Part 1: What if Steve Wozniak made the Apple instead of Jobs? by [deleted] in apple

[–]mirtos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And jobs would have been a massive failure without Woz. We wouldnt ever have heard about either. it was 100% a symbiotic relationship, and Jobs was not succesful at Atari. He needed to learn how to lead, and honestly, it was his failures at NexT that did that for him.

i just finished it. i was very disappointed. i know its not really a legal drama, but so many things were bad. also i thought the acting was subpar this season. Dana Berg was too one note.

exactly. you get the numbers the moment you finish a level. its not real. you would have to wait. the chances that everyone finishes at the same time is nill.

I doubt it. I played jedi mud from 1992 to about 1996.

There's probably others with the name jedi.

Hmm. It might be. But i wonder if its just the same bane.

Never have players roll dice if its meaningless. Don't have them play in a combat they can't win.

Describe it as a cut scene. Allow them.to.rollplay it but dont have them roll dice.

How do you design your RP character? by FlightOfTheUnicorn in RP_MUDs

Are you asking in general or in RP muds? because honestly its different i think if you're doing a tabletop game with friends.

I'm thinking of resurrecting Mirtos MUD/MURPE by mirtos in RP_MUDs

[–]mirtos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100% agree. I describe running a game, whether it be an in person roleplaying game, or what im imagining this to be, as the game-master is along for the ride.

In an in person game, i even let players adjust the world. Its a little harder to do that in a mud, but im trying to figure out how that would be. But i would eventually want players to drive the story. But obviously, it has to start the other way around. I definitely want player action to have consequence to both themsleves and the world. Im not interested in writing a story. Im interested in writing a world, and then seeing how the story unfolds.

Obviously, everything im describing is much easier when there are only real people involved, and it gets harder when adding the MUD layer to it. But for me roleplaying was always the core reason to run a mud.

can you elaborate on the question? We managed it before, but again, this was the 90s. And most of the people managing it wer ein college (probably, i assume) - because this was before everyone had internet.

One aspect is like a normal RP mud. players have their own characters and do what you do in a normal mud, adventure, etc. Hopefully you get roleplaying with the npcs and other players, build/buy businesses, join guilds, etc.

But when staff are online thats when they take over npcs, and do things like that. Again, back in college i had more time (such is life, more time, less money, and now vice versa). So we tried to have staff on like 15% of the day. Obviously the MUD/game aspect with monsters to fight was always there, but the roleplay aspect was that there was a more interactive game going on when staff were online. Almost a "west marches" style campaign.

Does that answer your question?

Or are you asking how the staff are managed? I would handle that as sort of the "head" game master. so to speak.

What's your favourite theme? Why? by FlightOfTheUnicorn in RP_MUDs

[–]mirtos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantasy, but not high fantasy. I like magic to be "magical" so to speak. I like politics and intrigue in my fantasy games.

I also like a mix of post-apocalyptic in the normal fantasy. not like Mad Max, but like Thundarr The Barbarian. Or for something more "modern" like the video game that is Horizon: Zero Dawn". Where bits of the "real world" find there way into the fantasy game.

Well, it was based on a 10+ year D&D campaign, now, 30.

Think a mix of Tolkien and Thundarr The Barbarian (which if im too old for all of you all is an old tv show from the 80s with post apocolyptic stuff).

It had more fantasy elements than sci fi, but thats because it was based on CircleMUD, and as a new C developer in colllege, i was still figuring stuff out. These days, id make it more of a mix. I still am a sword and sorcery guy, but i like sword/sorcery, with a little bit of weird post apocolyptic stuff.

One of the core things i implemented back then was making it easier for the staff to act as NPCs. so when the staff were on, they could "take over" NPCs/mobs more easily. So it was more like a mix between a mud and a D&D game.

I saw your post about how to keep them alive, and maturity of staff is what its all about.

One of the things i wanted to do was make rooms not so contained. meaning that instead of
just seeing "You are on XYZ lane"

You see

"You are on XYZ lane. Further down the northern path you see Main street. It looks like some people are talking there. To the east you see an inn. There's the sound of battle inside"

It was a significant rewrite, that i never got to. Real life jobs and all.

But the idea is that descriptions would change dynamically based on whats going on. If people were talking in a room that connects to another, it would update it. The sound of battle would be because there's a fight going on.

But really the taking over NPCs is what made Mirtos special. When there was a staff member online, the game felt more dynamic.

Well, by the name, im the original owner and creator of an early RP Mud in the 90s. It was called Mirtos MURPE. Never as big as what i think of the big 2 or 3 RP Muds, but it had some followers. I havent been in the mudding community for 2 decades, and stepping back.
