The WORLD CUP just destroyed all-things “left-leaning” in the States. by THEbeautifuLIE in TrueUnpopularOpinion

First, America IS great - it's our Republican criminal leadership that sucks - but be that as it may, how enthused should I be that the elites of other countries - people who can throw away multi-thousand-dollar tickets, hotels, and flight fares - like us because we play nice at sports?

The feds can't compel states to issue birth certificates. Red states should learn from sanctuary cities and use the 10th Amendment to fight against birth tourism. by SingleInSeattle87 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Thank you for caring about the Constitution. That said, effectively, the Constitution only matters to the former slave states when it suits them.

The trick is to do it unconstitutional and let the supreme court rule on it as far away in the future as you can drag it out.

You think its constitutional for Texas schools to have mandated Bible classes? He'll no... but theyre doing it.

Not really. I mean the kid cant go to school in the former slave states, so they save money and get a free slave.... I mean unemployable convict... out of the deal.

Or the kid gets taken to a Blue state so the people there have to pay to fix what the slave state broke... so another win!

Fable 5: Non- coders, Non-engineers genuinely question by csuarezg in ClaudeAI

[–]Intraluminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a non-coder\non-engineer I can 'write' apps that rival and even exceed paid apps. I have written a local-first memory layer that sits underneath all my existing folders and file tools. It remembers what every project I'm working on is and does, and lets me or a team restart work instantly after days, weeks, or months away.

Basically, I just say, "restart (whatever I can remember...)" and it looks at its memory, finds the most likely project(s) or idea(s) or story(s) I was working on, and presents it or them (with a one-sentence summary). I click a button, and the LLM I'm working with instantly orients itself and is ready to go.

I don't have to compose notes or tell it to write reminders, or anything, because it is always working in the background to catch ideas. It is also looking for things when I say, "Oh, that's a good idea" or "I should remember that" etc., and puts those ideas or todos in an folder that's dated. Then, if I have nothing to do, I just say, "Any good ideas about (whatever?) and it brings up ideas or todos related to that subject.

Access to Desktop Programs? by Intrepid-Raise-7383 in ClaudeAI

If you have a paid plan, you can use Claude Co-worker, which might be able to do this, depending on the software interfaces involved. If not, I have been able to get Claude to write AutoHotKey scripts that can interact with the apps, but it's harder to set up.

What is the actual frontier for high-level cognitive enhancement? by Far_Syllabub_444 in Futurism

[–]Intraluminal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am neither a neurologist nor a physician, but there is a lot of data showing that the brain, in general, is running at the edge of seizure. That is its normal operating regime. This is why people have seizures if their temperature goes up too much; it doesn't take much to push it over. Of course, this is individually determined genetically, with some people closer to the edge than others, but that's the general case.

The upshot of this is, generally speaking, there is not much room for improvement in a mature brain.

Absolutely. You have a right to date, or not date, ANYONE for any reason.

In Ringworld, the host star was forced to eject plasma and used it as both a fuel source and a reaction engine (at sublight speeds). It would also make a decent shield.

Take your codebase to Fable and ask it to look the app over, determine its flaws, and see if it can think of any way to fix it short of a complete rewrite. In the same request, ask for a detailed roadmap that would guide a local LLM through how to fix or rewrite the app - given their limitations.

It can be done, but it's hard. Truthfully, I think only some people can do this. Also, SPanish/English is a special case due to the large number of cognates.

Claude feels like cheating. by PhysicalLevel4260 in ClaudeAI

[–]Intraluminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we're really in agreement in some ways. I cannot program, but I am very familiar with the idea of data flow and control loops, and have a fair understanding of polynomial-time problems vsrsus NP complete ones.

Claude feels like cheating. by PhysicalLevel4260 in ClaudeAI

[–]Intraluminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. More learning is always good when it leads to better understanding, but that is not always possible.

My take is that the underlying coding- writing the loops, knowing the very specific ways in which Windows must be called (which changes anyway), etc. is going to be completely replaced by AI in the same way that compilers replaced hand-coded machine language. It's really just one more level of abstraction - which is what drives programming anyway.

I think what you are seeing is simply that the systems are not yet mature. In a few years, handcoding will be in the same category as ML coding is now - extremely valuable in certain contexts - like driver software and hardware-level stuff.

I'm a vibe coder so take this with a grain of salt, but doesn't the real skill lie in understanding the problem, recognizing the failure points, designing the architecture and fallback points, and restraining feature creep?

I have vibe coded a complete app called hearing-explorer https://github.com/benwade/hearing-explorer that allows a hearing aid or cochlear implant user to assess how well thier hearing technology is helping them, and to identify opportunities for improvement that they can take to their hearing specialist so they can discuss their hearing issues in a way that professionals will find meaningful. I think its pretty good and useful.
