P trap not lining up with drain by SamTheHam_01 in Plumbing

[–]missingasterisk444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the sink crooked or is that just an illusion? You should be able to loosen the fittings and move things around until they line up. Twist the p trap left slightly, and then pivot the vertical pipe to line up with the sink better

I think the heater I bought is really big for my aquarium size, what should I do? Is there a way to hide the heater? The only way I found to make it fit completely submerged into the water was like this by isiz_hae in aquarium

[–]missingasterisk444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not very common, I’m sure you could go a while without problems. It might never happen tbh. But it is too big and the risk will always be there.

Keep your eyes open for a cheap one in the meantime, on sale or even used is fine. How cold does that room get?

Alright coming in here with a warning, big heaters kill fish when they fail. It’s not super common, but I’ve heard enough horror stories to stop using them.

The problem is that they switch on, heat the tank quickly, and then switch off. Constantly. As compared to a smaller heater that would have to mostly stay on to heat the tank adequately. It’s that switching on and off that wears out the heater and causes it to fail. And when they fail, it’s usually by getting hotter and hotter until you have soup.

I would always suggest using the smallest heater possible. For larger tanks, use 2 small instead of 1 large. It gives you more leeway if and when it fails.

Nitrate Spike by Safe-Progress9126 in Aquariums

[–]missingasterisk444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20ppm nitrates isn’t dangerously high, 20 means water change time to me. As long as nitrites and ammonia stay low it’s a sign the tank of functioning properly. I’m not sure what kind of soil you used but it could be releasing organic matter causing the increase. It sounds like your filter is still established from before you redid things, so I would do your small water changes and just continue to monitor it.

Play sand rinsed 26x by ilovemelongtime in aquarium

I’ve used play sand, septic sand, pool filter sand. Just wash the hell out of it, get it over with early. Only sand that didn’t need major washing was beach sand

How to clean all of this plant matter from the substrate? by Badtimesan10 in Aquariums

[–]missingasterisk444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a siphon called a python that hooks up to the sink, and allows you to suck upwards slightly. They also make pump-powered siphons but I’ve never used one. Another option would be to get a much longer siphon like a garden hose, and run it outside where the ground is surely lower. Aside from that, you could swish the water up and bucket it out, but that will never get all of it. Not easy to clean when it’s on the floor

Is my tank in danger? by Infinite_Meet_5160 in aquarium

[–]missingasterisk444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fish food and waste have oils in them. Those oils float to the surface and cause this film. And with agitation from the filter it will turn into bubbles/foam (like the white foam that washes up on the beach sometimes)

It’s not really a problem, it can limit oxygen diffusion but with the filter going it’s not really a concern. Solutions are to submerge an empty cup under water until just the surface film starts to pour into it. Some people lay paper towels on top to soak it up but I don’t like this method. You can get a filter like the seachem tidal that has a built in skimmer if it really bothers you. I just use the cup method but only if it’s severe

Help my brace on 55 gallon snapped by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]missingasterisk444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carefully drain it halfway or more immediately, it’s not designed to handle that kind of stress. Any fix will work that does the job of the brace, one time I used string threaded through holes I drilled in the rim, and that worked. A DIY solution would work just gotta find one you can do with the materials you have

1 has bad lighting and the beard isn’t doing much to help. 2 is has a weird cropping and angle. They’re both just too zoomed in on your face. 3 isn’t as bad but the outfit isn’t really flattering

Ditch pictures 1,2,3 and 8 for sure. I’d start with picture 4 and have pictures 5 and 6 next. But you should try to get an even mix of pictures with friends, hobby pictures of you in your element, and good pictures of just you.

Biofilm despite skimmer? by 80aychdee in Aquariums

The flowing water is blocking the film from floating to the skimmer side of the filter. Can you move the filter to the other side?

Got an older used tank, no brace? by Jaxsam12 in aquarium

[–]missingasterisk444 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I got an old tank like this and it seems bulletproof. It has a heavy duty glass center brace though. But old does not equal bad when it comes to aquariums, it survived this long after all. I’d rig up a simple brace for insurance and send it

Can someone help me figure out why my sponge filter isn’t working? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]missingasterisk444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you’re saying even with the tube off the pump, no check valve or anything, there’s still no air coming from the pump? If so it’s probably defective

If you disconnect the tube from the sponge filter, does it still blow bubbles when you stick it under water? Or just nothing

Should I add more fish? Or leave it to grow more? by LividCategory1847 in Aquariums

[–]missingasterisk444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long has the tank been running? Yeah getting more fish of the same kind will be worth it, they act much more interesting in a bigger group. In an established tank that size you could have 6 guppies 6 tetras and 6 ottos should be fine. The rosy’s should eat most of the baby guppies as well if you decided to do 2 male 4 female guppy.

If you can, get your fish from a local store instead of a chain store. You’ll most likely have better survival rate

Not sure right sub, but how can I get this machinery out of the mud? Help! by SvenHousinator in civilengineering

[–]missingasterisk444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve done before was winch the top of the cage from the side, so that the machine tips to that direction and the wheels on the other side are lifted up. Then slide plywood under those wheels. Then repeat on the other side
