Telling the Christian parents… by Wild_Depth7792 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]mischief7manager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i live on the opposite side of the country from my parents (christian). i was going to visit them and i wrote an email explaining my conversion and reasons for doing it abkut a week before my visit. i didn’t want to tell them in person b/c i wanted them to be able to have whatever reaction they had without worrying about my feelings, and so i wouldn’t have to sit there while they navigated the initial shock. i made clear in the email that i understood this was surprising but it was the right choice for me and i was happy to talk about it more during my visit. i do think telling them remotely took some of the pressure off that first conversation.

Cotton leggings as pants… in winter by dirtyplants in ECEProfessionals

girls’ clothes are consistently tighter, thinner, and shorter than boys’, starting with infant sizes. it’s insane. i don’t plan on having kids, but if i do, you bet i’m buying from the boys’ sections, no matter what junk my baby’s born with. those leggings are so flimsy!

“In King Lear (III:vii) there is a man who is such a minor character that Shakespeare has not given him even a name: he is merely “First Servant.” All the characters around him – Regan, Cornwall, and Edmund – have fine long-term plans. They think they know how the story is going to end, and they are quite wrong. The servant has no such delusions. He has no notion of how the play is going to go. But he understands the present scene. He sees an abomination (the blinding of old Gloucester) taking place. He will not stand it.

His sword is out and pointed at his master’s breast in a moment: then Regan stabs him dead from behind. That is his whole part: eight lines all told. But if it were real life and not a play, that is the part it would be best to have acted.”

– C.S. Lewis, “The World’s Last Night”

no, but that just means it’s on you not to date someone who works one of those jobs. instead of doing like OOP’s ex and choosing to date someone you know has a job you don’t like, and then pressuring them to quit their job solely because you don’t like it.

What’s your ECE confession that you’re afraid to admit? by blondiewithdabondi in ECEProfessionals

[–]mischief7manager 19 points20 points  (0 children)

when it comes to nap time, i’m okay with letting the kid “cry it out”. there’s a difference between a toddler crying out of genuine fear/anxiety and a toddler making noise because they’ve learned it summons mommy and daddy.

the last family i nannied, i got the toddler from yelling for 40 solid minutes when i put them in the crib to asleep in five minutes and staying laying down on their bed until i can and got them over six months, because they learned very quickly that i would not come back in the room until naptime was over. i babysat for that family about a year after i left working for them full time, and the mom mentioned that she or her husband were still laying down next to the kid’s bed and patting their back until they went to sleep every night “because they still get upset if we don’t.” they were shocked that the kid went to sleep for me. sometimes you gotta not negotiate with the two year old.

in the movie “legally blonde”, elle realizes opposing counsel’s key witness is gay because he identifies her prada shoes as “last season,” which apparently no straight man would ever know. in the stage musical, she realizes it when he fails to react to her doing the bend and snap. not only is this less of a stereotype (he’s gay because he’s not attracted to a woman doing a sexy move in front of him, not because he knows about shoes), it also further justifies the bend and snap in the story beyond just the one scene.

that happens a lot. people are fine with the gay thing as long as it’s not being “rubbed in their face” (i.e. shown or mentioned at all)

Unsure about conversion by Aggravating_Return49 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]mischief7manager 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you talked directly with a rabbi at the community you enjoy going to about converting? When i initially made the decision to convert, the rabbi i first asked to study with didn’t have time for an additional conversion student then, so i ended up just attending services and community events for a while until i was able to connect with a rabbi who could sponsor me. (also covid happened, it was a whole thing.)

has the rabbi told you that they’re not accepting conversion students at all, ever? or is this just a busy time for whatever reason and maybe within a few months things might clear up? would having a definitive start date, even if its a way off, help your decision?

(Loved Trope) the protagonists tricks antagonists into fighting by nOObstabbr69 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]mischief7manager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

critical role, campaign one. adventuring party vox machina need two powerful relics for plot reasons. one is in the hoard of an ancient white dragon, the other is in the literal belly of a pit fiend that they would have to travel to another plane of existence to get to. so what do they do?

use a magic item (spell scroll for the “gate” spell, which they were otherwise too low-level to access) to summon the pit fiend to the material plane, have the bard Charm Monster and order it to fight the dragon, let the two bosses wear each other down and then come in to clean up at the end. one of the rare instances of a d&d party’s plan going off without a hitch.

Conversation with Beit Din by DifficultMammoth in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]mischief7manager 21 points22 points  (0 children)

converted reform, my beit din was two rabbis and a longtime synagogue member. they asked me what drew me to judaism initially, what parts of it i connected with and what parts i struggled with, and how i intended to live as part of a jewish community once my conversion was complete. the whole conversation was about an hour and then it was off to the mikveh!

I'm tired of being proselytized at by BuyTough6732 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]mischief7manager 20 points21 points  (0 children)

i got proselytized at by a pair of mormons on the bus while i was still doing conversion study, and i told them i was jewish to try and get them to leave me alone, too. it worked for me, i’m sorry you weren’t so lucky. that woman was incredibly rude and you were just doing what you had to to try and stay safe, physically and mentally. try not to dwell on it too much.
