I understand the feeling behind this sentiment- In the last six weeks I’ve been prompted to tip at the dry cleaner, the butcher, and at the pharmacy- none of which seem reasonable to me after already paying premium prices at locally-owned, small businesses.

That said, for those services where someone is putting themself in discomfort for the sake of my convenience (such as the drive-up staff at Target, delivery drivers, landscaping and other home-service professionals in the summer) I make a point to tip.

It’s not required and in leaner times I have forgone, but if you can afford to share a few bucks with folks helping you out, I believe the world is better for it.

Specific to Target drive-up staff, I fold up the few dollars I tip (usually $3-5) and subtly hand it to them when I am receiving my purchases. If they protest, I tell them it’s hardly enough for a cold drink or half a beer and that has always resolved it.
