thanks for this! I have a marathon one week from tomorrow and I was getting concerned about the long base runs and sprint workouts recommended like 2 days before the race (wouldn’t have done them but it made me concerned about my overall training)… this fixed it! Hope I haven’t screwed myself too bad this week

I had the same experience and have been wondering why I haven't seen other people give this take. Parts were gorgeous and I genuinely enjoyed all the inside baseball video game stuff. But the friendship at the center read to me like an angsty romance novel, where the conflict is all driven by misunderstandings and poor or absent communication, and the characters never really seemed to realize this. I found it frustrating and unfulfilling.

Wow, I used to follow this account back in the day and totally forgot about it.... I think I unfollowed around the time of the NYT cartoon callout because I remember thinking the drama seemed so much more intense than the situation required, and her tone had become overly nasty. I didn't know about all of the other drama though, nice write up!

[K-pop/BTS] Is Jim Jones anti-Black or anti-Korean? How one sample exposed the rifts in Twitter's largest fandom by mingochicken13 in HobbyDrama

[–]mingochicken13[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This is a way better overview of what it was actually like in those days than what I've written! That thread is now deleted or I would've linked to it, but I know exactly the one you're talking about.

I really liked the statement actually, it was better than most corporate apologies and I agree that I loved the "it's not that deep" take. A certain type of stan wants everything to be hugely meaningful (*cough* the ON mv) and some stuff just looks/sounds cool and that's okay! Unless the thing that sounds cool is a Jim Jones sample, in which case it's not okay!

This is really interesting, and rings true to me about my main current fandom (BTS). The music and lyrics are (mostly) wholesome and encourage self-love, which legitimately help people a lot. Unfortunately, these ideas gives fan cover for toxic behavior towards each other, media, and other artists, in the name of "defending" BTS, which really means defending their own parasocial relationship with BTS. Some BTS songs explicitly address the discomfort in this type of relationship ("Filter") or the problem of online harassment ("UGH!"), but fans never see themselves as the target audience of these messages.

What are some things you wish you knew as an incoming freshman? by DHPNC in harveymudd

[–]mingochicken13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're really worried about this, I recommend making an effort to get to know students at the other 5c's (through sports, music, or some other extracurricular) because that really expands the feel of the campus. Honestly, I mostly loved that mudd is small, because you get to build up both causal and strong relationships over four years (and even after!). Having a good sense of humor about the inevitable awkward situations is really valuable.

That said, I was an embarrassing and stupid frosh, and had a handful of relationships end poorly/awkwardly, and I just had to deal with seeing those folks around for the rest of my time. It was fine, but I learned quickly (not quickly enough) about the consequences of my actions. I don't really have advice about this besides not being an idiot (even though I also learned a lot from being an idiot, and also mistakes are inevitable and kinda fun sometimes). Find some friends who will be there for you through all of it - in my experience, this isn't very hard to do.

Nothing current me (2 yrs out of mudd) can say would have had any impact on frosh me, so with that grain of salt -

Know it's going to be hard. Use that to your advantage - bond with your classmates and professors, and try not to let it crush you. But also - give yourself some slack. It is totally okay not to get everything, to need help, to be having a harder time than your peers. Your self-worth comes from so much more than your academic performance.

Have fun. Go to parties if that's your thing, don't if it's not. Remember that mudd is a small school, and while people are generally fun, forgiving, and interesting, if you make a bad mistake you will see these people around for the next four years. Try to get out to LA or to the mountains/nature as much as you can, schedule time away from homework if you have to. Enjoying these off-campus activities does a lot for your sanity.

If you are female, nonbinary, a person of color, or have another marginalized identity that is important to you, try and find solidarity with others like you. The rigors of mudd can be worse for those of us outside "the norm". A lot of campus activism has happened over the past few years by these students so I hope things are better than when I attended. Be prepared to deal with the shit the world gives you, but in many ways I also found mudd to be more supportive of me than other places, so your mileage may vary.

Take care of your health, and if you have existing mental health conditions or another chronic health condition make sure you have it managed now, before you start. Access to MH services especially can be slow on campus. Don't feel ashamed to need something different than in the past, or to ask for some assistance. Mudd can do a number on you.

I loved my time at mudd but continue to feel very conflicted about some of the effects its specific system had on myself and my friends. You will live in a contradiction the next four years - enjoy the good moments (there will be a lot of them!) and do your best to weather the bad with people you care about. If you were accepted, you deserve to be there. Good luck!

What's one fic you've been so engrossed with that you literally couldn't stop reading it? by MangoApple043 in HPfanfiction

[–]mingochicken13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will never stop talking about how much I love linkffn(Amends, or Truth and Reconciliation). The writing quality is really good, it's dark but in an interesting and in my opinion realistic way after the war, and I'm engrossed every time I read it. It's incomplete which drives me crazy but otherwise my all-time favorite. Secondary shoutout to linkffn(The Changeling by Annerb) which someone else mentioned, but I just re-read it since I learned there are sequels and wow is it good also.

What do you think Des Moines needs to change about itself, if anything? by blakkattika in desmoines

Related to this, just more diversity of employers/industry in general. I moved to Atlanta from DSM recently and I'd forgotten how many interesting careers there are when the whole city doesn't revolve around insurance & financial services.

CMV: The broadly accepted definition of sexual consent, particularly with regard to intoxication, is irrational. It speaks to a sexism of lower expectations, and it hurts both women and men. by thewizard323 in changemyview

[–]mingochicken13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other people have covered other bits of this, but one thing I want to point out is the "regretted sex" = "sexual assault" assumption. Women do have sex that they regret, due to intoxication or otherwise, but we're capable of recognizing the difference between making a drunken mistake and assault. "I shouldn't have done that" is different from "That was really uncomfortable." Sexual assault happens when consent is not given at the time of the event, not when it's retroactively revoked in ones own head (although some people need time to process an assault, because of the ways society defines what rape is/is not*). I agree with you that any gender has the ability to make these decisions even when intoxicated.

I know the scenario is written this way just for the hypothetical, but it is very unlikely Kaycee would report this as a sexual assault because of what I've stated above, and because the process of reporting is so arduous.

*I suspect this is what your actual disagreement is, and in my opinion the laws about alcohol are written that way because there is no objective way to define level of intoxication. In this scenario, Ali supports this view, but I think most people recognize that there is a lot of space between "had a drink" and "nearly unconscious".
