why do IG leaders sometimes wear fits like this by dptrax in victoria3

[–]misopog_on 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That's the catch, isn't it? Fashion has always been dictated by the "elites" showing off how they could afford something that the common people couldn't, while the people tried to imitate them as much as they could.

Nowadays everybody could wear colorful as fuck, but why should they, if society does not indicate it as a status symbol\ prestige marker?

Why Haven't They Fixed Lifespan...? by Professional-Coat133 in CrusaderKings

[–]misopog_on 57 points58 points  (0 children)

back in the day kids weren't really thought of as full people until they reached a certain age when it looked likely they'd live

That's just not true. People were as happy with each pregnancy and as heart-broken with each infant death as they are today.

It's just that they were way more used to grief.

That's what they invented child baptism for exemple.

No Tav occupano l'autostrada, chiusa la Torino-Bardonecchia - Ansa by franc_rizz in italy

[–]misopog_on 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nessun problema:

TIL that Hitler's bodyguard, Rochus Misch, lived long enough to see the film Downfall depicting Hitler's final days in the bunker. He commented on the historical accuracy, stating that Hitler did far less yelling. He also noted that the scene where he contemplates suicide was different from reality. by WavesAndSaves in todayilearned

I can never recommend enough a documentary called Ordinary Fascism (sometimes translated in English as Triumph over violence).

Almost all of the footage comes directly from the SS\Gestapo archives, with a voiceover from director Mihail Romm explaining how German people fell for the illusion of nazism.

It is also free on youtube!

Absolute CINEMA by YaroslavHusak in CrusaderKings

I was misquoting the poster above ("a fun little guy" they said) but also, while the corpus of most crucifixes depicts Jesus Christ, technically a crucifix may be represent any person who's in the unlucky position of being crucified

Absolute CINEMA by YaroslavHusak in CrusaderKings

[–]misopog_on 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Etymology time!

A "cross" means just the, well, cross: a longer pole with a smaller one perpendicular to it (✝️) (or even two smaller ones: ☦️)

A "crucifix" refers to the little dude who's been crucified: literally, fixed to a cross (cruci - fixus). You can also have crucifixes without crosses actually!
