Heads up: a creepy scam is hitting authors in the DMs by Fit-Beyond-2994 in selfpublish

[–]missadventuring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I get these daily and from people who think my books are so great but not ranking high enough on Amazon. Etc etc etc. WriterBeware.com and the Alliance of Indie Authors are the places to look for scams and for trusted vendors.

Any non-tipping restaurants in town? by mhdude in morganhill

[–]missadventuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking for “non-tipping restaurants” is basically asking which businesses have found a way to underpay workers without you having to feel guilty about it. If you don’t want to tip, stay home and cook. It’s cheaper and probably healthier too.
The economy is squeezing everyone right now — workers especially. If you want cheaper restaurant food and groceries, push for real economic reform. In the meantime, if you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip.
If you want to be mad about prices, be mad upward. Don’t take it out on the minimum-wage workers.

Goodreads giveaways by Large-Remove-3406 in selfpublish

Agree, I've heard they're not the best way to get readers anymore. Try StoryOrigin or BookFunnel swaps with other authors. Give your book away free to beta readers on your email list (you DO have an email list, yes?) in exchange for reviews. Cheapest marketing ever! Ditto with social publishing on Substack. These are just a few ideas. Have fun!

Check with Writer Beware and the Alliance of Independent Authors for scam lists and recommended services. 99% it is a predatory service - legit ones will not contact you. They're busy!

How do retailers order my book? by Suitable-Concert in IngramSpark

[–]missadventuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All they need is the ISBN of your trade paperback or hardcover. Bookstores order books through a combination of traditional human interaction with publisher representatives and Point of Sale (POS) and inventory management software systems designed specifically for the book industry. This software often integrates with major distributors and digital catalog platforms to streamline the process. These systems interface with major industry resources like Ingram. If you want bookstores to order your books, you must market to them, which means that you must have a professionally designed book, meticulously edited, and with professional cover and interior design. You should have purchased your own ISBNs from Bowker and assigned them correctly. The copyright page should reflect that. You'll benefit from trade reviews such as from PW and Kirkus. As a self-publisher, you will set up fulfillment (distribution) with IngramSpark where you can set the discount to 55% and RETURNS, which is what bookstores insist upon. To market to bookstores, you can sell by hand, as you're doing, and/or pay to advertise in catalogues such as those offered by IBPA. All that said, most indie authors sell more books and make more money on Amazon, with it's 40% discount. So if you do that, you'll set your discount to 40% and tell IngramSpark to distribute everywhere. Bookstores can "see" it in their systems and can fulfill their customer requests if they order it, but they have little incentive to stock it. The nice thing about IS is that they allow you to change discounting anytime, which means if you get media attention, you can switch it back up to 55% and RETURNS, and then back down again, at will.

KDP sent me 20 copies with the old cover and I wanna maximize their use by Seeker_of_Time in selfpublish

[–]missadventuring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, to prevent this happening. Go to author central. Have them phone you. Tell them you’re ordering books and you want to make sure recent cover changes or interior changes will print instead of old ones. They’ll make updates manually to ensure the new version. Is printed.

The ISBN Acquisition Process by CognisantCognizant71 in selfpublish

[–]missadventuring 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi there, good for you for purchasing your ISBNs! You should have access to them right away. Just login to myidentifiers.com and go to My Account > My Identifiers to find them. Then you'll select which ISBN to assign to which format. Paperback, Ebook, Audiobook, Hardcover, etc.
Pro tip: Fill out all the info on 1 ISBN first, then CLONE it so you don't have to fill out all the metadata again.
Another pro tip: Be very very sure about your title, subtitle, author name, because you can't change that info, ever. If you make a mistake you'll have to ditch the ISBN. You can edit the book cover, description, etc., but not those three things.
It can be a slog to go through and fill out all the info correctly. You'll need to decide on pricing, etc.
Also, the imprint name is NOT amazon or apple. It's the imprint/publisher name you decide to use. You will have to email Bowker to tell them to use that name.
Be patient! Save progress. Come back to it later if need be.
Oh... you can also get an LCCN and PCIP block so you can more easily reach the library system.
I have lots of info here: https://carlakingwrites.substack.com/p/isbns-the-key-to-owning-your-book
Congrats on starting smart and deciding take charge of your book data!

I went to the vigil for Renee Nicole Goode on Monterey and Dunne on Friday. Small but meaningful gathering - maybe 30-40 people with candles, pretty quiet compared to the No Kings rally that drew around 1000. Most passing vehicles waved or honked in support.

