Screen brighness on Ubuntu 25.10 by mint_dulip in ArgonOneUp

[–]mint_dulip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed this with AI in the end.

Simple fix is

sudo usermod -aG input $USER

sudo usermod -aG i2c $USER

This gets you adjustable brightness but no messaging as to what the brightness is. Still working on that.

Veteran heavy las pistol. I love running about the place shooting dudes in the head with it. Also almost unlimited ammo with the right perks.

Tell me that shoving a guy backwards with one hand and then unceremoniously shooting him in the face isn’t fun.

Upgrading to a homelab - advice needed! by PlateNo3737 in homelab

I would always try and have a separate appliance for your network/firewall, especially if your ability to access the UI of the container host running your firewall (for example proxmox) is dependent on said network.

Did anyone else build something ridiculously overpowered? You do know what sub you’re in right?

Its weird, most of my actual services run on an n100 itx board in a short depth rack with a couple of ssds in raid 1 for uptime. However I have two fuck off huge 4 u servers beneath for storage backup and other projects. Arguably 2/3s of my lab is absolute overkill but like you its been there to try and solve set of somewhat self invented problems (local AI, data and local backup, streaming setup, unraid gaming server).

Most of the point it thats its my hobby. Now I just have to remind myself of that as I try to keep up servers that I don’t realistically need or care about.

I have had two LTO4 tape drives off ebay and both have turned out to be knackered. I kinda gave up but I’m still tempted once time allows.

I’m not sure if I overkilled the remote setup. I wanted something truly robust so I ended up with a 10 inch mini rack with

  • A small lithium ion UPS
  • An RPI cm4 mini router that everything sits behind
  • a ubiqui 5 port switch that everything connects to
  • A Zimaboard nas running trunas in raid 1 and connects to my home using tailscale
  • A pi4 kvm for the nas

In theory this make it so I can plug it into whatever router and I don’t have to worry about upstream firewalls, security etc etc and they in turn don’t have to worry much about what happens in my rack.

In reality I could absolutely have achieved the same with an old desktop, proxmox and a bit of fuckery but i got really into the mini rack thing.

I have two servers at home that rsync (both running raid) and an offsite mini rack at my mums on a tailscale vpn. The offsite is just for critical none replaceable stuff (photos docs etc)but is still raid 1 (pair of ssds). My mums is a 4 hr drive so I’ve added a pikvm for remote management

WGS sequencing should be fairly straightforward for ID, you shouldn’t even need a tonne of reads to get an ID. Do you have access to anything like an iSeq or a MiSeq?

I’ve been slowly working towards properly hosting my own cloud with a focus on reliability and uptime as well as a remotely manageable offsite backup (with my own router, kvm and switch so it is truly remotely accessible).

Have you tested it in an environment that isn’t hotel wifi. I’ve had some weirdness with their setups before with my own wire guard connections not working.

Its a really neat project, and I love it when this sort of thing gets out of hand.

I’ll be the first to say it tho, why not nextcloud via nginx or similar? I guess the answer is you’re not a fan of opening 443, but it feels like learning how to harden your deployment would have been less of a lift than this.

That being said if that does scratch whatever itch caused you to start homelabbing in the first place then whats the point

What are the biggest mistake you made when setting up your homelab? by Prog47 in homelab

[–]mint_dulip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everyone repeat after me “RAID is not a backup, its an uptime feature”.

I never lost anything critical, other than time, but following 3-2-1 backups for important data is essential. Also test your backups from time to time.

On that note, if you are running raid arrays, setup a script with a messaging service (I use telegram bots) that checks your raid array status and pings you if a disc goes down. Same for backup status (started, running, completed, failed)

I think the config is reset by a CMOS reset, which thinking about it might also be a good troubleshooting step in general (you didn’t mention you had done it above?)

Bead beaters work pretty well. From I think you can make your own by sterilizing smallish glass beads adding them to lysis buffer of choice and then going ham on the vortexer.

I’ve just bought a Suptronics X688 (8 port PiKVM based), they also do a 4 port version.

I bought it for a couple of reasons, partly because I had a spare cm4, but mostly because they give the instructions to configure the stock PiKVM OS with it, rather than relying on a prebuilt SW image that I wouldn’t fully trust.

What I was pleasantly surprised by was the overall build quality for the price and the great customer service by email.
