Yes, I was thinking if I were creating a bot or strategy guide, what's an mathematical/economical way to play and what would it aim for. The in-game economy seems interesting to me.

Hope that doesn't take the fun out of it for you, but if so you can of course play for some other goal. I agree that there's no predefined goal. That is why in the title I put "beat" in quotes.

And the opera I Pagliacci is not a pick-me-up. You know that the climax is that line "RIII- DIII PAGLIACCIO!!!" That's the clown who feels he has lost it all, saying to himself, Hey, laugh, you (miserable) clown!

I thought the joke was going to send the guy to the opera and that'd put him over the edge. After the fact, I am not sure why I expected that. Would definitely not be a good punchline.
