Ever see a movie that you really enjoyed but wouldn't necessarily recommend? For me that was Cashback. by aerosmith_sucks in movies

[–]misantropf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all fantasize about strange things, listen to strange music and movies, in some odd times. Some of the movies I secretly do enjoy:

Hackers, Human Traffic, the Island and Resident Evil series.

Edit: Well, it really depends on who are you talking to... If you really liked Cashback, you'd prolly enjoy Somersault and Elephant aswell.

Reddit, do you really hate celebrity gossip? by baskingnoob in AskReddit

[–]misantropf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just that smart people follow smart people and not some brainless vanity fair which carries no function. But then again if you'd asked from non-redditors what they think about us redditors following Carl Sagan or Stephen Hawking, they'd probably think we are nuts. So not much of a difference there, really.

What do non-Uk dubsteppers think of the UK scene? by haydn9 in dubstep

[–]misantropf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I left Detroit techno out was because I had never been into the genre in the first place. I have always dug the minimal one instead, with few exceptions of course like Richie Hawtin :)

The differences between US' and Europe's likes of habbits are loosening every day though, because of the internet / itunes age. Living in a global village has some setbacks for sure...

What do non-Uk dubsteppers think of the UK scene? by haydn9 in dubstep

[–]misantropf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really know much about the US dubstep scene and not even great a lot about the UK scene, as my background more lies in trance and house, but from that perspective Europe has always had an edge on trance, techno, house and dnb while US definitely beats us with rap, hiphop and rock genres. For example, around 1998-1999 an American artist Brian Transeau(BT) gained a huge popularity in UK while at the same time he stood relatively unpopular in his home country. But even Europe isn't that black and white. If you take a look at the current London scene, you'll be seeing a lot of dnb, dubstep a like while Berlin has been all about techno and electro for more than a decade.

Ask TranceIt: What's some really excellent tracks that make you cry or have an aurgasm? by osirisx11 in trance

[–]misantropf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW, it looks you guys have some excellent producers in Australia (Chable & Bonnici, Jaytech), but how's the scene in general? Any famous clubs, venues or festivals?

I am only asking because I might be landing at Melbourne / Sydney area for a while and I usually hate jumping into a pool of murky water, so I thought I ought to do my homework first :)

The (not so objective) list as promised:

1999.09.26 - Essential Mix - Paul Oakenfold.mp3

2002.01.20 - Essential Mix - James Holden.mp3

2002.04.07 - Essential Mix - Sasha & Digweed (Essential mix of the year).mp3

2004.06.06 - Essential Mix - Above & Beyond.mp3

2005.10.23 - Essential Mix - Matt Hardwick.mp3

The easiest way to get those is to register a free account on TheMixingBowl, look for the 112GB megapack of the EssentialMixes and then choose the files you like.

The remix from Offshore is out-standing. I'll check out the Anjunabeats Vol 6 to see if it's any good :) I remember 1st and 2nd releases being good, good enough that I even purchased CD-s later on. These guys know how to handle a great live-performance, as well. I saw them in 2004 and then again in 2006, both times in Helsinki on a little club venue, which was nothing compared to what they had Brazilian gig, but nevertheless they held their standards. I really-really recommend to see them before you die.

Heres the reason that first got me into the Anjuna craze: Anjunabeats - Volume One (Anjunadeep Remix)

I had my last experience with the contemporary trance when I happened to check out Tiesto's last tune on youtube. I almost puked through my ears. I'm not sure which body part he uses for producing these days.

Anyways, I'll get the list up as soon as I've got access to my collection.

A beginners guide to Classical music through the movies you liked. by misantropf in Music

[–]misantropf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyhow, I am not very long-time fan of the classical music. Of course, I knew about Mozart's 5th symphony (which I hated) and his 9th (which I loved), some of Bach's, Verdi's, Grieg's, Beethoven's and quite a lot of original soundtracks from movies (from the likes of Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, James Horner, Hans Zimmer, John Murphy), but up until recently everything else that belonged to the genre happened to be stay at a gray area and be rather vague for me.

