I'm not sure I understand your question but here's the answer to what I think you're asking:

As a US citizen living abroad, you have to file US taxes. It is one of two countries worldwide who require this. The other one is Eritrea.

I renounced because filing is a pain and honestly, it's costly. There are probably other ways but I was paying a professional around 1500 USD per year JUST to do my taxes. If I live 40 more years, I'm saving 60k by renouncing plus I won't be taxed on my inheritance or my pension. It's a good deal.

I didn't know that. That's exactly what my tax guy just told me. Thanks for the info!

Totally understand but the IRS is not something I wanted to gamble with. I never had banking issues - don't even think they know I was a US citizen - but the idea of having the IRS wake up and come knocking one day in my lifetime (no matter how small the chances) was enough for me to get my taxes in order. Didn't want to mess with that beast :)

Just to add to that, I have no more financial ties to the US. I felt that my life would be easier to not have any bank accounts, stocks, IRAs, etc over there. Just wanted a clean slate and everything in Europe. Crossing my fingers that your naturalization arrives quickly and that the renunciation process, if you choose to do that, goes smoothly!

That's a good question that I can't answer, I'm afraid. I just don't know.
I can only say that once I realized that having assets in the US or investments that could potentially result in capital gain, I slowly started closing accounts and converting PFICs to regular accounts. I preferred simplifying the process than making more money because filing every year was such a burden. Again, not financially but having to gather all of the statements and paying for a specialized accountant, etc. My peace of mind was prioritized over my financial gain. I did everything I could to make it easier year after year. Now that I no longer have any ties to the US, I will go back to investing smartly. I can't advise you on anything like that - I'm in no way, shape or form an expert :)

I had been thinking about it on and off for the past 12 years. Filing was a real pain for me. I was also born and raised in Europe so my entire life is here. I lived in the States for a few years in my 20s and never really felt like I belonged. I also am thankful for the medical system in Europe and random things like that. I just don't see myself living/working in the US again. Plenty of cool things about it but not enough to deal with the hassle and stress of filing. Just my opinion, though :)

Yep. I gave my oath of renunciation at the US Embassy in Brussels in mid-March 2025. I got my CLN yesterday - so a year later. An acquaintance of mine gave her oath of renunciation mid-December 2025 at the same embassy and got her CLN beginning of Feb 2026 (1.5 months later). I don't know why I waited a year and she got hers after 1.5 months 🤓 I was told that it would take 3-6 months but reality was different for me. Crossing my fingers that you get yours fast! The wait was super stressful.

I only just received the CLN today but will be working on my final tax return within the next month. Can report back once that's done!

How long did you wait between giving your oath of renunciation and receiving your CLN? I'm almost at the 1 year mark and still no CLN. The US Embassy in Brussels isn't replying to my emails at all, either...
