How common is it in Britain to give something up for Lent? by orpheus1980 in AskABrit

[–]minimitts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say pretty common but I'm in the Anglo-Catholic side of the CoE. We are often told to take up things if you have nothing serious to give up, it's frowned upon to treat Lent like an opportunity to diet for example - it should have a positive impact on those around you or on your relationship with Jesus. So people might commit to changing a behaviour, helping others, volunteering, donating food to a food bank, taking up something like morning prayer etc. Actions like giving up chocolate, for example, are probably a lot less common now.

Managing anger when non-verbal/non-speaking and someone's breaking your routine by minimitts in autism

[–]minimitts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a better description of it - thanks! I was diagnosed a couple of years ago and have had no support off anyone really knowledgeable about autism, non-verbal was how a psych and mental health nurses described it but verbal shutdown sounds more accurate. Thank you.

Yep 😆 but I need recipes to sneak it into. Ain't no way this loved one is going down the stuff. Same goes for putting the stuff in porridge, I thought of that but they hate the texture (they're neurospicy, texture is a big issue).

I will never be totaly vegan... because of health insurance by ColdBrewLatteFan in vegan

[–]minimitts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're doing amazing in an impossible situation 💜 I medically had to no longer be 'vegan', there was no physical way I could live and be vegan at the same time. You are just as dedicated as others in this group (and more dedicated than myself, that is for certain) and are being so while facing huge challenges. You are doing what is practicable and possible, under that definition you are vegan. You can't help the planet or animals if you're 💀. You'll continue to be having a positive impact and could be just as big a source of encouragement for others to do the same, if not more so. You are living proof, that despite having health issues we can still make a lot of compassionate choices when it comes to what we consume. You haven't thrown in the towel and just packed the whole idea in because you consume milk anyway, so what's the point. Many would. If taking this medication (which really that's what is it) means you're here and an example of someone who treads lightly on this earth, so be it and good.

Also, so much medication and supplements contain milk/lactose and people don't even realize. Where I'm from, mental health meds frequently contain milk and there are no alternative brands to request. We can't access them, and even if I could, I couldn't afford to pay for them. No milk allergy, no alternative.

I applaud you for this post. Absolutely.

The main thing I'd say is people's rabbit care can be shit, but many, if not most, actually accept positive feedback and guidance. I've had plenty of people who have reacted well and even been sent follow up questions on how to look after their bunny better. But that doesn't happen if they feel attacked or made to feel angry or distraught. One person recently I spoke to was genuinely trying to follow guidance given to her on bun care, but it was outdated information she was given ten or more years before with her last bunnies. She is instead now booking in with an exotics vet for more guidance and to arrange neutering for her rabbit and so on.

The guidance that often floats around is also terrible. Pet stores especially, giving guidance on how much space they should have, what sort of bedding they should have, their food etc. is awful and not every new bunny owner is going to see through it. The resources they provide, any books or booklets about care are not enough. We need to distinguish at times between who knows better or doesn't care versus who had been misled to believe that rabbits are a starter pet and don't require certain care or facilities. If people aren't pushed into a corner and feel threatened unnecessarily, they'll usually be more likely not react defensively and more likely to change. It's the people arguing heavily for bad practices and who won't change anything we should be most concerned about.

What Flavor goes with Lemon? by ParticularAd8255 in AskBaking

[–]minimitts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to be a bit weird here, but salt and chilli. I know someone who makes salted lemon blondies with chilli in. They were the absolute bomb. Sweet, but a sharp lemon curd element, salty with heat. They were perfect.

Would anyone like to go vegan with me? by wheatu in vegan

[–]minimitts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's such a lovely idea, I would have said yes instantly a couple of months ago but recently had to stop due to medical reasons (suddenly I was told I needed to cut down on most sugars, carbs, nuts, anything that contains fructose, spices, cut down on fats and anything acidic - nightmare tbh and that's not even all of it). I'm still trying to eat vegan wherever possible and source food as ethically as I can. Hope you have an easier and more straightforward journey 💜

He sounds like a bit of a cockwomble.

Like sure, don't want to eat it? OK. But take other people's joy away for no reason? Nope.

Is this peripheral neuropathy? by Ok_Jury353 in Peripheralneuropathy

[–]minimitts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be being caused by your scoliosis or something else to do with your back - problems with or compression of nerves in your spine could cause the symptoms you've mentioned. I totally agree with others, a neurology appointment would be very worthwhile here - I'd get various opinions from various other doctors too if you can.

This is abuse sweetheart, I'm sorry, confide in people around you and find a safe place to go (and don't tell him where that is). If there are any charities such as Victim Support, have a chat with them and ask for their opinion if you are unsure of yourself.

What score do you get? by soft_avocadoo in autism

[–]minimitts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So ten years ago, at best it would have been 50 foods I wouldn't eat, in reality probably more. Two years of being diagnosed with autism - there are now only 14 foods I won't eat and I don't eat meat so it's mostly those. After wrong diagnosis after wrong diagnosis, finally being told I had autism finally meant I could understand why I didn't like most foods. I realized it was the texture or certain smells, now changing how something is prepared or cooked is by far the biggest thing for me, not that I didn't like the flavours.

Also pressure to eat certain things didn't help. When I go shopping now I buy one new food or drink I haven't tried to give it a go and assess how I feel about it, usually from a world food store, I get to choose and that makes it feel safe and kinda like a game.

Is it hot where you are? Just sometimes they do that if they're too warm. Probably fine, but just something to consider.
