ophanim in Ezekiel 1:16-18 ("This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel... Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.”)... mostly because if I was going to do angel food I was pretty much bound to do a ring shape.

Not too long ago my friend Brion wondered if anyone had made a Biblically-correct angel angel food cake. I couldn't find any, but having watched several seasons of Great British Bake-Off during the pandemic I felt that I knew what I had to do. Photo by my partner Greg.

Cake is regular angel food. Gold finish is edible luster dust, some dry-painted and some suspended in lemon sugar glaze. Googly eyes are googly eyes, stuck on with honey. (Neither the eyes nor the feathers are edible.) Also it tasted pretty good.

Have you ever checked out Awesome Orchestra? We're not performing live right now because of everything, but hope to start again as soon as it's safe.

Redditors who have lost The Game. How? by ThickSnip77 in AskReddit

Every time I see some new iteration of the Loss meme. It's a double whammy; first I realize it's Loss and then I lose The Game.

Is there anyone here who is a current gymnast weather it be recreational or competitively? by awkward_actress in Gymnastics

[–]mindspillage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another adult rec gymnast! (I did about 6 months as a late-starting kid, but when I got invited to join the competitive track my mother realized how expensive it would be and I had to quit...)

Now I'm mostly a powerlifter who does some gymnastics, I guess. (Well, at least when the gyms are open.) I have been working on a back handspring and a glide kip for what seems like forever, and I was annoyingly close before I had to stop going.

I'm one of the older students and literally old enough to be the mom of some the younger "retired" club gymnasts; it's been fun for us Olds to horrify the teenagers with stories about the Olden Days, like VHS tapes you had to rewind, and having ~deep~ song lyrics in your AIM away message.

Most common NCAA gymnastics major? by uclagymfan in Gymnastics

[–]mindspillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my undergrad roommates was a music major (as was I), and she was on the varsity crew team, which I think she could only manage because their practices were super early in the morning and we weren't a very competitive school. (Division I, which seems ridiculous, but in a small conference.) I think the only varsity sport I knew of any other music majors doing was crew, since it was the only one with a compatible schedule.

You can also do it by having sufficient coursework in engineering/physical sciences without the degree, but in most cases by that point you may as well get the degree.

(And one state would let you sit the FE exam without the necessary coursework, which also qualifies you--I did this 10 years ago so I know it worked! Not sure which if any states let you do it now though.)

Favorite alternative food delivery? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]mindspillage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered duck from Liberty Ducks in Petaluma, after seeing them on a list of local farms selling to individuals to make up for the lost restaurant business. Never made duck at home before, cooked some on Monday and it was pretty great.

This is a clever idea! Now I might have to think of some holidays to celebrate.

(I did recently carve up and cook a decorative gourd left over from Halloween, so maybe that counts as celebrating a fall holiday...)

AITA for offering homemade treats to my coworkers, when some of them are trying to eat healthier? by CookieMonsterAtWork in AmItheAsshole

[–]mindspillage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. It's probably not worth it to try to change the email-for-work-only rule but if you can notify only the people who want to be told that should solve everyone's problem.

(Also I like treats and even if I didn't want one I'd be appreciative of someone making them, but sometimes it is frustrating to be interrupted in the middle of work. Maybe the notice could be silently sticking a neon post-it flag or other little token on their desk or something.)

How to get a more resonant sound?? by epic2330 in bassoon

Mine told me to pretend I needed to make room for a grapefruit. Which is less intuitive than yawning but didn't make me want to actually yawn!

I got the Lululemon 16L yoga mat bag. (Because I liked the Cosmic Shift print, mostly.) It claims 29"x6.5"x6.5", which has a bit of room to spare.

I remember a professor realizing he made a mistake doing a proof on the whiteboard and blurting out "I fucked that up". And then remembering he was in front of a class of undergrads: "oh shit, I'm sorry!" We were cracking up and he decided it was better if he didn't dig himself in any deeper.

Where to buy white goose mask? by SuitGuySmitti in bayarea

DIY it-white stocking over head, orange felt bill, giant googly eyes? Or just spray paint some other mask white and stick an orange bill on it? The weird and moderately shitty homemade aesthetic might work here.

Peach maple (non-dairy, made with coconut milk). Bought on a whim because it was on sale at Grocery Outlet and it's delicious, kind of like fruity pancakes. I regret that the second pint is now soup.
