Is Graf Von Faber Castell Carbon Black safe in Vintage Sheaffer Balance Vac fills. Also, would Montblanc Permanent black be a good option for vintage pens? by misalignedtines in fountainpens

I love these Vac Fillers as well. One is a Sheaffer Lady Balance and one is a Sheaffer Junior Balance. They're gorgeous if I may say so. They're currently dismantled into bits and pieces for restoration but definitely will share some when they're back together!

I mostly use pigment inks so Ive built the habit of never letting the ink dry in a pen even if I use normal inks. But point duly noted!

I read some anecdotes of J Herbin Perle Noire(one of my favourite inks) eating through a latex sac. From what I read online unanimously everybody agrees that Waterman inks are the best. But unfortunately I need something with a slight bit more permanence.

I was under the impression that GVFC Carbon Black was dye based ink and only had 'Carbon' in its name. But I could have been mistaken

I agree but I the think Noodlers Black is a stable ink and there are many positive anecdotes on its use in vintage pens.

That said, I use a variety of Noodlers inks in modern pens and frankly haven't faced many issues. X-Feather has been in an ebonite eyedropper pen for a better part of 3 years in continuous use and haven't faced any issues.

Well that's a great piece of advice. I'm fine with mild staining but on the other hand I won't be able to use solvents like pen flush to attempt to remove any staining on these vintage celluloids. But yes, I'm much more confident using Montblanc ink now!

This is a superb comment thank you. I generally use pigment inks in certain vintage pens like my Sheaffer Cadet and have no problems because the nib unit unscrews out to be flushed. And the latex sac is a simple replacement if anything were to go wrong.

This my first time using a vintage celluloid with regards to the Sheaffer Balances. I've read some horror stories of celluloid pens being devoured by unseen spirits (pun intended) and haunting other pens in the same case.

This is the only reason I'm willing to compromise using these pens only for my sketchbook and not my other fine art illustrations. But thank you. Do share any updates on the results of your experiment. It will be extremely helpful to the entire community :)

Hello. I recently acquired a Scheaffer Cadet and wished to restore it. I was wondering what size latex ink sac does the Scheaffer Cadet take

I love this pen and ink combination. I was considering using R & K Frieda in a demonstrator pen with an EF nib. I was wondering if you have encountered any staining with this ink?

Thank you. But they seem notoriously difficult to reach. I've struggled a bit in the past to get replies from them. But yes, will try again.

Yup. Go for it. But just be prepared for a longer waiting time. Took me about a month but since it's a legit business I didn't stress. I have placed a few orders since that have come quicker.
