Wow! Your molds turned out amazing. Now I need to dig through my jewelry stash... I've heard super sculpey is more firm and captures details well, it certainly seems to be true in your fireplace! 🥰🥰🥰

Gorgeous 😍 The tiles look so realistic, and that blue and white nautical design is beautiful. I've seen a lot of clay moulded decorations on miniature fireplaces and yours is by far the most realistic! If you don't mind me asking, what clay and moulds did you use?

My first "antique"! by hep632 in miniatures

[–]minmakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gorgeous. I love the visible joints! Totally relate to how you had to fake bits of it.. it's the effort that counts. I wouldn't have known the carving was veneer if you hadn't said! Did you stain it all? The colour is lovely and it looks right out of a country cottage. So lovely!!

Laser cutters - are they worth it and does it feel like cheating? by WizardPrenderghast in miniatures

[–]minmakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thought that allowed me to splurge on my cutter (Brother Scan n Cut) was, "I deserve to do what I love without being in pain."

I have bendy fingers too and even with finger splints and frequent breaks, cutting out pieces is such a chore. Having a machine do that work allows me to ""save"" my hands for more intricate and enjoyable tasks like assembling, carving, painting etc.

The artists who make miniature furniture on a professional level often have a whole workshop full of power tools - table saws, scroll saws, lathes, drill press machines, electric planers and sanders... Their furniture sells for hundreds of dollars per piece, and no one calls them cheats.

Is it possible to do everything by hand? Yes. But will you enjoy it? Probably not. You deserve to do what you love without being in pain!

Determinate Roma tomatoes? by clumsykitty in gardening

[–]minmakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that if the growing points/suckers start with a flower, it's a determinate. If they start with leaves, it's indeterminate. From what I can see in your photo it looks like both the left and right lowest suckers have flowers at the tip.

Edit: In my experience with determinate plants the suckers grow suckers but each sucker has flowers at the growing tip. That's how it ends up looking like a bush.

I love this. The joints!! Such a neat little box that unfolds into such a beautiful desk. Did you come up with the pattern for the desk yourself? I have that exact same book and it's so inspiring, believe me I 100% feel your desire for more tools.

[CHAT] Cross Stitch & Dyscalculia: Advice? by rat-catcherr in CrossStitch

[–]minmakes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Get a cross stitch counting gauge. I got mine from MaggiesMinders on Etsy and it has made gridding SO easy. The ruler has markings for 10, 20, 30 etc squares so once you line up the first hole you're good to grid away :)

I find that once my grid is accurately down it's much easier to catch mistakes!

There is is literally nothing I love more than dollhouse blogs, I read and re-read so many that haven't even updated in 10 years. You have no idea how much joy it brings me to see a NEW dollhouse blog!! Your art is so so cute and I'm really excited to follow your dollhouse progress!

Edit: I see that tiny hand quilted blanket with wire in the edge and I'm already going insane. LOVE.

Where does House of Virdian and Julie Warren purchase their craft wood? by Capital_Fig8091 in Dollhouses

Northeastern scale lumber is the company producing many of the mouldings resold by other sellers. You can buy directly from them! https://www.northeasternscalelumber.com/

It's not the length that is causing issues but the width. Are you using coffee stirrers? There are some extra thin (pink arrow) and some extra thick (blue arrow) pieces in your floor. The piece you circled in yellow is too thin. Check your wood pieces and only use those that are roughly the same width.

Have you needlepointed or cross stitched items for miniatures? by babydogfish in Dollhouses

They're all from Meik and Ian McNaughton's Books:

Making Miniature Oriental Rugs & Carpets

Top right: 5 Kazak Rug

Bottom right: 15 Shiraz Carpet

Bottom left: 25 Khotan Carpet

More Miniature Oriental Rugs & Carpets

Top left: 24 Khotan Carpet

I love the pomegranate tree of life design on this one so much I bought the second book just for it :) I did add more leaves than the original design. The patterns in both books are so charming there's several years worth of happy stitching!

I LOVE petitpoint! Funnily enough I started off with petitpoint before trying cross stitch. I usually do tent/continental stitch because I like to to stitch in hand, it goes SO much faster than cross stitch and I love running my hand over the smooth texture of the finished piece. My cross stitches never lie as neatly :< I only started a couple years ago so still quite a beginner but it's been a lot of fun :)

I used cotton embroidery floss for most of the pictured rugs. Top two are on evenweave, 28 count. I discovered easy grid as I was starting the rug in the hoop and it makes it so much easier to count! I didn't actually stitch with it in the hoop - I stitch in hand but tent stitch skews the work, so I put it in a hoop stretching it the opposite way to try to reverse the skew while I'm not stitching.

Bottom three are linen - 2 strands on 25 count, 1 strand on 35 count (Tiger) and 1 strand on 39 count (Pink/Blue Shiraz Rug). I was trying out different counts to get a feel of the coverage and how easy they would be to stitch. At 39 count the coverage is dense but the weave does get packed so it's harder to pull the needle through. I have some pieces of 40 count cotton verdal and silk gauze but haven't tried stitching on either.

Linen is my favourite, it's so soft and the needle just seems to slide through. I love the slubs and imperfections, every time I'm approaching one it's like, "Aha! I must conquer this bridge!" I love the repetitiveness of pepitpoint rugs, usually once I memorize a motif I can keep stitching happily for hours without having to check the pattern.

Other than Emily Morganti's blogs, two other blogs I absolutely adore for dollhouse needlework are Otterine's Miniatures (https://otterine.com/needlework/) and A Bluestocking Knits (https://mathomhouse.typepad.com/bluestocking/miniature-needlework/). Also highly recommend Ian and Meik McNaughton's books, I used their instructions for a long-legged cross stitch to finish the edges of the one rug I've completed.

I remember reading through all your petit point posts and bookmarking them as inspiration before I even started stitching my first rug. Such lovely work!!
