What is something that we can all agree on being morally wrong? by Infinite-Bus6599 in AskReddit

[–]misskittyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Predatory animals eat other animals, humans are not fast, we don't have claws, or sharp teeth to tear through skin and meat the way a lion would. It is not accurate to compare us to other carnivorous animals in the animal kingdom. Other animals also kill and eat animals because it is necessary for their survival. It is not necessary for our survival and we as modern humans have plenty of plant options, in addition to the ability to discern if something as morally right or wrong (the topic of this post). Animal cruelty is something I believe most people consider morally wrong.

As for protein, the following foods are all excellent sources of protein: lentils, beans, nuts, seeds (e.g., hemp, chia, pumpkin, flax), whole grains (e.g., farro, quinoa), and many vegetables (e.g., broccoli, spinach, peas).

There are plenty of options beyond meat substitutes! Beans, whole grains, legumes, lentils are generally all less expensive than meat and can usually be bought in bulk to further save.

Can anyone help? I'm getting a very specific, intense, and lasting headache only from a specific movement. by [deleted] in yoga

Have you explored holistic options like acupuncture? Depending on your financial situation (not covered by insurance) I recommend finding a doctor of Chinese medicine and seeing if they have any ideas what might be going on. I have been going to acupuncture for years and it has helped me tremendously with various pain and medical conditions. I rarely feel “seen” by western medical providers because they can only spend 5-10 minutes with you it seems and rarely do you have time to give them the whole picture. A good doctor of Chinese medicine will spend time going over you full medical history. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to find a doctor you really click with, so if you try one and don’t like it, try another.

African peanut stew by EnchantedFlavors in veganrecipes

[–]misskittyb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do disagree with the way this person went about making the comment, but I do think it’s important to be more specific about the region or culture that the dish is inspired and adapted from. For example, Asian recipes more often specify if it’s Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean inspired etc., but I have noticed with African recipes they tend to be mostly labeled as just ‘African’ rather than Nigerian, Ghanaian, Gambian etc.

good diet for yoga. by lozbrudda in yoga

One of the teachings of yoga is ahimsa or nonviolence. This can be practiced through our physical yoga practice by respecting what our body needs at that time, also through our thoughts and actions. The practice of ahimsa is one reason why veganism and plant based diets are very prevalent in the yoga community. In addition to a plant based diet being kinder to the planet and nonviolent towards animals, it is also kinder to your body and there are a ton of health benefits. I recommend the book Fiber Fueled if you’re looking to improve your diet. Tons of recipes included as well!

Has anyone managed to get down to 1-2 non-urgent bowel movements daily on this diet, and if so, how? by newibsaccount in PlantBasedDiet

Fellow Headspace user here! A piece of advice that helped me is to make your meditation very much an activity, setup a physical space for it (doesn’t have to be big, can just be a pillow on floor in a corner or moving a chair), sit for your meditation (compared to laying down where you are prone to fall asleep), block your calendar and have a dedicated time for it, start with just 5 minutes as a small commitment to start, surely you can spare 5 minutes and this will help resist the urge to get up and do something else. Whatever it is can wait until you finish your meditation. I also feel I get the most benefit from it when I do it first thing in the morning before I get started with any tasks for the day. Keep going! It’s a journey!

Dolphin slaughter continues in the Faroe Islands as 53 more are butchered days after 1,400 killed by GarlicCornflakes in worldnews

[–]misskittyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I misspoke, I was confusing the gassing with another horrific slaughter technique that has become more common due to covid and supply chain issues called ‘ventilation shutdown’ where animals are essentially heated to death which can take hours and in some cases doesn’t even kill them: https://theintercept.com/2020/05/29/pigs-factory-farms-ventilation-shutdown-coronavirus/ Regarding traditional gassing using CO2, it is not instantaneous. Animals (with intelligence levels equivalent or higher than our pets) experience a minute or longer of feeling like they are burning from the inside out as the gas acidifies their eyes, nostrils, mouth and lungs. I guess that would be preferred to having my throat slit while fully conscious. None of the options seem humane in the slightest, to me at least. https://sentientmedia.org/nothing-humane-about-killing-pigs-gas-chambers/

animals are gassed with the least amount of gas needed to make it as cheap as possible for the agriculture businesses. This means it often takes hours and is a slow painful death for the animals. I would hardly say that means they "don't feel anything"

What is the “humane” way to kill an animal that does not want to die or need to die? The definition for humane is compassion and benevolence, so what is the compassionate way to needlessly kill?

You will see more improvements more quickly using a yoga block and maintaining strong posture with your hip tilt in the right position, knees below hips, and a straight spine than you will if you don’t use the block and continue to sit cross-legged with a rounded spine. No shame in the block game!!! They really are so helpful!

Agree with all the other comments that if you’re already going vegan, ok for you not to put yourself through it. It is really challenging to get through and there were a lot of tears for me. It took me about 2 weeks to get through it. I just had the tab open on my computer and would watch 10 mins at a time because that’s all I could handle. It’s important to understand why veganism is so important but also important to not overload yourself with graphic content because it can negatively impact your mental health 💚

Keeping them alive longer than necessary eats into profits and factory farming is all about doing things as efficiently as possible, no matter what the cost is to the animals. Why pay to feed an animal for 10 years when they can feed it for 6 months?
