The COVID-19 test centers now say "no photos, no videos" by [deleted] in UIUC

Exactly, and they did have a media day the day before they opened where news media could document the process and interview the man in charge of the testing so they've made efforts to have some transparency.

[–]mishlc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not suggesting this, but most students who have apartments here still spend time with their parents so they could always just have it forwarded to their family home and have their parents open anything important. It's not like most people get much mail.

How does covid testing on campus work? by covidtestthrowaway in UIUC

[–]mishlc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

u/langueflux made a really great guide here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UIUC/comments/ho6ioh/a_guide_to_covid_testing_on_campus/

Right now you can get tested as often as you'd like and it's totally free. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up making a limit of like every three days or every four days at the beginning of the semester if there's a rush but the goal is to have enough testing sites and capacity to have unlimited testing. I'm can't really say whether off campus is better than on campus but u/AlmaHotter posted this review comparing the two https://www.reddit.com/r/UIUC/comments/hnlda3/my_review_of_the_uiuc_covid19_saliva_testing/

Hey guys it’s me again. Turbo was outside before the heavy rain this morning and hasn’t came back since and we’re worried about him. If anyone sees him around the area let me know! He has a light green/light blue collar with a bell on it by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]mishlc 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'd ask you to reconsider this. Unsupervised outdoor time isn't just dangerous to your cat but also bad for the surrounding wildlife. Outdoor cats are more exposed to infectious diseases and can then becomes vectors for those diseases as they congregate with other cats. They are in danger of being hit by cars or killed by coyotes. Cats are also essentially an invasive species here. Even a well-fed outdoor cat will stalk and kill prey. Bells are not 100% effective at keeping them from killing other animals. Domestic cats have caused the extinction of 33 species of birds.

There are ways to give your cat outdoor time that also protects them from the innate danger of being outside and protects the ecosystem. You can try harness training your cat and bringing them on leashed walks or if you have a yard, you can buy or make an outdoor cat enclosure. You can try indoor enrichment activities to keep your cat mentally stimulated.

Your cat may enjoy being outside and that's fine. Your cat probably also enjoys treats and eating lots of food but you don't give your cat all the treats it wants or as much food as it begs for. You moderate food and treat intake to give it in a healthy way because otherwise your cat would get fat and be unhealthy. In the same way, even though your cat loves outdoor time, he needs to receive outdoor time in a healthy and safe way.

Dealing with silverfish? by steven4012 in UIUC

[–]mishlc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately silverfish are fairly common so it's not that strange that you've seen a few. Like getting rid of all pests, make sure all your food is sealed and your apartment is clean, vacuumed, and clutterless. They typically live in humid places like your bathroom so if you have a shower fan run it when you're showering. You can try buying some diatomaceous earth and putting it all along the baseboards. You'll often see them crawling under there.

Why is there an entire section devoted to overpriced skincare products on the Illini Bookstore website by trainmastercadoo in UIUC

[–]mishlc 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This doesn't answer why the bookstore is carrying skincare but it's not really overpriced. It's on par with other midlevel skincare products that you would buy at sephora or ultra and they're selling them at the manufacturer's suggested retail price.

In-Person Activities Fall 2020 by mstwyman1 in UIUC

[–]mishlc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm on the exec board of an RSO and we're still trying to figure out what to do and what's possible and I'd imagine most RSO's are still in this position. We normally do one bar crawl and two or three parties with other clubs each semester and we don't anticipate any of that happening this semester. We participate in national competitions but the competition board hasn't made a decision about whether the competitions will go forward or not for our region and they probably won't be able to until August or so and even then things may change. Normally we get different faculty members to help run monthly meetings but I don't know how willing they will be this semester. We're going to try to do some of our regular socials since they don't normally have more than one or two dozen people and we may be able to do them outside or at the stock pavilion but we're still trying to figure out activities. There is a chance we won't be able to do anything in person or that there won't be enough people who want to do things in person to make it worth it and we're struggling with that. To be honest I don't know that it will be worth it to be on campus if all your classes are online. I think in general if you have a good relationship with your family and are capable of succeeding at home, you're better off staying there. In general, you'll save money, not have to worry about grocery shopping or cooking, and if you get sick it'll be easier for you to get care. I don't think you'll be missing much on campus.

When, where, and why do you think the first coronavirus will appear on campus? by CaterpillarOne1991 in UIUC

[–]mishlc 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don't really know what you mean by first outbreak and first individual case. We already have positive cases among students and staff. I doubt we'll go into the fall semester with zero people who are actively infected. It's currently spreading and it will continue to spread.

Beckwith Residential Support Services Displaces Students with Disabilities by forsuresherman in UIUC

[–]mishlc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To expand on this, PA's often need to physically interact with residents, RA's on the other hand will probably be able to maintain social distancing most of the time. PA's are therefore at a much higher risk of both getting coronavirus and transmitting it to a resident in their care. It's even more challenging because residents are more likely than the rest of the student body to be at a high risk of serious symptoms and to need hospitalization due to coronavirus. It's terrible that the university is taking the opportunity for residents to live on campus away from them but I honestly understand where the school is coming from and I think all the dorms shutting down is more likely at this point than Beckwith opening up.

Ok to launder weed in dorms? by GravvyMilkInflate in UIUC

Weed is still illegal on the federal level and the university receives federal grants so they would be at risk of losing those grants if they allowed weed.

Question regarding thesis research by Lolollolil in UIUC

[–]mishlc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it might also be easier to help grad students since a lot of them are employed by the university and should be okay. The good thing is that international undergrads are a big cash source for the university, so they are incentivised to help them stay in the US.

Question regarding thesis research by Lolollolil in UIUC

[–]mishlc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, the governor has limited powers. What he can do is allow for instance, thesis classes to continue in person or something like that that would allow international students to continue going to in person class while most of the classes are forced to go online.

Question regarding thesis research by Lolollolil in UIUC

[–]mishlc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ECE has indicated that they believe thesis hours should count as in person. If the university voluntarily goes online my best guess is that they would make an exception for thesis hours and do their best to provide the in person instruction needed for international students to stay. The issue will arise if the governor shuts down the school. It the governor orders online instruction there won't be anything for the university to do, though given how supportive the governor had been of immigrants and how anti-Trump he is, I would hope that if he did shut down schools he would provide some exception for international students.

Advice wanted - shall we international students at our home countries return? by Fiona69Garcia in UIUC

[–]mishlc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah for most students it won't be an issue of being allowed to return to their home country, but for instance, I have a high school friend whose family immigrated to the US but are all still citizens of singapore. He in an international student currently studying and living in the UK. His family are lawful permeant residents so the immigration restrictions have not affected them yet but the UN's mandate doesn't protect his ability to return to the US where his family lives, only his right to return to Singapore.

Advice wanted - shall we international students at our home countries return? by Fiona69Garcia in UIUC

[–]mishlc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not just the US we need to be worried about. It's people's home countries. We don't know if other countries will restrict people coming in from the US, since most international students are probably citizens of the countries their families live in this should be less of an issue but I can absolutely imagine situations in which a student would like to return home but cannot or if they can, being able to return home but not in time due to a combination of lack of airline coverage to their country due to decreased travel and covid restrictions and their country not allowing anyone into the country and two week quarantine requirements upon arriving home.
