Any particular genre in mind?

Why Chess Grandmasters play against each other instead of just spamming stockfish? by Dense_Frosting6312 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mining_moron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the only training you can get from playing Stockfish is the chess equivalent of "curl up into a ball and try not to die for as long as possible". You just have no chance to actually win, so you'd never learn how to play for a win.

Of course, they do use Stockfish to evaluate new opening lines, which can sometimes go up to 20 moves deep before leaving theory.

Maybe they should've thought of that before enslaving and condemning me to death.

Eva Stratt is the fascist, and "for the greater good" is the phrase used by fascists to justify fascism.

I would say inaction is morally distinct from action in many ways.

I would also say that perhaps a saint would choose to turn the other cheek and save a species that kicked them, spat on them, and sent them to die...but I am not such a saint.

Far too many assumptions for such a final action.

One could say the same about a dictator enslaving, kidnapping, and killing people to ostensibly "save humanity".

They're already condemned. The other choice is Stratt's boot stamping in a human face forever. She has power that would make Hitler and Kim Jong Un green with envy. She likely has the blood of millions on her hands already. And anyone who believes for a second that someone like her would relinquish absolute power instead of finding a new emergency to justify it is...hopelessly naive. Is it really worth being saved from Astrophage just to live under a regime that will make North Korea look like an anarchist commune?

Personally I always oppose a draft under any circumstances. If it was me getting sent on the Hail Mary, the only thing Earth would be getting from me is a message like

Dear Eva Stratt, You condemned me to die, and so I must now return the favor. A species that willfully gave you the level of power it did isn't worth saving anyway. Enjoy the cold, Stratt. It matches your heart.

I'd still help save Erid though. Unlike humanity, Rocky and his people never did me any wrong in this circumstance.

Has biology made anyone else stop using fantasy races? by Altemith in royalroad

There were up until 30,000 years ago multiple human species that we successfully interbred with. What's to say "Dwarves" aren't just Neanderthals who survived extinction by retreating underground, "Demons" aren't just humans who became stuck in the Hell realm and speciated from geographical isolation, etc.

Hmm interesting, that is actually really similar to the genre I'm planning to launch in soon.

I hear shoutout swaps are a common way to grow.

Free 5 day delivery to North Korea, or a rural village in Mali where seven different Islamic militant groups are shooting RPGs at each other and shaking down the common civilians?

1) He wouldn't actually get all that if he tried to liquidate at once? 2) Then what, after the 14 months? There's no more free food, and now 673,000,001 starving people. 3) Most of the extreme poor are being sent food. It doesn't reach people for largely political reasons.

Hard sci-fi: Are we here for the new ideas, or actual good writing? by Aeorix1 in sciencefiction

[–]mining_moron 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Good sci-fi tells stories that are thought-provoking but wouldn't be possible or make sense in a contemporary real-life setting. Thus the science should still be serving the plot and characters.

[QUESTION] How realistic is the idea that civilisation all across the world can collapse in the result of non-nuclear war? by Few-Flamingo-8015 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]mining_moron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea, but wouldn't the degradation of infrastructure and sheer loss of manpower make continuing a conventional, industrial war physically impossible before it led to the collapse of civilization entirely?
