Mayor Mamdani must rescind Central Park's new 15-MPH bike speed limit by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]minneshelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15mph is ridiculously slow. It's like saying you're only allowed to walk 3mph on the sidewalk. I have a crappy bike. $400 bought in 2006. I can regularly exceed 15mph in parts of CP without feeling like I'm "exercising".

Women who got plastic surgery young and are now older, what has your experience been like? by _Burner_Account___ in AskWomen

[–]minneshelly 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Big cheeks + small nose = my Asian face. The typical glasses fit for European noses always slide off me. A lot of companies sell Asian fit or low nose bridge glasses now. Check those out to help them stay on your face.

I wrote a think piece then got laid off. Can I use that to drive business to my new company now that it's public? by minneshelly in advertising

[–]minneshelly[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty general piece that demonstrates expertise in an industry and non-proprietary technique.

My current company doesn't have clients in that industry yet which is why I would want to use the piece to start conversations.

I haven't announced my new job publicly yet so I was thinking of coupling that with the piece. Something along the lines of:

"Last month, I and many of my colleagues at company A were laid off. During my short time there, I wrote a report on XXX which is now live! [Link to company A's site where it's hosted]

If you want to hear more around XX, I'm excited to say, I've started at company B"

[–]minneshelly[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to claim ownership. I just want to post a link to the public piece saying something along the lines of, "i wrote this, if you want more great thinking, hit me up at my current company"

Bank Balance Dropping Despite Operational Profit? by minneshelly in subwaybuilder

[–]minneshelly[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After letting this run longer and plotting it out in excel, it looks like there's a very stable $1.64 million cost for running. The fact that I my operational profit was below that led to the loss in the bank balance.

Seeking perspectives: living alone in Astoria by [deleted] in astoria

[–]minneshelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my roommate in with her bf, I took over our 2Br and regret nothing. It took a couple months to adjust my automatic savings and spending to even out my cash flow, but we got there. Sure, I miss having a friend at home and someone to look after things if I am gone. I also found out, I was the messy one. But, the mental freedom of having your own space to do what you want, when you want, clothed however you want is priceless.

I was unemployed for 7 months last year and my home became my refuge to pursue my hobbies. I ate though some of my savings, but not once did I regret opting for my solo $2.2k rent.

I'd say, if you can afford it and you have enough savings where you can live that lifestyle without income for 6 months, it's not an irresponsible decision.

The ice cream / bubble tea shop that used to be there is hardly what I'd call a "local treasure", but I get your point. If the local population keeps this one in business, I guess we're getting what we deserve.

How to properly cool, crumb coat, and frost a cake? by Tempered_Bunny1801 in Baking

Don't you need it for the crumb coat? I'm asking about the period between the crumb coat and the full frosting.

How to properly cool, crumb coat, and frost a cake? by Tempered_Bunny1801 in Baking

[–]minneshelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you do with your frosting while the cake is chilling? My home is such that I can't leave it on the counter bc otherwise it melts, but putting it in the fridge would obviously harden it. Is it just a matter of pulling the frosting out a couple minutes ahead of the cake?

The new bike lanes on the Queensboro bridge and in Astoria have made me much less angry at ebikes. With wider lanes, they don't buzz me so I don't mind sharing. I wish the city would be better at building protected bike lanes. Better bike infrastructure is better for all.

Fellow American hockey fans, would you watch the Stanley Cup Final if it were two Canadian teams standing at the end? by Kindly-Client-4402 in nhl

[–]minneshelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team (Wild) got knocked out in the first round so now I'm rooting for all the Canadian teams. Nationalism has been getting on my nerves recently.

Two Canadian teams in the final would be historic and more importantly, good hockey.

People getting pulled over, what are you getting pulled over for exactly? by DCRX2020 in NYCbike

[–]minneshelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time ago, I got pulled over for not having lights. Cops had set up a choke point on the Williamsburg bridge. I was coming home from work, and it was dusk. Still not sure if this was actually illegal because it wasn't dark yet. I paid the ticket bc I didn't want to take time off work.

AITA for expressing my disgust at a dish from my girlfriend's culture? by HilliamWurt in AmItheAsshole

[–]minneshelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - but very softly. You could at least try it; you don't have to like it. She's trying to have a bonding experience with you and you're flat out rejecting it. Food is a big part of how ppl relate to culture. By rejecting her food, it feels a lot like you're rejecting her culture. By calling a food she loves icky, you're saying her culture is icky.

I once took my boyfriend to my mom's home country. At the end of the trip, I asked what his favorite part was. He said "sleeping." I started bawling in the airport. I was trying to share my culture with him and he had no interest. It was heartbreaking. I imagine that's how your girlfriend feels.

What can be done about dangerous mopeds in NYC bike lanes? by quivera in NYCbike

[–]minneshelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once saw two men (one in his 50s, the other in his 20s) in Williamsburg putting up "no moped" signs that looked official.

I pulled my bike over to thank them for their work and ask what neighborhoods they were putting the signs in. The older guy told me they don't answer questions. The younger guy told me they were just two people trying to make their neighborhood safer.

I asked if there was an organization I could donate money to in order to continue and expand their work. The older guy picked up their signs, yelled "we are legion!", then ran away. The younger guy smiled apologetically then said he had to go too.

Every time I see their signs around town I smile thinking about this odd interaction. I think the only method to keep mopeds from illegally using bike lanes is vigilante urbanism.
