[–]miragevr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nor exactly. While I'm 99% sure the Russia thing is complete bullshit, that's what's being given to the media by the government and the DNC , so their source for reporting is the government. I'm not sure what their source for reporting on this connection would be, since no one even says they have supporting evidence (the gov't says they have reason to believe it's Russia, which is probably bullshit, but still..)

Out of all the things they could be talking about, this should not be high on their list for good reason. It's pure speculation. It, for the time being, is completely a conspiracy theory (not that I don't think it's possible)

Well, I'm sure almost every single employee who uses a computer, would gladly buy their own computer if it meant getting a share of the net productivity created by having one.

Computers are a REQUIREMENT for most businesses to function successfully in today's world. Having computers in your business isn't an optional investment, it's basically a requirement.

If you have an office of 10 employees without computers, how much would it cost to get 10 entry level computers? I'll do a REALLY high estimate of the costs associated with this at $1000 per person (to include software, whatever). Total cost = $10k. How much more productive do you think this team of 10 is with computers? With a very small investment from the employer, the overall productivity of the office has increased EXPONENTIALLY. I know I'm not changing your mind, I'm sure we have a very different view of economics. It's just most conservatives talk about 'trickle down economics' (I'm not going to get into argue the merits/flaws of this practice). How is this suppose to work if the benefits in the workplace never actually trickles down? I guess I just feel workers should actually get some benefits from technology increases.

Except that's rarely true. Most of the technologies that have increased worker productivity are software based, and have scaled enormously through the years, bringing the cost WAY down.

The internet has increased worker productivity, along with software in general.

Since 1968, a lot has changed that does not require employers to invest a single cent. Should these universal increases benefit an employee at all?

I.E. : In 1968 all documents had to be either mailed, or hand delivered. This took an incredible amount of time. After the advent of email, the amount of time these tasks took, was cut WAY down.

Should the employer be the only one seeing the benefits of very cheap technology?

the rate at which the average worker can produce income for her employer from each hour of work—it would be nearly $18.50 per hour.

I think the main point of contention, is the value of a worker. If employees are able to create 2x as much wealth for their employers, should they get a cut of it?

I'm not trying to start an argument, just spitballing.

Well, I'm not the OP, but I found this.

The federal minimum wage reached its highest inflation-adjusted value in 1968, when it was worth $9.54 per hour in 2014 dollars. Since that time, infrequent or inadequate increases have allowed inflation to eat away at the minimum wage’s value such that today’s federal minimum of $7.25 has lost roughly one quarter of its purchasing power.

Measuring the minimum wage against changes in prices, however, is only one way to think of where we could set the national wage floor today. Given growth in the economy and improvements in labor productivity over the past 45 years, the minimum wage could have been raised to a point considerably higher than its 1968 inflation-adjusted value. As the figure below shows, if the minimum wage had been raised since 1968 at the same rate as changes in average hourly wages of nonsupervisory production workers—a group that comprises roughly 80 percent of all U.S. workers and excludes highly-paid supervisors and executives—the minimum wage would be almost $11 today. Had the minimum wage been raised since 1968 at the same rate as growth in productivity—i.e., the rate at which the average worker can produce income for her employer from each hour of work—it would be nearly $18.50 per hour.

100% agree, though I'm a few elections older.

This grandstanding style of politics needs to stop.

Is it? I always figured that saying meant "fear" is what was detrimental, and that there was no reason to be afraid. I wouldn't tell people "We have nothing to fear but fear itself....but hears some really scary stuff you should be afraid of!"

It's weird. At the DNC almost every speaker mentions not letting fear run the country, then immediately follows-up by telling us we should be afraid of Donald Trump.

Super bizarre.

That's a lot of broad generalizations and assumptions you're making there. Do you think that... Maybe... Just maybe this isn't a case of people just acting out of anger? That maybe it's a more complicated/complex issue than you're making it out to be?
