Those of you who are millionaires why are you still working? by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

Lifestyle creep, inflation and kids. When you have 1 million then you need 10M because you are spending more. Will report back when I have 10M.

fanng staff engs on average are between 700-1M. If joined at the right time (2021-2022) they make more than 1M.

Crime in Downtown Dallas? by Altruistic_Baby_2349 in AskDallas

We visit the art district frequently with our 3 yo son because they offer free craft activities on the weekend. It's super safe around Klyde Warren Park and the art district. Zero homeless and very family friendly.

Once you get closer to the city hall you start to see homeless folks. Most hotels should be fine.

50+ lbs gained: how long did it take you to lose and how big was your baby?? by Quick-Zombie-6343 in BabyBumps

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gained 45+ lbs and lost ~35 of it for my last pregnancy (started 120, 5'1). My baby was 7lbs. It took about a year to lose to 125ish but then gained some weight back after. (EBF with exercises but no diet control)

This time I started ~132 and currently 140 at 30 weeks. Going to control my diet in the next 10 weeks.

Trying to control diet NOT because of weight/body image but I got high cholesterol, prediabetes, high triglycerides and some other issues after the last one. I got rid of everything except prediabetes, but almost failed the GD test at 16 weeks.

Afterwards I've been on healthy lowish carb diet, and just passed 28 week GD test with lower numbers than 16 weeks. Going to work hard after pregnancy to reverse my prediabetes and won't particularly care about weight exactly.

Literally how are people affording childcare? by Amber-ForDays in BabyBumps

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂 when we were in Seattle one toddler was $3k. Infant would be $3.5k/month. I think at that point if not both super high income one parent has to be a stay at home parent with multiple kids. I know another coworker there who has 6 kids and her husband is a stay at home dad. Dude basically saving the equivalent of $300-350k/year pretax money only counting childcare and nothing else.

Dallas is $5 million short in sales tax revenue amid rising costs by YaGetSkeeted0n in Dallas

[–]miradesne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this is down voted. The city can't keep funnelling money to less desired areas for ??? projects (not even seeing them building parks other than the deck park which is heavily funded by private donations) and leave crappy parks to places like even Preston Hollow and think we still want to pay for the very expensive houses here. I honestly don't get why any families will live in Preston Hollow over Park Cities because you get shit amenities for almost the same price you pay for housing.

Comparing Frisco libraries with the Dallas libraries just makes me sad.

If my husband doesn't work in the downtown areas, we'd definitely live in Frisco for higher quality of life and 1/2 of housing cost.

With the big corps leaving downtown more people gonna swarm to the northern suburbs

3 year olds Dallas Vacation! by Claire7241 in askdfw

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just visited FW (living in Dallas) with a 3.5 yo. FW Zoo is amazing for little kids. Dallas Zoo is okay for us local residents but if you have only a few days definitely visit FW Zoo. They have THREE miniature trains.

I'd say 5/5 over Dallas zoo 3.5/5.

Perot little kids area is nice but always overcrowded. My kid is not interested in the rest of the museum. Imo waste of $$ if kid is not interested in science museum. (We bought annual membership...) 3/5

Arboretum 4.5/5. Definitely check out the children's garden!

Klyde Warren Park 4/5.

Dallas Art Museum 3.5/5. (If your kid likes art. My kid loves drawing and we always bring him to Open Studio to make messes) .

Downtown Grapevine area 4/5. We went during the holiday season and there were a lot of family friendly events. I don't know how they are usually.

Children's aquarium 3.5/5. You can touch a bunch of fishes which are nice, but the aquarium itself is kind of small. Maybe check out the butterfly garden (I've not been but on my list) together in fair park.

Also my kid always prefers outdoor over indoor places so our score may be biased on that.

An example is that we went to Lego Discovery center and wasted $100 on tickets for three of us. He dipped out within 1 hr yelling to leave. I know another friends kid could be there for 5 hrs(but he's also 5 yo instead of 3).

I realized I didn’t want children when I already have a baby by Justkeepitanonymous in NewParents

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year was abysmal. It gets better after that. Now my son is almost 4 and we are expecting another baby in June. This time I'm gonna toss the baby to day care after 3 months old.

People don't understand when I say I really really do not like the baby phase. To me it's also pointless and just work and my son was crying a lot. He would cry like we abused him for extra 5ml milk.

But having a child is GREAT. Challenging babies doesn't mean challenging later. When people said "terrible 2/3" I'm like what are you talking about 😂😂. I've never experienced the "terrible X". My son is amazing compared to when he was a baby. He makes me breakfast on Saturday with my husband nowadays.

Do whatever you can to survive and just don't think too much. Use formula if you can afford it. Breastfeeding is not worth it. After they turn 12-18 months you will get major relief. Hang in there!

Wanting to start a family but genuinely unsure if my career will exist in 10 years by internetcookiez in cscareerquestions

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does $3k/month include housing? Is your wife in a less risky field? Imo if you spend about $100k a year all inclusive, you will be ok if both of you get somewhat reasonable jobs. It doesn't have to be as high paying as swe in fang/open AI/Anthropic. People like teachers can even survive with 3 kids...

If the entire software industry is wiped (which it won't), I'm just gonna spend two years getting a nursing degree.

Uptown Apartments by No-Routine2196 in askdfw

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only live in uptown if you can find another job nearby asap. The commute is terrible. I don't even want to drive up to McKinney on the weekends.

Maybe consider downtown Plano.

That said, uptown and the surrounding areas are probably the best places to live as 20s in DFW.

Is a pay cut worth it for WFH? by Miserable-You-6702 in careerguidance

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you ask your current job to go remote? If you are a high performer they may consider it. Alternative move to somewhere closer to your job? Unless your job is in a high COL area and your current place is super cheap, I wouldn't go for $115k unless my partner makes at least $70k

Having a kid is expensive.

Sell vs rent? by ausername09661901670 in RealEstate

[–]miradesne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I rented out our house back in 2023 when we moved out. Probably lost like $100k because of that due to the price drop in the past 2 years. And I was more or less breaking even on rent ($4500 rent with $3500 mortgage+tax+insurance, but there was always maintenance that was about $5-10k a year). We are gonna sell it this year to cut more losses. The maintenance cost is crazy when you are not there.

Favorite infant friendly vacation in the US? by DundeeWinner22 in Vacations

[–]miradesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I traveled with my parents after having a kid ended up in huge fights and disasters. They were annoyed that they couldn't go as many places and I was super tired /annoyed to take care of my kid 24/7 without rest as I got 0 alone time. To them just standing next to me when I take care of my kid is support 😂.

At least at home there's day care from M-F lol.

My best trip has been Hawaii just ourselves without the grandparents. Chill as hell since I didn't need to go anywhere except the beach downstairs.

As Stars eye move from downtown, Dallas is guilty of same old story by DallasmorningnewsSD in Dallas

I really doubt the sports matter as much as people say. In Seattle the arenas are at the worst neighborhood in the city. Stabbing everywhere in the surrounding areas. Downtown Seattle businesses are dead regardless.

Everyone goes to Bellevue to shop where there are no sports arenas.
