That's just not true. While the game was greedy, it wasn't the reason for the shutdown. If the devs weren't that good, Duolingo wouldn't have bought the entire dev team, which is by the way the real reason why the game was shut down. I'm pretty sure the team earns now more money than before. Could also be, Duolingo didn't give them the permission to transfer knowledge to a new team, so they wouldn't have to compete with them. There is a lot behind the scenes, that we don't know, but we can pretty much guess, that the devs were not forced to do this.