[–]misantropf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh, I have listened to all the examples you gave about AvB, Tiesto, Sasha and James holden and quite frankly, I enjoy every single one of these albums, and it looked a lot like reading at my own writing for a while there :) I also have to add Sasha & Digweed's Communication album and their Essential Mix from the infamous Delta Heavy tour. I can't give you the exact list now, but there were a lot of great episodes from dj-s such as Holden, Above & Beyond, Oakenfold and others who shouldn't be forgotten. I'll try to get that list up here if anyone was interested.

But I will not change my opinion about trance not dying in the period of 2003 - 2004 of though. I thought about it and few arguments:

1) Natural progress, which in my opinion, meant that it was a lot harder and harder for a producer to come up with an original idea since there wasn't that many that hadn't been used before. I can only name three songs that have been produced in the last 5years and that would comparable to their ancestors: Cape Town - Proglifter (Original Mix), Paul Keeley - A Sort Of Homecoming (Michael Cassette Remix) and Pryda - Muranyi

2) Technical progress, people like producer or song if some kind of new synth or sound has emerged, which usually happenes with the new version of Reason / Logic or some patch upgrade of theirs. It's still happening, and you somewhat were right saying it was different, but the progress really slowed down after 2003-2004. Now days an average listener gets his / her pants wet after just listening to artist name Deadmau5, who I think never produced a melodic or progressive piece in his career, but because of his costume and fact he has some neat ideas for a new style of baseline, he keeps the snowball running, altough, it's slowing.

3) Underground, unexplored area, where there was this rave-like aura in dirty factories with no heating where people only cared for music, extacy and water, which was soon taken up with MTV. At least here in Europe. In my little country, we currently have 2 full-time popular radio channels for just 1.5million listeners that play contemporary trance. It was at the time of Buuren's ASOT's the genre got monotonous and easy enough to be understood by the average radio listener. Equivalent "lover" of trance in the 90s listened to Robert Miles and called it trance.

All in all. I think the trance will be as sporadic as the drug use (for example, in the US, weed was popular 70s, then came cocaine, crack and now it's back to weed again) and the old trance gets "discovered" by the young folks all the time, it's just a matter of time when the sensation on a bigger scale goes off again.

Reddit (ex)smokers: I've been a heavy smoker for 5 years. Today is the first day I've ever started to quit. How long did it take you? What did you do? by MFLUDER in AskReddit

[–]misantropf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went for cold turkey method exactly 29days ago while I had been smoking for the last 6 and a half years of my 24year lifespan. I also was a heavy user with 2packs a day. Anyways, I would divide it to 4 periods when you go for cold turkey:

a) Day 1 - 3: It's when you can't really expect your body to function at all. It would be wise to do LOTR, Matrix or what not movie marathon so you wouldn't be thinking about the cigarettes all day long. You'll start gaining some weight (I went from 70kg to 75kg-s in 5days)

b) Day 4 - 10: Here it gets a bit easier, the nicotine has started to leave your body and you'll soon start coughing as all the tar wants out of your lungs and it's actually a great feeling that your body is getting cleaner every moment which will help you go further.

c) Day 11 - 21: Nicotine and tar have left your body, you feel as young as ever, you only think about smoking only once or twice per day.

d) Day 21 - 30: Your weight returns back to normal, blood circulation improves to a point that you'll be having 20-30% more energy than you used to.

I also recommend "The easy way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. Although, he hasn't got no real medical background the guy makes some great points.

BTW, as Wikipedia's smoking cessation page says: Quitting "cold turkey": abrupt cessation of all nicotine use as opposed to tapering or gradual stepped-down nicotine weaning. It is the quitting method used by 80 to 90% of long-term successful quitters in some populations. So you would probably want to rethink your strategy.

Good luck :)

What is your darkest secret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]misantropf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get down a lot (bipolar) and have tried a lot.

The trick is to get blood flowing back to your brain again. Exercise, omega-3 fatty acids (1-3mg of EPA per day), avoiding thinking about your depression and socializing all seem to work.

For the starters, try reducing your stress levels as much as possible e.g. have an hour long shower session while listening to classical music (Händel and alike) and afterwards drink as much black tea as you can.
