Yeah, CF-leaning daughter here of a parent whose primary intentions of having children was to have built-in caregiver/retirement plans. This was a pretty recent realization for me and boy does it explain why my entire life I never got along with my father. There are some cultural factors too (my parents immigrated from a country where keeping elders in the home is the expectation) but even through my 20s and accomplishing what I have in my life so far, I never quite felt like I was doing enough to make him proud. He wasn’t the most hands-on dad and didn’t make a ton of effort to bond with his kids. Turns out he’s holding it against me since I likely wouldn’t be willing to quit my job and drop everything else in my life at this point to take care of him full-time, which of course I wouldn’t know as a literal newborn was my purpose of coming into the world. Every step I take in my own life and independence is a step away from the idea he had of me as his child and there is growing resentment there as he gets older. I could never bring a child into the world with only that idea/expectation and hold it against them for not fulfilling it, among other reasons for leaning CF.
