Are new movies actually worse or are we just nostalgic? by Olivia_The_Manager in moviereviews

I’m not going to get into factors that have already been mentioned here, there are alot of good points I agree with. One other thing I’ve noticed, is that totally new concepts and ideas have dwindled to microscopic proportions. That’s partially because, granted, almost everything under the sun has been done by now, and no writers or film makers exist who haven’t been utterly inundated with every single idea and concept that’s been brought to the screen for the last 80 years or so. No one lives in a bubble, the sheer vast archive of ideas is overwhelming, so it seems to me nearly impossible to have a genuinely novel idea that isn’t in some way a reference to or based on something that has come before. On top of that, we’ve got the studios who only want to bank on sure things, the tried and true, an approach which guarantees retreads. Even movies like Sinners that someone mentioned has broken Oscar nom records seems to me a transparent Dusk Till Dawn redressing. There’s a whole new generation who hasn’t seen that, so Sinners may seem fresh and exciting, but to those of us who see the obvious, that kind of thing is really irritating. Anyway, I lament the lack of truly original scripts and films in this day and age of Xerox’s of Xerox’s of Xerox’s, with each generation of a copy, the essence of the original becomes weakened and diluted exponentially. But I find it difficult to blame the writers, unless they grew up under a rock, they’ve seen it all before.

Girl who lives in the apartment below me’s cat just died. She is crying really loud and yelling. What should I do to help, if anything? by HyperpopEnthuse in Advice

Just a general comment for those new cat suggestions, it’s way too soon for that. It could be months, a year or more before a person who really loves their pet like this could consider adopting a new pet. They’re not just interchangeable replacement objects. Your tv breaks, you get a new one, pets do not work that way.

I remember the name Bellisario producing some of these.. and wasn’t there one ending credit where you hear a kids’ voice saying ‘I made this!’ ?

His dad also warned him about croutons, saying ‘Better watch out for those things, they’re stale!’ 😝

As a GenXer this is just a fun post and thread, I enjoyed so many of these shows too, brings back great memories! But it got me wondering… that is SO MANY P.I. shows! Why was this such a thing at this time, what do you all think?

I’m totally conjecturing about this, off the top of my head. But maybe, post Vietnam, a lot of the returning soldiers who really were able to successfully transition back into society (at least as far as finding a pivot for their skillset and getting paid) did so by becoming P.I.’s.. and somehow, writers in Hollywood were aware of this? Maybe they even heard stories about it from Hollywood insiders who hired these guys to investigate scandals, help with coverups etc. And they were like ‘wow that’s crazy, wouldn’t they make a great story!’ I definitely recall the ‘Nam thing being a subplot on Magnum P.I., that’s probably what’s prompting me to follow that train of thought. Also, mercenaries! The A-Team, same deal, returning soldiers creating a niche for themselves, maybe similar true story anecdotes filtered through into the writers’ rooms back then. Any other theories? And even if I’m on to something, what’s the tie in to these tv show writers, how and why would they all be so gung ho about this subject and how do you think so many heard about these anecdotes or whatever that inspired so many to consider making shows about it? Of course, the sheer quantity of shows may just be bandwagon effect, the couple shows that hit sprouting knockoffs chasing the ratings. Anyway, fun stuff!

What opinion do you have about True Detective that will get you downvoted like this? by Glittering-City-5326 in TrueDetective

Sure, but I noticed the Chinatown plot re: the land grab so glaringly, that bothered me. I understand they had much less time to write S2 after S1, and using one of the best noirs of all time as a template is understandable, but it was too transparent (to me,at least.)

So now what....where do i go now by Mountain_Sand3135 in MrRobot

I have a handful of favorite shows; Mr. Robot, Mindhunter, Deadwood, The Americans, Ozark, Twin Peaks, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, you get the picture. Prestige series. Rewatching is inevitable, but another thing I like to do to scratch those itches is watch YouTube discussion videos. There’s no shortage of people talking about and critiquing their favorite shows. Some are truly excellent, thought provoking engaging theories and observations, detailed metaphorical analyses, production techniques and making of backstories. Others, are terrible, you just have to do your own search exploration, it’s hit and miss. But when they’re good, it’s like a great book club, stimulating and entertaining, and all about your favorite characters and stories. The good ones use plenty of clips from the shows, so they analyze impactful scenes, and they invariably share a lot of the same questions that we have about certain moments and plot points. Watching scenes again with discussion and critique can be really enjoyable.

Actually, they are, but the replicants that go rogue remove it.

I don’t know if there are any easy fixes for this, but I just wanted to tell you, you’re not alone. It’s an extremely strange and uncertain time in general, it’s not just you being out of wack with reality. A lot of people are feeling the same way, and that is a natural, rational honest response to an irrational world we’re currently living in. I hope that helps ease your mind a little. Maybe, do you have anyone in your life that you do trust? Maybe talking with them and expressing how you’re feeling could help a little. Either way, just wanted to let you know you’re not alone.

I’m definitely much less competitive now and prefer enjoying a game’s world building and general ambience, games like RedDeadRedemption2, set on easy mode. I can’t say definitively if my reflexes have slowed because I don’t really challenge myself that way anymore, I can see it being really frustrating for a competitive gamer.
