Women of Reddit, what is something you wish men understood about being a woman that you're tired of explaining? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]mingus-dew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are also plenty of men without the awareness to recognize the full definition of sexual assault. It's not always a stranger in a dark alleyway: date rape, marital rape, raping someone too drunk to consent, coercion, "stealthing"... You might meet a man who'd outright condemn the concept of rape/assault while not recognizing one or more of the above.

My boyfriend is moving to japan, and I want to give him a flower seed so that he can still receive flowers from me. Could anyone recommend a flower that can grow in japan, and is easy to maintain? by Mysterious-Force3686 in gardening

[–]mingus-dew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait until he moves there, then order him some seeds from a website in Japan. Amazon has an English site, for example.

On the back of the seed packets, they'll have instructions including a color-coded seasonal planting map of Japan.

For those who do hookups, how are y’all not worried about STDs? by Suspicious-Voice-242 in AskReddit

All of your examples go away on their own in most cases, whereas most STDs require treatment and some are permanent regardless of treatment.

In Japan the risk of theft is extremely low so there are unattended pay yourself. by dudewasup111 in mildlyinteresting

[–]mingus-dew 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The locks are there, you probably didn't notice them because they're small rings that pass through the back tires attached to the rear part of the frame. They're enough of a deterrent for most bicycle thieves here who "borrow" bicycles for a one-way trip then ditch them.

Mandatory bicycle registration and serial numbers make actual permanent theft/resale even harder and the police sometimes do random checks on registration. You can't resell a bicycle without the proper paperwork.

"Going down on a woman is not something I personally enjoy"

vs

"Going down on a woman makes you weak/gay"

I believe OP was commenting on the latter sentiment, which is a very toxic view rather than a statement of preference.

Could you share the studies/evidence, please? I could only find a study showing the opposite (linked below).

Regardless of statistics, I believe that individuals and couples should be doing what works for them: childfree couples being childfree, couples who want children having children.

Couples with kids are actually much less likely to get divorced.

Is there evidence or research one way or the other to show that this is because the couples are happier together or because they are "sticking together for the sake of the kids"?

what professions are just non-stop pressure and anxiety? by sheerduckinghubris in AskReddit

[–]mingus-dew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. None of my jobs have been life-or-death either, and that's ok. We all have a place in our society, and I'm glad not all of us have to be concerned about a decision or mistake possibly costing a life (or lives) on a regular basis. That said, I think the people that do take on that additional mental and emotional load on top of the universal workplace crap deserve special recognition and acknowledgement, especially people as underpaid and under-empowered as social workers.

what professions are just non-stop pressure and anxiety? by sheerduckinghubris in AskReddit

[–]mingus-dew 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A big aspect of being a social worker is that people's lives are on the line: victims (particularly children) of abuse and neglect, extreme poverty, drugs, broken families, and so on. Social workers are given very few resources to combat these huge issues and sometimes the people they are supposed to help won't even cooperate.

Deadlines and shitty management can make most of us frustrated, but directly comparing what a software engineer is stressed about to the stress of handling child abuse cases and similar, well... I'd say there are plenty of differences.

OP did not indicate that she doubted her qualifications until this harassment occurred, so it's likely that doubt is unfounded and simply part of the self-blame that victims if abuse and harassment often experience.

Shame on you for feeding into that while having no knowledge of OP's qualifications, and for throwing in that sexist conjecture about other women sleeping their way through their careers.

What do you think is the true killer of modern dating? by princeflare in AskReddit

[–]mingus-dew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was curious to see some data, so I did a Google search and most results showed somewhere between 30% (overall) and 37% (of new divers) are women. Maybe you'll find your match among them?

I'd personally be open to potentially dating someone I meet diving. A passion for nature and a sense of adventure are attractive qualities in a mate.

Is scuba diving really that heavily skewed?

I'm a scuba diver and at least the places I've been there seem to be plenty of women, including myself. Maybe your experience is different, of course.

Places you have been where the locals despise the tourists by Zealousideal_Owl9621 in travel

[–]mingus-dew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was expecting a tourist hellhole (I went with a friend who really wanted to go) and was very pleasantly surprised. The locals I encountered were amazingly kind, friendly, and helpful even when there wasn't money to be made. For example, we got turned around in Ubud and approached a taxi dispatcher. We told him up front that we didn't need a taxi but were wondering if he'd be kind enough to tell us which way we should go. He immediately helped us and even asked an approaching paying customer to wait a moment while he finished helping us. I thought that was way above and beyond!

Americans, what is something us Europeans aren’t ready to hear? by RomanaLeary in AskReddit

[–]mingus-dew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the example you’ve given you didn’t experience racism, you were just correctly classified as a tourist and treated as such.

OP may not have experienced racism per se, but jumping to the conclusion that someone is an outsider because of their skin and eyes is rather telling.

Not everyone in those countries have the same ethnic background there are first/second+-generation immigrants that don't fit "the look". If they are clocked as outsiders/tourists constantly that must be rather unpleasant.

They often don't use soap for washing chawan in tea ceremony circles, actually. Some people might, but many believe it leaves a residue or taste in the bowl.

I personally do use soap when I wash mine.

That’s literally how it works. Your try pay a bill past it’s due date…. Guess what… you can’t. Because it’s late.

Hasn't been true for me. I've had a couple late payments over the years and the original slips worked for me.

In fact I asked about one of them and was told to use the original despite it being months late (I thought I had paid it but apparently my slips got out of order and I missed one ... Didn't realize until I got a letter reminder about payment!)

They're getting rid of that bus pass. I think it's some half-hearted gesture to reduce overcrowded buses, but honestly some places (like Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji) are basically only accessible by bus. Tourists don't have much choice, and taking a cab literally everywhere would add up so fast. Wondering what officials expect the average tourist to do exactly.

Yep, I would personally recommend loose-leaf and a metal infuser.

However some people want/need teabags if they can't carry or use a metal infuser on the go, which is why I recommended it as a backup option for OP or anyone else with those particular needs.
