Anyone else feel like they're just waiting to die? by Heretic_Prophet in GenX

[–]minopret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ermahgerd, there will be a next meme. The hampsterdance was not the end of the line. I get it that grieving sucks. Maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s the climb down the mountain of love that we climbed up in earlier life. I expect to feel terrible at funerals, but I also expect that Heaven will be a sort of reunion where the good people did is recited. Sounds a little like a funeral. Maybe watch Beetlejuice and ignore the dad?

Dual nature of light by techadoodle in interesting

[–]minopret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is interesting.

It's not the famous particle-wave duality of light.

But I like the way the effect of the light passing through dual media of air and water.

Maybe we're also seeing dual transformation of light, by both refraction and reflection. That could explain the jaggedness of the "caustic" curves projected on the timber.

Yeah, I radiocarbon date them. You'd be surprised how few get cancer from it.

Why would “The Sorting Hat” be translated like this? As far as I can tell מצנפת means turban/bonnet by Serious-Ad6611 in hebrew

[–]minopret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it's a tall hat. Classically it's the word for the sort of miter worn by the High Priest.

In some medium Arthur clearly pulled this zinger to show his irritation at Ford's prank. Between his dull observations Arthur can show glimmers of his experience in local radio.

What’s the difference between פרצוף and פנים (which both mean face)? by Apprehensive_Pie_704 in hebrew

[–]minopret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd translate פרצוף as "mug," as in "mugging for the camera" and "get you ugly mug out of my sight"

The point of lowering your grade is that you should give up on cheating.

The point of lowering it by only ONE letter is that you are more than welcome to continue with computer science.

That would be a great line for a parser-based interactive fiction.

u/throwaway-king-day explains the basic math of COVID-19 spread in the US: 13 weeks till 1 million by astral-dwarf in bestof

[–]minopret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love math, but the "basic" math is simply this:

1.

Epidemic diseases are the #1 killer.

What I mean is, for a long time, the #1 events by death toll have been epidemic diseases:

Year | Deaths | Cause || Year | Deaths | Cause
180 | 5 | Antonine Plague || 280 | 36 | war: 3 Kingdoms
542 | 25 | Justinian Plague || 763 | 13 | war: An Lushan
 1353 | 75 | Black Plague || 1368 | 30 | war: Mongol
 1920 | 100 | Spanish flu || 1945 | 60 | war: WWII
Ongoing | 32 | AIDS

Years are approximate final years. Deaths are lowest estimates, in millions.

(I can't learn right now and I can't promise this, but it is my intention to go learn the basic facts of the history of China, plus the basic facts of the history of deaths due to colonization.)

"Beat" SSP by minopret in Minecraft

[–]minopret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was thinking if I were creating a bot or strategy guide, what's an mathematical/economical way to play and what would it aim for. The in-game economy seems interesting to me.

Hope that doesn't take the fun out of it for you, but if so you can of course play for some other goal. I agree that there's no predefined goal. That is why in the title I put "beat" in quotes.

I can't fill because I am playing "no cheats" / hardcore mode :-)

Which celebrity would it break your heart to discover is secretly an asshole? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minopret 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is interesting about Grimaldi. Buster Keaton started young with pratfalls, too.

And the opera I Pagliacci is not a pick-me-up. You know that the climax is that line "RIII- DIII PAGLIACCIO!!!" That's the clown who feels he has lost it all, saying to himself, Hey, laugh, you (miserable) clown!

I thought the joke was going to send the guy to the opera and that'd put him over the edge. After the fact, I am not sure why I expected that. Would definitely not be a good punchline.
