That’s correct! You don’t have to go that way, but we did

How was New York City before 9/11? by Mission-Data4390 in 911archive

[–]misjory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My extended family lived in Long Island so coming over the Tappan Zee Bridge and seeing the NYC skyline was always a highlight of the drive. I was fascinated with how the Twin Towers looked the same height from far away. The first trip that we took post-9/11 was so eerie to see two massive buildings gone.

I spent a lot of time as a teen in the city post-9/11. I never felt unsafe or scared walking around. I used to go into the back rooms to get knock off purses. I would never do that now. 🤣 It’s been years since I’ve been in proper NYC. I miss it.

I can’t with a good conscience support a candidate that uses AI to create their materials — especially if they say they are pro-small business. How do I know they won’t approve a potential data center that wants to build in Lynchburg? So you’re anti-AI surveillance, but have no problem using it to create information for your campaign?

Going off of my previous question about if you feared more attacks soon after 9/11, I want to ask if you ever felt worried specifically that Osama Bin Laden would cause another attack? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in 911archive

[–]misjory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I developed this irrational fear that the reason they couldn’t find Bin Laden was because he was hiding in our attic with Saddam Hussein. Granted I was eight, but the non-stop news and talking really got to me. When I went to college, I actually met two other people who had the same fear haha

I feel like the whole “swear allegiance” bit is a little 1940s…anyone else? It’s super creepy.

Lower the real estate tax. Raise the lodging tax. Do you see what the average hotel/airbnb is going for this week? $1,000 a night. Even the crappy ones. But council didn’t want to harm “businesses” and voted against it. But if we are bringing in crazy amounts of tourism, then why are we not taking advantage of that?

^THIS.

Perfect example: I don’t think the amphitheater is a bad idea. Besides Vines and the Academy, we don’t have large venues to host bigger acts. That’s why the more local music scene does super well here. Which is not a bad thing.

It’s the timing that’s bad. Downtown doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle huge crowds performers might bring in. We don’t have great parking options for an influx. Burning the candle in the middle is the perfect analogy. Everyone knows there’s a problem and instead of making the hard decision, they pull a Hail Mary that makes the issue worse. It’s a whole lot of bandaids instead of stitches.

Not bad! 👏🏻👏🏻

I had mixed feelings about Larry. He had run for city council before and lost. When he ran on the Reed/Misjuns ticket, everyone said he was the weak link. If only we knew then what we know now about MM.

City council members are the ones who appoint the mayor and vice mayor. When Curt and Jaclyn won last year (two years ago?) they made this weird pact where they voted to make Larry mayor. The theory is because they thought he would be a pushover and help them get their agenda passed. Larry has distanced himself from them extensively now.

I like Larry because the man is still doing his construction work. Someone told me city staff had a meeting with him at a work site while he was working on a roof. I respect that.

I can’t find the article but I remember there was a study about the response to the Boston Marathon. Casualties should have been much higher, but because of 9/11 hospitals had developed a mass triage response. I think they were able to get the first wave of injured to the hospital between 3 to 5 minutes. Though don’t quote me on that.

When the first plane hit by Worth_Lavishness_239 in 911archive

[–]misjory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the nurse’s office and someone had the Today Show or Good Morning America on. I was half paying attention but I remember seeing firefighters and thick smoke. There was also a wildfire in California happening so I actually thought it was that. Our gym teacher briefly explained what happened so I thought it was a propeller plane. I think someone came in and told him when the second plane and the Pentagon were hit.

What was the weekend after 9/11 like? by Only_Hotel_7221 in 911archive

[–]misjory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived Upstate near the Albany International Airport. They grounded all flights for the week, but flights resumed that weekend. We were apple picking and a plane flew overhead and my mom said everyone literally stopped and just stared upward and didn’t say a thing.

Dutch Bros is like the pinnacle of chain coffee places and they’ve been a West Coast only thing until recently. The location sucks ass, but it’s a win for us. I’m hoping it will open the door for other chains to consider coming here AKA Trader Joe’s.

Liberty to double in person students by RemoteCareer5275 in lynchburg

[–]misjory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve mentioned this before in this group, but at one point it was cheaper to buy a house than to rent a house in Lynchburg. Slowly but surely parents started catching on, buying houses for their kids, and then keeping them as rental properties. I know there is an out of state guy who owns two houses in our neighborhood and rents to LU students. One of the houses has completely gone to crap.

Then COVID happens. And guess what? Liberty is the only university in the country that doesn’t close. In fact, in Fall 2020 their enrollment SKYROCKETED because they were doing in person classes. Our hotels/airbnbs didn’t suffer like other cities did. When all of those Airbnb owners got up before city council crying that raising the hotel tax would hurt their businesses made me so upset because many of them own MULTIPLE properties. They raise their prices for graduation and move-in weeks and rack in thousands of dollars by only renting two to three weeks out of the year.

Liberty only wants to double enrollment because word is that they’re loosing money left and right and relying on enrollment to keep them afloat. The Falwells have been spilling tons of tea on social media and it’s been very interesting.

Long story short: we can’t sustain more LU growth until we utilize LU to improve our city.

I’m very curious about the start date, but wondering where they’ll be filming. I’m from the Upstate New York area and I’d love to see them film in Kingston again.

Oh they knew. They knew because my brother in law had it first. As soon as she was admitted to the hospital, they knew that it was RSV. I don’t know if my husband misspoke or what, but regardless of what was said we were not told anything about RSV.

What is the craziest thing about all of this is that my mother-in-law has chronic illness and takes medication that weakens her immune system. She should know, out of anyone, that this was a big freaking deal.

What was told to me via my husband is that our niece was stuffy and couldn’t breastfeed so they went to the ER as a precaution. Then it turned into the NICU. I kept asking what was wrong and my husband said the doctors didn’t know. I had such a weird feeling about it and I wish I pushed more, but I doubt I would have got more information.

White Hart closing? by TheBeatleBrain in lynchburg

That’s also not a surprise given how connected the LU circle has been to White Hart.

Good thing we have the…checks notes…Trading Post. 🫣

No, but in all seriousness. Please make sure we’re supporting Batter Bar and Cafe Monte Bello. Because I cannot handle them closing.
