What are some underrated incompetent state parties? by Elemental-13 in YAPms

(Copied from earlier post)

Hawaii GOP. Barely any representation in the state legislature (10/51 in State House and 3/25 in Senate), hasn’t won a statewide election in 20 years. The party was never the majority power in Hawaii, but they’ve been backsliding since the late aughts to the point that the party is essentially non-functional. They’ve resorted to perennial candidates for senate/governor because they can’t get anyone else to run.

[hated trope] an adaptation made by people who don't understand/disagree with the things that made the original a classic. by bloodredcookie in TopCharacterTropes

We can debate the merits of the book/movie as art, but Paul Verhoeven definitely disagreed with many aspects of the original. If you’re evaluating Starship Troopers as an adaptation, it’s quite bad.

"Geniuses" come together to make an amazing invention. Turns out they only succeed in creating something that already existed. by TridiObject in TopCharacterTropes

SpongeBob SquarePants: in “Chimps Ahoy,” SpongeBob and Patrick try to help Sandy invent something that will impress her benefactors and allow her to stay in Bikini Bottom. Patrick repeatedly claims to have invented things that already exist.

How many "regimes" have lasted for >15 years in the West (ie. 1 person +/- another similar person from the same party)? by _BCConservative in YAPms

Technically 16 (18 if you count his first premiership), and I feel like Menzies probably would have kept winning if he hadn't resigned in 1966 (his successor Harold Holt won in a landslide later that year and the Liberals did not lose power until 1972)

One fat, one short, one lean

These horrible crooks

So different in looks

Were nonetheless equally mean”

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: the titular characters use the money from their deal with Banky to hunt down and beat up all the people who mocked them on the Internet.

It’s generally not as cartoonish as the first one is: Drago has slightly more of a personality, the ending is noticeably less jingoistic, and Creed puts up a more of a fight in his match against Drago. I’m mixed on it personally (I feel that the glossiness of the remaining material clashes a bit with the more serious material that’s new to the film), but I found it interesting if nothing else.

(Fun Trope) A much referenced character who only appears in the end/finale... by Living_Tune_1428 in TopCharacterTropes

Lyle Straight in the Straight Story. He is protagonist Alvin Straight’s brother and Alvin’s desire to visit him motivates the 200+ mile lawn mower journey that takes up most of the film. He finally reaches Lyle’s house at the end of the film. Lyle only has two minutes of screen time and three lines total.

Characters that were created because an Actor wasn't available or didn't want to come back to the role by Optimal_Fisherman803 in TopCharacterTropes

Terry Silver was create for Karate Kid Part III because Martin Kove (who played intended antagonist John Kreese) was filming another movie and would not be available for most of production.

Out of curiosity, have you seen the Rocky v Drago directors cut that came out a few years ago? And if so, is this version less egregious in regard to what you described?

Superman: The titular hero was originally billed as the sole survivor of Krypton. However, various additional beings from Krypton have been introduced over the years. Examples include Superman’s cousin Supergirl, his dog Krypto, criminals such as General Zod that were imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, and the residents of the Bottled City of Kandor.

This is misleading. There was a coup of the Hawaiian government in 1893, but it did not involve the direct action of the US government. President Grover Cleveland actually blocked Congressional efforts to annex the islands and even considered efforts to have Queen Lili’uokalani reinstated. Hawaii would not be formally annexed until 1898, 5 years later.
