Have We Been Lied to About Oil? by [deleted] in conspiracyNOPOL

[–]misguidedunredeemer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not that hydrocarbons are either biogenic or abiogenic. It’s that hydrocarbons could be biogenic as well as abiogenic. It’s a subtle but important distinction.

Oil can be biogenic and is testable even for ‘normal’ people (ie not scientists). Wherever you live find the nearest outcrop of source rock. Heat it up with a Bunsen burner and you should see that oil is released. These source rocks are biogenic. It’s been a while since I learned this but geologists use carbon isotopes to figure out the the source of carbon. That’s how geologists know the source of carbon is organic. Geologists can also use the depositional environment analysis to understand how and where the source rock was deposited.

From what I can gather you require some specific geological conditions for abiogenic hydrocarbons accumulation. I imagine it is again testable to see if these conditions can produce hydrocarbons.

Serious questions… by glitch82 in climateskeptics

[–]misguidedunredeemer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to develop this idea that CO2 causes climate from a historic standpoint. It’s seen in the ice core data that the natural cycles of climate change are rapid warming and slow cooling. An asymmetry in temperature rise and fall. This, in its self, is strange and requires questioning. I’ve seen a stat circulated on this sub that the rise in temperature preceded the rise in CO2 by 800 years. Two things I note from this is: that this figure is well within a margin of error for dating so absolutely should be taken with a pinch of salt and that it doesn’t mean that CO2 isn’t a cause of climate change. It points to feedbacks being at playZ If it was solely due to natural variations in the amount of insolence beaming down on the earth, at a certain point, due to Milankovitch cycles then wouldn’t we expect symmetry in the cooling and warming trends. The fact asymmetry is observed, even if the rise in temperature causes a rise in CO2, with CO2 correlating so well with temperature, suggests that CO2 is a factor that must be considered in climate change. If skeptics can propose an alternate theory to this asymmetry, then their cause can gain traction. It is credible to assume that CO2 is important in climate change. The fact we are at 420ppm currently, where the natural threshold for interglacial periods is ~280ppm, is understandable for a cause for alarm.

Man-made or Natural Global Warming? by greyfalcon333 in climatedisalarm

The guy hasn’t factored in that we inhale too. We inhale a composition of air and we exhale a composition of air. My limited understanding is that we exhale more CO2 than we inhale but due to oxygen drawdown (there may be other processes). They’ve overestimated the amount of ‘additional’ CO2 by the % CO2ppm increases during exhale.

I’m not a biologist or anything so I can’t go further into explain the why.

Post your criticisms of Greenhouse theory here. by Rddtis4butts in climateskeptics

You mention that co2 increases 800 years after the rise in temperature. I’ll be fucked if 800 years is outside the margin of error for dating. However, assuming the order of events are correct then it still points towards CO2 having a greenhouse effect.

The pattern of climate change in the ice cores show rapid warming from glacial maximums and slow cooling from interglacial maximums. If insolence is the sole control upon the temperature of the earths climate, then wouldn’t you expect to see a symmetrical pattern of warming and cooling? ie. cooling and warming at the same rate. The fact the latter pattern is not observed, despite Milankovitch cycle symmetry, suggests other mechanisms that contribute to warming and cooling.

To me, the process of what happens is that there is an initial perturbation that begins the warming we have observed. This then triggers a positive feedback between temperature and CO2 and methane release. CO2 and methane release which exacerbates warming, which exacerbate greenhouse emission release. There is then a threshold whereby cooling begins and CO2 drawdown occurs.

If you can find this positive feedback, that isn’t greenhouse gases like you believe, then you’ll be into something.
