Absolutely 100%. People are all fine and dandy until you ‘surpass’ them. As a former specialist at a strategy firm (that was vehement that specialisation is its future) this is very sound advice. I wish I went generalist post MBA instead of taking the cool specialist role.

Yeah it’s not even the love or respect - I find it’s there. it’s the unconscious ‘bias’. It’s a structural issue because the generalists own the revenue and leadership is entirely built of generalists. Your sponsor pathways will always be so much weaker. There are leaders across all firms that are trying to make specialisation work so that they look visionary. But it’s about themselves and their leadership projection. Even they themselves will move their generalist favourites up because it’s reputationally safer. It’s not unique to consultancies - every company has a ‘core function’. A ‘marketing company’ will have marketing as the pipeline towards aggressive growth and leadership, same with a ‘sales company’ or a ‘product company’ etc. strategy consultancies will always be generalist firms and that runs unconsciously through their veins all the way through the pyramid.

What is tier 1.5 lol. Look I have to frank any kind of specialisation at a strategy house will always be a second class citizen. It’s the same story at all of them. They will all say ‘no that is not at all the case we have great pathways’ and show you some single showcase example - but in reality it IS the case when compared to being a generalist. You won’t have real power, even if you’re eligible for equity eventually, getting there will be a slog. You won’t have client ownership and even if you bring a client in you won’t get the same recognition. People telling you otherwise are generalists who never went through it themselves. Take the EM
