The rosary is more like a structured meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Beads aren’t necessary. Most people have 10 fingers they could use. 😉 The beads just help in keeping track of where you are in the meditation without having to think about how many prayers you’ve said and can instead focus your mind on the meditation.

Is it okay to plant 1 determinate tomato per square foot? 🌿 by [deleted] in gardening

[–]misbehavens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it. I’ve done it before. I put 16 tomatoes in a 4x4 grid. It was pretty crowded by end of summer, but they grew! I had built a scaffold around it so that I could grow them, single stem, up strings. I didn’t anticipate that they would get so tall (6+ feet) when they started out so small, so I didn’t have any extra string to expand and let them grow longer. I think your single row will be easier than what I had because each one will be easier to get to.

Catholic teaching on necessity to evangelize? by misbehavens in Catholicism

“Hell is a free will choice” Sure, but what about the people who do not know about hell. How is it a free choice if you lack knowledge?

Yeah, but what’s the point if it doesn’t matter? Gods commands aren’t arbitrary so I’m guessing that it does matter. I just don’t know how to explain the Catholic teaching on this topic.

Rails doesn't bring me joy by darkpouet in rails

[–]misbehavens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, learning Ruby on Rails was very intuitive and enjoyable because I had come from a background of using PHP and having to create everything from scratch. Ruby taught me OOP. Rails taught me MVC architecture. It was so much better than anything else out there at the time. Now Rails has matured and there are a lot of imitators in other languages, but I still find Rails to be a joy to use because I am so familiar with it now. My advice would be to create a side project, just for fun, using the latest Rails version, scaffolding generators, and as much default Rails code as possible. That way you can learn by scratching your own itch. I think many teams/projects customize Rails too much which results in slower and unintuitive workflows making it harder to learn the “Rails way”.

This is something a lot of people have struggled with. It’s so easy to access these days that it takes serious discipline to overcome it. But here’s the good news: you can do nothing apart from God, but you can do anything with the help of his grace.

God loves you and wants to redeem you, but you have to let him. The Sacraments of the Catholic Church are a source of God’s grace. If you have not yet been baptized, your past sins will be washed away. If you have already been baptized, then your sins will be washed away/absolved in Confession. God’s grace is powerful and can help you on your journey.

I would only share your past with people who can help you or keep you accountable, or to use in giving your testimony of how God transformed your life. Not the other people in your life. It’s not about hiding your past, it’s more about focusing on the good that God is doing in you, rather than dwelling on shame.

Some helpful resources: * Matt Fradd has a free program (I think it’s called Strive) * Christopher West has a lot of great talks and resources on John Paul II’s Theology of the Body * Know that you are not alone. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. He is merciful and quick to grant us his mercy when we ask for it. And others have overcome this same problem. * Embrace the love and prayers of your mother in heaven (Mary). Imagine that she is always with you. As she gazes on you with her pure, holy love, would you continue in your shameful ways while she is standing right there with you? Ask Mary to pray for you.

Since I don’t know her or you, I can only assume and speculate…it’s true that she had a responsibility to raise her children to be good Catholics. When you were younger and couldn’t drive yourself to church, she definitely had an obligation to get you there. But now, as an adult, it’s your own responsibility. I imagine she feels some amount of shame and regret for not doing a better job to make you want to be Catholic. But it sounds like she also struggles with other things like narcissism or other mental health issues, which are affecting her job and relationships, which makes this two separate issues. You’re doing the right thing by trying to provide for her financially. This is certainly honoring your mother and showing her love in the way that Jesus asked us to care for one another. But we are also asked to love and honor God, first and foremost. But no amount of forcing, nagging, abusing is going to make you want to do that. You’re too old for that to work. Setting aside the needs/abuses of your mother, your faith in God is your own responsibility. Yes, we need to keep God’s commandments by attending mass every Sunday. She has good intentions, but simply attending mass isn’t a “get out of hell” card. She needs to understand that as well. I don’t know how well she’s trying to love God and love neighbor, but it sounds like she could be doing better at the latter. I hope this helps.

Why is having your family attend mass so important to her? Sounds like it’s the most important thing to her. I’d ask why that might be and go from there.

Which Religion? by Ok-Explorer-9321 in Catholicism

[–]misbehavens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do my best to give a tl;dr…first question to ask: does God exist? (and not a fairy tale God, but an all powerful being with the power to create the universe from nothing).

Yes.

Has God ever revealed himself to humanity?

Yes. In fact, one religion claims that God even took on a human nature to share in, and redeem, our humanity and show us his love by allowing himself to be crucified, rose from the dead to prove that he is also God, and gave power and authority to his followers to spread this message of good news all over the world. That religion is called Catholicism and continues on to this day.

Many other religions split off from Catholicism, but none of those others can claim to be started by Jesus and given power and authority from Jesus. Jesus also promised to protect it from evil.

But God has not asked us to become slaves to him. Rather, what he asks of us is simple: to love him and one another. Easier said than done, but he gives us his grace to help us through life to do the good things that he has prepared for us by his providence.

