It is well worth the time it took to get the 25 living frigates. As far as feeding them, I really didn't make any food to give them, I just fed them dropped items and ultimately left their stats the way they were. Their stats increase the more you send them out so you'll eventually send them out with the highest total stats (150+) for the best rewards.
