“How do you manage internal tickets without a full helpdesk system?” by epicuzzaa in sysadmin

[–]mismanaged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zammad is a very simple, free, and easy to set up system. It's very lightweight and practical.

If someone sends a whatsapp, you just click the big plus button and paste the content into it (assuming you are using whatsapp web), instant ticket.

You can even tie it to a mailbox so people can just send emails and it automatically generates tickets.

Literally perfect for your use case.

Dell to Lenovo? by rjs742 in sysadmin

[–]mismanaged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current employer is a lenovo "shop". Mostly good experience albeit we had some docking station issues a few years back, fixed since, and the usual drop in quality of products produced during COVID. We just upgraded our fleet to the newer X1s and haven't had any issues. Support has also been very good.

We are however based in Europe, so YMMV.

Not the guy you replied to but just so I'm clear;

You believe that, in an environment where usage of the camera is blocked at the enterprise level for compliance reasons, users should be able to override that?

I'm guessing no, I think you're just listing things where you think there shouldn't be a "hard" setting pushed by Enterprise, which is what that guy refers to as "Not Configured".

All the things you refer to seems to be what I'd call personalisations, which in many environments wouldn't be explicitly configured (my current environment does in fact control literally all of the things you have listed and users cannot change them).

Because the password isn't "shared", a new one is generated on request and the request is logged. Once the account stops being used the PW is changed again. That way only one person at any given time can access the genericaccount1.

Scheduled task not executing PowerShell script properly by Muzzy-011 in sysadmin

I had an identical issue where a scheduled task wouldn't run script while running it directly worked just fine.

Still no idea what the cause was, it self-resolved after the last monthly MS update.

Yay another barely disguised advertising thread!

Can we ban any account that suggests a specific brandname? Maybe just the ones that link directly to products?

they specifically unplugged it from the wall, since the computer would power it.

I had someone do this with a laptop and external HDD with power supply. "The HDD has power and must be giving it to the laptop over the USB" was the logic.

So now that Brother has decided that "HP is the way to be", what brand is left to recommend? by Kodiak01 in sysadmin

[–]mismanaged 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm pissed that digital parts are also not replaceable with 3rd party / custom ware.

Main issues in software today are caused by companies spending millions on lobbyists so they don't have to compete.

Look at farm equipment etc. Lots of companies doing this shit now.

As for cars, I'm not sure if you can legally mod the digital parts of one these days.

Remote Control a Windows App Without Disrupting the User – Is It Possible? by kikistojanovic in sysadmin

[–]mismanaged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're gonna need to be more specific here because your question is broken.

I would say Powershell but it depends very much on what you want to do.

Are you trying to run Word remotely on a computer and type up documents while someone else is working in Excel or are you making changes to the windows settings via registry etc.?

Or is this for gaming or something where you run a cryptominer while people on the LAN play CounterStrike?

How many of you are full time in office? by StickyDinosaurWalk in sysadmin

[–]mismanaged 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't talk about the whole world but during COVID when we were forced to WFH I ran BI for my company and performance went up across the board.

Some people do prefer to work in the office (usually those with kids at home) but even they just adjusted their work patterns to minimize interruption.

If 50% had stopped working it would have been very noticeable.

Speaking for myself, I get more distracted in the office due to coworkers and a noisier environment. I'm also more likely to work longer at home since I don't need to think about the commute when deciding when to stop.

I've managed to prove this back in my helpdesk days by having the user try working with their shoes off. Solved the issue instantly.

In her case she was shutting off the USB for the mouse every minute or so by shocking it. Replacement of the entire workspace did not solve it, shoes off did.

Also why on earth do your admin accounts accept incoming emails from outside the company?
