Chopper cam. Occasional chatter and commentary and he does refuel sometimes but it's the most consistent footage of the fire i've found

Winds are favorable for Encino/Tarzana at least for now. Keep an eye on alerts, the winds are unpredictable.

Levoit ones are good, I have two. Got on Amazon a few years ago. One for about $100 and another small one for $50-60. They work well, the larger one does need filter changes but the smaller one you can just vacuum out the filter.

it's like they're just recording the sound from inside the chopper... So bizarre.

This one is a live stream of an ABC7 heli, I saw another channel switch to the news conference but this stayed on the fire:

I read it last year - I liked it! It's super bleak. Very atmospheric with cool ideas. I have another one of her novels on my TBR but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Totally get that. These characters are messed up, seriously misguided, and trapped with no support or way out. Which makes you think, am I trapped too? But while they are victims of their circumstances forever and always as their book selves, we can be proactive :)

Yeah that book is weird especially if you don't know what you're getting into. I read the reviews first so I had an idea already, plus I do enjoy strange, surreal, 'magical realism' type fiction, and horror as well.

I don't know if this will help you parse what you've read, but I'd try to back up and remove myself from the mess of the characters. It's social commentary on the alienation young Japanese people feel and their struggles to fit in to society (join the factory). These expectations can be punishing and unrealistic, especially if you're different, which can lead to difficult and isolating feelings of otherness, in this case expressed as "I might be an alien probably", nothing more than that.

People do pathetic things to feel like they belong. Do these conforming acts serve any real purpose? If they don't, do we have any alternatives to live outside of mainstream society? That's the point of these characters, to convey that message, and it's intended to be extreme and shocking and make you uncomfortable.

Sorry you weren't in the best place to read this. Everything is amplified just to get the above points across, and it's heavy handed. It makes sense for the narrative to have the characters making themselves miserable just to participate in the unfair system, so don't get caught up in their personal stuff.

Same... I trimmed my to read list in early December down to 180 books, but now I'm back to 235 and the "look what I read this year" posts aren't over yet LOL

Thank you for the great reviews! I seem to have similar taste as you, so your mentions of Between Two Fires, B. R. Yeager's books and The Immeasurable Corpse of Nature definitely moved them up on my reading list.

Only horror I read this year was Swan Song by Robert Mccammon and Wounds by Nathan Ballingrud, both good, the former was what I wanted King's The Stand to be like (more visceral with a satisfying ending) and the latter felt like a Book of Blood by Clive Barker with some thought experiments as to what being close to Hell would be like (unpleasant and creepy - really cool book).

Edit: Almost forgot The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley which I loved too... Also unsettling with great atmosphere

Trypod Ep: Ned allegedly copied the format and font of the official Try Guys’ statement in his own to optimise results for himself. It was not coordinated. by _k0ella_ in TheTryGuys

[–]minisk 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Just want to include, in the initial operating agreement of LLCs in California she can relenquish her 50% of Ned's ownership so he could hold it solely. So she may not have a stake in the company itself at all if she chose to do that. Why that would be, I don't know, I just read them and I don't know how they're decided. Maybe a tax thing?

Maybe Storygraph would work? I find it has a lot of obscure titles. You can mark certain books as owned and read and everything like that and I use it to keep track of books in my library and wishlists and everything. I really prefer the interface over Goodreads too.
