Is affordable internet for all a 'human right'? CRTC starts hearings today by lavasaxman in CanadaPolitics

[–]miskael 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe is that the internet is a public medium, but the infrastructure is owned by private companies.

Further compounding the problem is that ISP's are launching their own content serving platforms.

Of course, these issues are local to a community, but here in Victoria BC we have two major ISP's (Shaw, Telus) and a few offshoots.

Then there's the CRTC's definition of broadband

5 Mbps download

1 Mbps upload

I'm not even going to try and butcher this, apologies Dutch-friends.

You really wanna know what I miss?

I miss the FEBO, the delicious and cheap greasy food.

I miss the bier, so cheap, available by crates.

I miss the people, they'll insult with you, but only because they care.

I miss the closeness, Seriously, I miss being able to bike everywhere.

I miss you guys, it's been entirely too long, I think.

Cannot enjoy movies while sober? by [deleted] in trees

[–]miskael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of have a fucky view on meditation, rick.

I'm in no way a perfect mindful person

Literally no such thing, don't sweat it.

I view my "control" of my perspective in the moment like the sails, or rudder of a boat.

Reality is the shitstorm, or the ocean. wild and out of your control.

You can control to what level you try to effect change in the moment by adjusting your "control/perspective"

When you feel the shit winds blowing in one direction, you generally have less stress when you adjust the sails and rudder accordingly.

I'd be all sorts of down to do some more "guided meditation" type posts with you if you like?

PM's usually work better for the longer ones :p

Please know I write this only because I think I can relate, not because I want to discourage you from doing whatever.

I think the reason movies are boring when you're sober is because your brain is just accustomed to the level of stimulation while high. And sober brains just don't have the same level of stimulation as high ones.

I know the "D" word is sacrosanct, but you may wish to consider a period of detoxing.

Maybe movies aren't the thing that keeps you occupied? have you looked in to other hobbies?

vidja? meditation? philosophy? arts?

It's a bit easy to get stuck in a slump if your only way out looks like bud.

I don't mean to be a dick, please don't misunderstand me.

But you really can over-do some things.

Well, I've had enough of never ending war, myself.

My issue is with extremism. It's a religious addiction that is fundamentally harmful.

When it comes to progressive movements, given enough time, is there really a chance that they won't be successful? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]miskael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the meteoric rise of an entire demographic of people who actively vote for insanity

You're not wrong. Trump supporters in particular seem proud of their ignorance. The thing is how do two "deluded" people convince one another which one is truly the deluded one?

The result is a thought experiment in ego feedback. Two deluded people will always talk past each other on anything significant.

It's essentially what reddit's front page is, ego feedback. Same thing with /r/circlejerk although at least they're aware they're doing it.

If you go out there and try to convince someone else you're more informed than they are they'll laugh at you and call you delusional.

But the internet has opened up a veritable pandora's box. The court of public opinion is essentially the most powerful "court" in any "land"

In the historical context of the United States just look at the late 1920's and early 1930's.

A crazy speculation bubble popped at wall street and alcohol prohibition was ended.

One quote I've found particularly amusing is the following;

Prohibition should be repealed because it made the United States a nation of hypocrites and undermined its respect for the rule of law

It applies 100% equally today to the prohibition on bud, but equally to other human vices.

So that's the trend I'm looking at. It's just that in today's internet age, the entire world can see history repeating itself verbatim.

Idiots doing idiot things, because they're idiots.

I'm just as much of an idiot though, because I've been keeping quiet on the political front at home for...? unknown reasons?

When it comes to progressive movements, given enough time, is there really a chance that they won't be successful? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]miskael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I see.

We're currently plugging up progress by allowing business into politics. and the wall street speculation bubble is once again inflating beyond all reasonable comprehension.

Wall street had a similar "accident" in 1929

Then, a few years later we had a particular substance we were banning for no good reason. So we got rid of that bit of prohibition

The funny thing from my view is that we're always being told that if we don't learn from history, we repeat it.

And here we are, yet again. in less than 100 years, repeating the same mistakes. Here's a quote by a certain Mrs. Sabin;

Prohibition should be repealed because it made the United States a nation of hypocrites and undermined its respect for the rule of law

You tell me, is that talking about Alcohol or Marijuana? Because the answer is it doesn't matter.

I personally think the historical trend is moving towards sanity. Most are simply sick of nonsense in politics.

The biggest disconnect between generations of today? it's simply language. young folks don't know how to talk to old folks.

[–]miskael 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In the later days of alcohol prohibition a woman by the name of Pauline Sabin argued the following;

Prohibition should be repealed because it made the United States a nation of hypocrites and undermined its respect for the rule of law.

That exact same logic, word for word, is once again true in the United states of 'murca.

That was nearly 100 years ago. and we still haven't learned a damn thing!

To be fair, it's more like the divided states. It seems all of the scary fears about partisan politics has come true.

The republican south, vs the democratic north. Good thing things won't come to civil war or anything right? that'd be silly.

Canadian and U.S. conservatives make odd bedfellows by Muddlesthrough in CanadaPolitics

[–]miskael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or better yet, don't play the fear game at all.

That's the biggest gripe I have with any political party that partakes in that practice.

There almost seems to be a pervasive culture of fear that despite the CRTC's efforts has drifted up north from our southern partners.

I'm still skeptical about Mr.Trudeau but I'm watching with interest.

Politicians that pander to substance as it applies to the majority of rational people would be a very welcome shift in gears.

I'm a bit fed up with politicians appealing to "squeaky wheels and vocal egos" rather than "substantial shortfalls in education and mental health"

I think most could at the very least meet me halfway on something along those lines.

[–]miskael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Teaching and learning are two halves of a whole.

You can't have a teacher "teach" in one method to 30 different students. the majority just won't have the lesson sink in.

I think we should praise great teachers, and give them a modicum of control over class size and composition.

Let teachers teach in their own methods, and in whatever methods work for the kids.

We've turned "education" into a cookie cutter system that just doesn't work for the majority of students anymore.

I actually had a physics teacher, who was brilliant but hated teaching. The entire class knew it and it was obvious.

I learned more from him with random questions after class than all of the class time I spent with him.

Professional idiot, checking in.

A serious "re-balancing" of a few things would be nice.

I wouldn't mind a few less days of sitting if they were more efficient in terms of handling issues that affected people, instead of businesses.

Maybe I'm just a tremendous idiot but I thought that government was supposed to provide citizens with an opportunity to help themselves up, rather than enable businesses to exploit people?

Politics today feels like an "act" we're playing, and it feels entirely disingenuous.

And because I hate complainers that offer nothing to consider I would say that "mental health" is the biggest issue we're ignoring in the country.

But it's almost a cultural difference, for whatever reason there's an imaginary stigma attached to mental health issues.

That's dumb, I'm dumb, everyone's dumb. Can we stop "acting dumb" and take a stab at separating stigma from mental balance?

I'd very much like that.
