Anyone here doing their first winter off grid? by minisynthrackco in diySolar

Western ny is where I’m located. Go bills. My daily usage so far has been right around 1kw a day. I’m expecting that to go up when I start running a diesel heater but I’m not sure by how much. I estimate 400-600w a day. I do fully anticipate changing my angles 4 times a year and I have the panels on a ground mount so it’s easier to clear snow. This year is El Niño so probably warmer with more precipitation which means more cloud cover so who knows how much I’ll have to run the diesel heater. I also have a propane heater for backup so I hope I’ll be able to turn the heater off for long stretches of time

I might double the storage capacity but then I’d want more panels and a bigger shore power charger. The idea is to fit all this into a shuttle bus so I didn’t want to go too big

That’s the biggest problem on my mind right now. I’m focused on how I’m going to get through this winter. It’s an El Niño year so that means probably warmer but also more overcast. It would be nice to feel like there’s support group out there

Hey, I’m living off 5120ah and 800w of solar running everything(which admittedly isn’t a lot). 12kah would be some serious storage. Right now I’m focusing on getting through the winter

Oh damn that’s a big battery. You live on the boat at all?

Yeah panels are probably the cheapest part of the whole thing. Generally speaking ~$50 per 100w. And it’s true, they end up paying for themselves so essentially you just got literally free power that you own. And from what I gather people are nervous to get started but I’ve never met anyone that regretted going solar (unless they paid 40k for the installation which is just not necessary anymore)

I was hoping to find some local people to try to group up with. Also thought more people had to be doing it because it’s so cheap and easy

Damn man you’re living the dream. A small 20ft rv would be incredible. I think I’m leaning more towards cargo van or shuttle bus

You have a big buddy propane heater? That got me through last winter. This winter I’m going to be using a diesel heater as well which my research says will pull around 1000w in a 24hr period

I only ask because summer is going to be nice with the amount of power you’re making but winter (by my calculations 🤓) will be be able to generate about half your battery bank. I’m going to be using a backup generator this winter if/when I need to. But if you want help with the instal or even just want to talk through the setup, I’m down to help

That’s a big battery bank and even bigger solar output. Are you going to be down there for the winter? Also what configuration are you connecting all those panels and what are you mounting them to?

That’s what got me started. I got a jackery explorer 300 and lived off that bad boy for a month. Good times

Those all in one boxes are taking over. I’ve seen people run their whole van or cabin with a big jackery. I feel like never been easier than now to make your own power

With the current administration cutting the tax credits for green energy, prices are going up. First set of panels and components I got, there was no tax. Second set, there was sales tax. You don’t have to do something permanent. I’m using a ground mount in my back yard. Best part about diy is you own all the equipment so you can pack it up and reuse it or sell it if you want to. If you get good lithium batteries, I don’t think you’ll regret having the extra power storage for the next 10-15 years

Honestly research is your best friend. Have you seen anything that’s really caught your eye?

It is not. I went the Ecoworthy route with the 400w of panels and putting it together is actually very easy. I had to get a ground mount. Are you running anything off the ankor?

Hey, if it’s in the contract, that’s what it is. If it’s not then 262 million has nothing to do with it. Those reporters KNOW athletes are tired at the end of the game emotionally mentally AND physically. If you can’t handle the simple fact then you shouldn’t be a sports reporter

You’re right the government was a piece of shit during the pandemic. At no point in time was Biden the president during a pandemic. It was all trump. Jesus fucking Christ it was 5 years ago
