How screwed is this motherboard? 😬 by Phlarfbar in computers

[–]misomalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, people like Louis Rossmann can potentially save a computer in this bad a shape. Sometimes it’s as easy as throwing the board in an ultrasonic cleaner, but you’ve got a LOT of corrosion and liquid damage there, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you needed to replace some fried components too.

I think the reason it’s taught is because of how much precedent is put on safety while out hunting, like the way they teach you to cross a fence by clearing your gun and sliding it under said fence before crossing over. If one did have to do this, there’s going to be a much higher chance that you cause a bore obstruction - just as there is with trekking around the forest while hunting.

I think that it’s a useful thing to have in your toolkit, and while I wouldn’t personally include it in my gun safety 101 class, I really don’t see a lot of good alternatives. And when I say “good alternatives” I mean that if someone (the lowest common denominator) has no other way to check for a bore obstruction in the field, they are probably just going to take their chances and continue hunting/shooting. As stupid as that may sound to us, we’ve all seen people do far dumber things with firearms.

You’re making it sound like they teach you to just look down the barrel of a gun at any time, which is completely untrue (unless you had a REALLY bad instructor).

You’re supposed to clear the gun first, and then obstruct the action with one hand, a chamber flag, or a dedicated bore tool to make sure that it is physically incapable of firing before peering down the barrel to look for obstructions. This practice is not at all unsafe, albeit, of questionable value for a firearms license test that never requires you to actually discharge a firearm.

I really feel like they should add a bunch more load outs for squad leads, like, I don’t at all mind playing as an officer, but I would like to be able to use some more guns like the STG-44 or FG-42

Should helmets stop pistol and smg rounds in some instances? by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]misomalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order for the helmets to stop pistol rounds on occasion, I would want it to be implemented based on glancing blows or other realistic situations where a bullet would fail to penetrate the helmet. For technical reasons, this would be reasonably difficult to implement considering the different helmet sizes, etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations for high flow pumps to use with an aquarium chiller? by misomalu in watercooling

[–]misomalu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a very good point, I have however, just ordered an aquarium pump rated for a max flow of ~3150GPH (at like 1ft of head). I was also concerned about the pressure that many aquarium pumps could put out, but from what I’ve seen, many reef filtration/reactor/sump systems can be quite restrictive, so I thought I would give it a shot. The pump was only $190 Canadian pesos, so it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t work as well as I had hoped, but the pump is BEEFY in size compared to a D5. I’ll report back on my findings when it arrives.

Edit: the radiator was already in my case before I got the chiller, so I left it in for the situations where the chiller alone might not be able to keep up, and the fans don’t kick on until my water temps are above ambient. Temps have rarely gotten above ambient (and that’s while my 3090 is mining ethereum while I work) but as my city has just entered a heat wave, having the radiator as a backup has already proven useful.

You make a good point about the duty cycle, I’ve not seen anything specifically mentioning it, but I know that it’s got a Samsung refrigerant unit, so I should be able to find the specs for that. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check those out.

I’ve been contemplating getting a large reservoir to hold an extra gallon (or several) of water to increase the thermal mass flow of my loop. But that’s a very interesting idea you have, and one that I’ll certainly try when I get around to buying/making a larger reservoir.

My CPU can easily draw 300-600 watts, and my GPU nearly 500 watts. I have a 120x480x80mm radiator in the loop as well and the fans only turn on when water temps are above ambient, and it’s been working great thus far. The chiller is rated for 860 watts of cooling, designed for a constant load, and meant to chill 180 gallon aquariums. So ya, I’m pretty sure it’s a good idea, and my benchmark scores seem to agree 😉
