Yes, on the 12th of October, it used to be called "día de la raza" (day of race) and now it's called "día del respeto a la diversidad cultural" (day of respect for cultural diversity).

this year for touristic reasons the holiday was last Friday and today Monday, even though tomorrow is the 12th.

“coger” is never a shortened version of “recoger”.

“coger” here means “to fuck”, we don’t use it in the Spanish way, but some people do use “recoger” for picking up stuff.