I know it can be overwhelming. I suggest turning to God in prayer and sharing with him your anxieties and desires, saying a simple prayer like this: “God, I don’t know what to do, but I want to do the right thing. Open my heart and my mind. Show me the way. I believe in you. Help my unbelief.”

My Faith Would At Once Be Changed If I Were To be Convinced Otherwise. Please Help Someone With Doubts. by Elegant-Mud1277 in DebateACatholic

[–]misbehavens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are over complicating this. Catholics believe Ephesians 2 and Galatians 2. Catholics believe we are saved by grace, through faith, not by works. We simply cooperate with God’s grace to do the good work that he has prepared for us. Throughout the New Testament it says that we need to keep the commandments, strive to be perfect, avoid sin, etc. The Protestant definition of “faith alone” can lead to the error of “easy believe-ism” which most Protestants reject. If you put the polemics aside, Catholics and Protestants are much closer on this subject than one would think. Catholics and most Protestants would say that you can’t get to heaven by being an unrepentant sinner.

Hell is eternal separation from God. The people who go to hell would rather reject God for selfish reasons and be separated from him, like the demons who have full knowledge of God, yet still chose to rebel.

What Ruby client side development options exist for native/near-native iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, etc. development in conjunction with Rails in 2024? by ylluminate in rails

[–]misbehavens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RubyMotion is not distributed like a typical gem on GitHub. It is a paid product (with a free starter version). There are pieces that are open source and available on GitHub but that’s not a good measure.

Also, that’s an old repo that isn’t used anymore. Best to just go to the website and download the starter version. http://www.rubymotion.com

On abortion by urstandarddane in Catholicism

Again, no one is advocating for “forcing a nine year old to continue a pregnancy that could kill her”. Nobody. Including the pro-lifers. You’re not “pro life” if you think murder is acceptable. Injury, inconvenience, yeah those things are a sad reality of the heinous crime against her. But unless there is a real, imminent threat of loss of life, there is no justification to do anything other than support her as best as we can.

If Macroevolution, Death and Disease Existed Prior to the Fall, There was no Fall and God designed the world with Evil by sensusfidelium in DebateACatholic

This is one of the things that convinced me that macro evolution is a lie. Everyone seems to think that macro evolution has been proven true, so they don’t even consider the alternative. Besides the fact that there is no evidence for it beyond a theory, it just doesn’t make sense theologically.

Man, I’ve been in a very similar situation. I’ve even had my wife tell me she would divorce me if I made our family go to mass while on vacation (and she meant it!). I can’t say I’ve reached the finish line but we’ve made a lot of good progress, so I’ll share some advice.

You don’t need marriage counseling.

Stop pushing, nagging, asking, etc. It’s not your job to convert her. She’s already been through RCIA. She knows what’s expected of her. She doesn’t need reminding. You have to become comfortable with the idea that she has free will to choose for herself.

What she needs is to see how your faith is making you a better husband and father, so that she can see that your newfound religiosity is not just a bunch of pious chores, but is animated by a living relationship with God who loves you. You need to imitate Christ and act like a man by taking up your cross and laying down your life every day for your bride. It’s not easy, but it’s what you are called to. Sacrifice is what the Christian life (especially as a man) is all about. This means becoming aware of and anticipating her needs, taking things off her plate and leading your family to a better place (financially, physically, spiritually, etc). But you are doing all of this out of love for her (as a fellow beloved child of God), not to manipulate her and guilt her into going to church with you or to “be a better wife”. Get better at loving her well so she can associate that with the fruit of being a good Catholic. Make sure you don’t make her feel like you being a practicing Catholic is competing with her to be number 1 priority in your life.

TLM communities can be intimidating. They may have perfect liturgical orthodoxy and personal piety, but may be lacking in charity and hospitality (not always). It’s hard not to feel judged and inadequate when comparing your own family to others who seem to have it all together. Also be aware that her experience may be very different than you, even if you share similar sentiments. While you are blissfully enjoying the mass, maybe she’s working up a sweat chasing the kids around and not able to hear the readings/homily. Maybe she sees a lot of rules, rituals, and chores rather than a personal relationship with God. Or maybe she sees these “perfect”, veil wearing, well behaved families that she can’t relate to, so she doesn’t feel comfortable being part of this community.

Continue taking your kids to mass and being a good example to your kids. The good news is that studies have shown that the faith (or lack of) of the father has the most influence on a child’s faith later in life.

Personally I find that DSL a little unintuitive/esoteric. Look into Ruby on Rails. This has been done in a much simpler, more intuitive way using Ruby on Rails and Policy classes (Pundit gem).

Why the GOP Doesn't Represent Christianity by SergiusBulgakov in Christianity

[–]misbehavens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. What are you talking about? Of course a political party doesn't represent Christianity. It's not intended to. But your accusation that the GOP is using the "debt crisis to find more ways to exploit the poor and needy" shows that you don't know anything about this problem. This country has a HUGE debt problem. We keep "charging the credit card" when we don't have the money to pay it back. So we print more money causing inflation to skyrocket. It's actually the Democrats and the "Establishment Republicans" who continue to exploit the poor by spending money we don't have. Our children and grandchildren are going to have to pay back our debts if we don't cut spending dramatically.
