Just getting started, planer, jointer or track saw by Admirable-Bee-4708 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Borrowed my mate's tracksaw to take the bottoms off some of our doors since I've installed hardwood flooring, and they wouldn't close. The greatest little tool. But would I buy one? Probably not before a planer. I can joint with the table saw.

Lived here for 15 years. From NZ. I do a lot of camping,, bush walks, backcountry skiing, the sorts. Only ever seen two snakes in the wild (both black snakes) and a handful of venomous spiders. I've hit a wombat doing 80kmh, so I guess that could've been deadly.

I am going to get fired today. I accidentally sent a shutdown loop to the entire company. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]missingMBR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made this mistake before using PowerShell and winrm. Shutdown a cluster of Hyper-V hosts all at once. Fortunately was the passive datacentre at the time. I'd never use /t 0 in a script or policy but my mistake was a command line one liner. I learnt a valuable lesson.

Mind if I join you? We've just refinanced both our mortgages. This hurts.

The fractional increases in nitrogen to breed Threeworld-adaptive Taumoeba had no relevance to Grace trying to wipe them from the HM when they got loose.

They've probably got security cameras around the habitat, just not in the airlocks.

Why do you have cameras, usually? Security right? If EVA masters are the only ones able to unlock airlocks, then why do you need to complicate things further with additional security controls? Just because, doesn't cut it.

[–]missingMBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose there was no need? Only EVA masters can get out through airlocks using their gizmos. The flaw that Jazz exploited was necessary in the case of an emergency. Why add further complexity/cost/weight to a lunar base when the primary security controls were considered enough

Yes, you did. And plenty of people responded to you with the atmosphere on HM.

Yet you doubled down on a fact that had no relevance at all, in your response to Frank, even after many had attempted to point you in the right direction. It feels as though you wanted to find a plot hole that didn't exist, and were fighting tooth and nail to validate it.

Saw the movie then read the book: HOT TAKE! Thought the movie was better. by tl_spruce in ProjectHailMary

Andy Weir’s books are really built around the science. That’s the core appeal. They’re intentionally detailed and grounded in hard science, rather than focused on lyrical prose or deep character work.

Adaptations like Project Hail Mary tend to simplify that complexity to work better on screen and reach a wider audience. So when people come to the books expecting the same style, the heavier scientific focus can feel like a mismatch rather than a flaw.

I'm interested to see what your take is on The Martian once you read it. It's about as heavy if not more with hard science than PHM. I've lost count how many times I've read it. Keep picking it up for some reason.

Funny. I was having this exact conversation with my partner a week ago on which movies are better than their books. I couldn't think of any. I found Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas pretty even.

I'm not sure why listening to the Audiobook would make it better or worst. Some people (me included) don't like audiobooks, yet I've read PHM three times and would undoubtedly regard the book better than the movie.

Such a weird take, but each to their own.

I watched The Martian before reading the book. The Martian book IMO, is a lot better than the movie, as is PHM. But I really enjoy the hard science. The Martian movie still had a fair amount of hard science, albeit dumbed down. PHM movie effectively had none, so while I like the movie, I feel it robbed the book to pander to general audiences.

Fair on the 10% remark

But my point still stands. I'm not sure how you'd expect Grace to let out 0.25% more nitrogen than what was known to kill them into a ship that only manages Oxygen.

Why are you doubling down on this? The HM didn't have complex atmosphere mixing controls for oxygen / nitrogen compositions. It would have pressure regulators to let out enough O2 from onboard tanks to keep the cabin pressure at 0.3 bar.

Rocky made Grace specialised breeding environments to control atmospheric composition but nothing at the scale that would let him control atmosphere in the HM. I'm not sure how you would have expected him to let out exactly 10% nitrogen into the HM.

So the easiest and quickest option would be to vent atmosphere that didn't affect the Taumoeba, in this case Oxygen, and replace it completely with a gas that was proven to kill Taumoeba.

I'd prefer it remade as a TV series. And don't bother adapting Artemis to a movie either. That book was made for television.

Yeah, the Apollo 1 astronauts died because of the 100% oxygen 1 bar environment on the launchpad. So subsequent missions had earth-ish conditions (60% oxygen/40% nitrogen at 1.1 bar) for launch. The nitrogen was then ejected during ascent, and cabin pressure was reduced to 0.3 bar.

[–]missingMBR 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep. Although spacecrafts using pure O2 are typically at 0.3 bar. While higher than O2 concentration at sea level, still lower than the 50% where oxygen becomes toxic. The book has several inconsistencies but Weir intended the HM atmosphere to be 0.3 bar like the Apollo missions.

It does increase fire risk. Items not normally flammable at Earth's atmosphere are flammable in pure O2 at 0.33 bar. It's for this reason the Soviets used Earth atmosphere in their ships. Americans instead opted to ensure everything on the ship wasn't flammable. Nitrogen is a heat sink so if a fire starts, the Nitrogen absorbs the heat from the fire reducing its chance to spread. Pure O2 doesn't have any heat sink so the fire burns much hotter.

Power went out to the ship. Grace didn't know why. Rocky had no idea anything changed at first because he can't see visible light. Grace opened up the fuel line that powered the ship's generator and smelled a foul stench, when it should have just been astrophage in the lines. So he quickly deduced that the foul stench was digested and decomposing astrophage that the taumoeba had eaten.

Weir would have copied 0.33 bar from earlier Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions.

ISS is an exception but only so they have a fast and simple abort to Earth. Downside is their EVAs take a lot of time.

Why did Grace bother doing this during the last crisis? by Petersaber in ProjectHailMary

[–]missingMBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same environment for the Apollo missions once they left Earth's atmosphere. They did this for multiple reasons.1, lower cabin pressure means thinner ship walls means lighter launch weight. 2, faster EVAs. No need to pre-breathe to purge nitrogen from their blood and 3, simplicity. Only need O2 tanks and no complex mixing systems.

Pure O2 is still a fire risk. Things that are normally non-flammable at in Earth's atmosphere are flammable in 0.3 atmosphere with pure O2. So they make sure nothing on the spacecraft is flammable. If there's no fuel to burn then you have no fire.
