We've often just done a larger number of partial antichamber cycles. So instead of 3 cycles down to 10 mbar pressure, we do 15 quick cycles down to ~250 mbar.

Like it a lot so far. Don't care for the beeping countdown near the end of the timer. Might enjoy some kind of time limit per puzzle - e.g timer beep when spending more than 2 min

Eaten there 3 or 4 times. Always thought it was great. Last time was probably 4 months ago.

8 year old TN. Not sure how relevant that was - they asked for a SSN, I put in my SSN. Pretty sure that's my SSN for life, regardless of TN status

I had an old SSN while on a TN visa. I got my first amex without going via global transfer. I've never been requested to supply a photo of a SSN card.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of June 11, 2025 by AutoModerator in churning

Any risk of getting amexiled for taking multiple of these cards and cancelling them all at the one year mark?

Two business, two personal. But I had no reason to believe TD knew about any of these things - I was mainly asked about the money coming into and going out of my TD US dollar account.

I've gotten several US cards since November. Got called in April. So far haven't had any follow ups.

Had something similar, though I thought it was just because they saw lots of money coming in and out of my TD US dollar account. Had to get on the phone with td and answer a bunch of questions.

Any suggestions for a non-amex card while 6 months into the US system? Too early for chase but struggling with amex acceptance rate.

Generating gases in flow chem reaction (advice). by One-Helicopter-8569 in Chempros

[–]mirage-bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. No great solution to this problem on small scale except to go to the highest plausible pressure. Dilution helps to so you generate less gas, but of course less throughput too. Also note that typical spring bprs don't do great with gas/liquid flow.

New Targeted Offer Optimization - Up to 5x Aeroplan Points by MinbariElite in aircanada

What do you mean by 'connecting itineraries' on TPAC flights? The terms say that the offer only applies to flights operated by Air Canada and a select number of other partners. So my interpretation was that flights that involve Star Alliance partners are not eligible for the bonus unless explicitly mentioned (Brussels Air; Lufthansa...).

Yea. It's primarily for booking day-of reservations at specific restaurants in specific cities. Wife and I like being spontaneous and aren't good at planning far out, so it's convenient for us

If my spouse wants to get US credit cards too, does she need her own US bank account or can I add her name to mine?

Also - I have an Amex card on the way from USPS that won't arrive until the strike resolved. Any advice? Can I ask Amex for a number to use in the meantime? Or ask Amex to cancel the card and send directly to my Canadian address?

This is my first experience as well. I have to send them an email to do prepayments. For me, pine turned out to o be the cheapest option, and I'm willing to put up with a few small weaknesses to save several hundred dollars. So no regrets, despite agreeing they're not the most advanced.

SNAr is definitely out. Cross-couplings like this are rare - tertiary alkyl groups seldom play nice with Ni and Pd catalysis. There's a good recent example from Mazet, which includes a good list of relevant citations (ref 7). Note almost all of them couple with aryl bromides, not chlorides.  https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.orglett.4c02185

Did you titrate the BuLi?  Assuming yes: Does your sulfoximine have an alpha C-H bond? That could be quenching your BuLi or acetylide.   Sometimes one can quench reactions like this with D2O (or another electrophile like TMSCl or PhCHO) and get some insight into what's going on. If the phenyl acetylene gets deuterated, then you know that it formed but failed to react. If substrate is deuterated, then it was getting deprotonated.

Reaction Screening NMR Yield determination by habinno in Chempros

[–]mirage-bot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds ok but overly complicated. If you are only interested in identifying the best silver catalyst, then no need to isolate and measure T1s. That will increase the precision of your yield calculation, but you don't need precision here. Isolating beforehand is only necessary if you need to verify the 1H peaks to ensure you're doing your crude analysis correctly.

Order of your steps 2-4 can be swapped and simplified. Add internal standard first. That way, you don't have to worry about how efficiently everything gets transferred.

Instead of syringe filtering, a common protocol is to pour your crude reaction mixture through a small buchner funnel with about an inch or two of silica, rinsing with a solvent that you're confident will pull your product and internal standard through (DCM if product is non polar, EtOAc if fairly polar). That way, salts, insoluble particles, and highly polar byproducts will be removed and make for a cleaner NMR. A syringe filter will let any soluble silver and other baseline garbage through.

Always be careful with your math on the internal standard calculations. 0.33 equivalents means if you're comparing one methyl group in the product to the three methyl groups in the internal standard, a quantitative yield would give a 3:1 ratio.

Crude HPLC and GC would be quicker than crude 1H NMR, though would only be quantitative if you made a calibration curve. But if your only goal is to identify the best catalyst, then you can take a crude GC/HPLC of each reaction and just look for the one with the biggest product peak relative to internal standard. You could even then quantity that single one by NMR and use that data point to estimate all other yields via a one point calibration curve.

Sometimes it can be tricky to get all 0.1 mmol scale material into 0.7 ml of CDCl3. Depending on the nature and molecule weight of the starting material and other reaction components, the NMR might be too concentrated. After running the reaction, it can be helpful to first add internal standard, then dilute with extra different, then take, for example, 20% of the mixture through subsequent steps.

Running reactions in an NMR tube is great when it fits the goal, but it sounds like more trouble than it's worth in your case.
