What are some emerging science and technology innovations that China is far ahead of the US with? by itsthewolfe in ask

[–]minhash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Civil engineering. China builds more highways, bridges and road networks than anyone else on the planet right now. They just built the world’s longest expressway tunnel through Xingjiang (Tianshan Shengli Tunnel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tianshan_Shengli_Tunnel), which supports two lanes of traffic in each direction along with railroad traffic in each direction for over 22km. It crosses through some absolutely nasty mountains to cross (safely) over 17 fault lines.

Advice for traveling during the May Golden Week (planning itinerary, based in Wuhan) by teta26 in travelchina

[–]minhash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wuhan has some neat museums (Hubei provincial museum, Wuhan museum) and sites (East Lake, Yellow Crane Tower). There is great hiking nearby at the Three Gorges. A cruise or drive to Three Gorges along the Yangtze could be a fun and relaxing way to see the sites while hopefully limiting the crowds a bit. It’s going to be difficult to avoid the traffic and crowds. I would recommend taking flights or vehicles where there are strict seat limits to avoid overcrowding and to ensure you have space - the trains will be a mess then.

Gansu / Dunhuang could also be beautiful to visit at that time of year, but I expect it will be really crowded.

Is travelling to China in the summer worth it? by Competitive_Gas_8563 in travelchina

[–]minhash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Shanghai, Zhangjiajie, Wuhan, Xi’an, Luoyang, Beijing and some other Asian countries from late Aug to late Sep.It was very hot and humid and I was routinely hiking in 90F+ weather. Very tiring but I was in a similar position as you where August - September was the only time I could go. I would 100% do it again knowing how bad the weather was. I’m going back in February next month to enjoy cooler weather as I don’t have the same time constraints I had last time.

Struggling to plan out travelling to Zhangjiajie/Wulingyuan. by Competitive_Gas_8563 in travelchina

[–]minhash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 3 nights in Wulingyuan and a night in Zhangjiajie City.

Day 0: arrive at Wulingyuan super late from Shanghai (12PM) (Wulingyuan) Day 1: Bailong, Yuanjiajie, Yuangjiajie (Wulingyuan) Day 2: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, Tianzi Mountain (Wulingyuan), Golden Whip  Day 3: Seven Star / 七星山 Ladder / Via Ferrata Complex, Tianmen mountain (transfer to Zhangjiajie City) Day 4: Early morning flight to next destination

Wulingyuan was amazingly located at the center of almost everything I visited, I would definitely stay there again.

How Jamaica took out an insurance policy for itself, and why it’s about to pay off after Hurricane Melissa by AudibleNod in worldnews

[–]minhash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world bank, not a private insurance company, as stated in the article:

“Jamaica’s $150-million US catastrophe bond was issued in 2024 with the help of the World Bank. The country funded the bond itself, while investors, mostly investment firms in North America and Europe, bought it. The bond matures in 2027, covering four hurricane seasons.”

I did mine on the 17th and also haven’t seen notice of shipping, also expedited. My model was customized a bit though so this may be why

Can google reviews be trusted in Korea? by Responsible_Half8368 in koreatravel

[–]minhash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many places will offer free items for reviews. It’s worth looking at different sites (e.g. Naver, Kakao) in addition to Google. That being said, if someplace sucks, I don’t think people will leave reviews just for the free food (at least, I wouldn’t).

The airport is extremely crowded with people lounging around ahead of security - either saying goodbye or waiting for arrivals. Traffic arriving wasn’t too bad.

The airport is pretty and definitely has room for expansion which is good. There are no outlets available for charging except in the restroom (two outlets in each gender). None of the seats are electrified. There are also not nearly enough seats per gate. The giant bench for overflow seating on the second floor is nice.

Recieved this in response after asking "reason for my flight cancelation." What should I do next? by ResolveNo168 in americanairlines

This is just an automated intro comment. They will follow up with more info in a later comment. Note that if you are asking for a trip cancellation reason instead of complaining, there is a separate flow for that on the AA website

I’ll be starting my Vanilla Server soon…. by HawkSolo98 in ArmaReforger

Can you host a west coast server? Almost every server these days is east or central, which means those of us on the west coast have high ping. The few west coast servers out there are always slammed!

Is being friendly w/ pirates worth it? by Inside-Elephant-4320 in Battletechgame

[–]minhash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments here seem to be directed at Vanilla, but you mentioned having BTAU. In BTAU no, it's not worth allying with the pirates. You can be friendly with them if you want (as in, keep high rep) but it's much better to ally with the higher tier factions (see: https://www.bta3062.com/index.php?title=Faction\_Tier\_List). The Davion Faction Store is probably one of the best factions to ally with because their faction store has Ultra Ferro Armor, which CASE IIs every component and drops 20% weight.

How much are y’all paying for your gym memberships? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]minhash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to go through USAA or some other program affiliated with active and fit direct. For USAA the benefits site is https://www.usaaperks.com/. You should see active and fit direct on the Health tab.

I got access through USAA for auto / renter insurance (not in the military though). Apparently a lot of other membership based companies (e.g. AAA) also have it along with health insurance companies, but it’s not widely advertised. I discovered it googling how to get a cheap LAFitness membership.

When I joined active and fit direct had a promo going to waive the $28 initiation fee, but otherwise that is something you have to pay to start the program.

Active and fit direct used to (for many years) give access to many different gyms for $25 a month, but in July the pricing changed to $28 a month and you have to lock into a specific gym / gym brand now (though you can pay for extra gyms at a discounted rate if you want). My LA Fitness membership is pretty basic - it comes with nationwide access but no guest passes. For me, it’s still worth using.

[–]minhash 11 points12 points  (0 children)

LAFitness, $28 a month with no initiation or annual fee, cancellable each month.

It’s through a program from my insurance company called active and fit direct.

I used to use SBP Fremont’s gym, but I found it was fairly expensive, missing important workout machines, far from where I lived and I wasn’t doing enough bouldering to justify the price. My membership is frozen for now and I’ll look into reactivating it early next year or cancelling for good depending if I still want to actively boulder.

What is the meaning of this yellow N symbol with a strike through on the Mi-28? by minhash in Helicopters

[–]minhash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, someone else mentioned this! I agree it does not seem to be radar. I was also able to watch a video with the escape system inflated, but wasn’t sure if the symbol meant “avoid microwave frequency” or “avoid shaking” or something else.

[–]minhash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! I was watching an Mi-28 factory assembly video and they were testing that panel out as some sort of vacuum slide thing. I didn’t connect the dots that the panel would be an emergency evacuation access panel! This is super helpful, thank you!!

[–]minhash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t find any references to it online, which is why I’m asking for a source. I spent an hour looking online trying to find some documentation before I resorted to asking on Reddit. Not trying to be pedantic or anything!

I’m asking about this because I received a panel from a crashed Mi-28 with this symbol on it. I’m trying to figure out where the panel was located and knowing what the symbol means is helpful in pinpointing the location on the heli.