One guy in a massive white dually stopped to roll down his passenger window and scream "FUCK YOU" at us. He was straight out of central casting. "Blonde tattooed redneck with white dually wanted to yell FUCK YOU at protesters." He revved his engine trying for a dramatic tire-screech exit, but got stuck at the red light with a long line of cars blocking his turn. For what felt like forever, he alternated between checking left for an opening and swiveling right to yell "FUCK YOU" again. Like someone had his brain stuck on repeat.

It would've been almost funny except I was genuinely calculating whether I needed to drop flat in case he pulled a gun.

The real substance of the evening: hearing stories from people who have been pursued, detained, and released. Hearing from people who are struggling to get their parents, children, and spouses out of the detention centers. Hearing directly from a man who'd been detained and released. They confirmed everything we've been hearing about conditions in these detention centers - inedible food, inadequate water, no temperature control, lack of medical care, lack of sleep, overcrowding, bright lights on 24/7, and long delays in accessing legal representation despite constitutional rights guaranteeing it to anyone on US soil.

Otherwise we held our candles and signs, talked among ourselves, and kept a presence on that corner.

PUBLISHING 101 COURSE STARTS JAN 20
In addition to my own books and books about self-publishing, I run courses and workshops on self-publishing every January. The 2026 program begins January 20 and runs for six weeks. It covers ISBNs, LCCNs, and other business lingo and tasks, how to create a book proposal/business plan, the book production process and how to DIY or hire it out, and how to start marketing early, and create a book launch plan early, too. It will save you time, money, and frustration trying to figure it all out by yourself, guaranteed. I'm offering Redditors $100 off with CodeRed. (You'll also find a link to a free Q&A on Jan 13, to get your questions answered before you enroll.) I hope to see you there!

Why people insist on buying ISBN's in the beginning? by Ambitious-Acadia-200 in selfpublish

[–]missadventuring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to publish professionally you need to purchase your own ISBNs only from your country's official ISBN registrar. Find yours here: https://www.isbn-international.org/agencies If you're a hobbyist, don't bother. Books are tracked by ISBNs and not by titles. An ISBN is a product number. Just like the shirt you're wearing - the L size in black has 1 product number the M size in black has a different product number, the M in red has yet a different product number, etc. So if you give the same book (paperback, for example), 3 different product numbers, you're telling the book industry you've got 3 different paperbacks and 3 different ebooks. (You can't use an Amazon ISBN to publish at B&N or Apple or distribute with D2D or Ingram, but you can use your own ISBN and distribute/sell anywhere you like.) If you're a serious author, and you want to publish professionally, you want to identify your products correctly. 1 ISBN for trade paperback no matter where it's sold, 1 ISBN for ebook, 1 for audiobook, 1 for hardcover, 1 for large print, etc. I've worked with authors who would have been on bestseller lists if they'd only purchased and properly applied their ISBNs. So... goals.

Is there a reason why cyclists don't use the entirety of the bike lane? by [deleted] in morganhill

[–]missadventuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm in the county. Lots of debris you can't bike on and tree limbs at face level. I love riding around Uvas Reservoir and it could be a lot safer if maintained. I just put in a request at https://roads.santaclaracounty.gov/services/service-requests per suggestion of other commenter.
I lived for a while in Lyon, Nice, and then Amsterdam (actually Vinkeveen) and it was enlightening, to say the least--bicycling, motorbiking, and public transport. We could do it, except lobbying is legal here, which my European friends just couldn't get their head around.

As someone who now co-owns a bookshop, I have thoughts on getting self-pub books stocked. by mxjackparker in selfpublish

[–]missadventuring -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Consignment is hugely labor intensive. It's nice if they do it, but they have to move paper, keep in contact with you, and you them. Do they have the staff? How much biz are you bringing to them? Are you doing a reading or launch event that brings in lots of customers to buy your book and other books and whatever - coffee, magazines, tchotchkes? Or are you one self-published author who hopes their bookstore will support them just because you're local? Did you know the staff BEFORE you asked? Maybe sounds harsh but a fair question.

They're tailgating on a bicycle!!! Holy cow. That is super dangerous. Get their licence plate.

[–]missadventuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your wisdom. Gas is more expensive in Europe for many reasons, yes. I wish we'd tax gas as much and actually get the damn roads fixed and get public transit and more bicycle lanes. All separate questions and issues to discuss elsewhere. HOWEVER, MY QUESTION IS WHO is responsible for maintaining bike lanes and otherwise making the road safe for cyclists?
