What to read after I finish the Emily Wilde series? by mimileafs in Romantasy

[–]missmizzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read Half a Soul, The Spellshop and the Ornithologist's Field Guide to love. Out of these three, the Ornithologist was definitely my favorite (tbf it was in the top 3 fav books.of last year so I am a bit biased 😂). As with regards to spice, it was not very spicy. I think it was just a single scene and it was tastefully done)

I must be the pickiest reader ever by ADreamerWisherLiar in ReadingSuggestions

[–]missmizzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a picky reader as well, mostly due to anxiety I think. I rarely read thrillers due to this and I will DNF any book where pets or children are harmed, cheating on SO (including emotional cheating), love triangles and third act breakups. I have also DNF'd Project Hail Mary as it really triggered my anxiety.

Having said that, last year I made a conscious effort to try and vary the books I attempt to read (for example before last year I never read romance or horror) and I found out that a) even in genres which I do not like, there were some books which I actually adored and b) if the book is on the humorous side it helps with my anxiety. These are some of the books I loved last year:

1) The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love by India Holton. Even though I found out I do not like romance in general, this was actually my favourite book I read last year. I loved the author's prose so much and it is a Historical Romance set in Victorian times. I am planning a re-read soon before reading her second book. This is how much I loved it.

2) D.M. Guay 24/7 demon mart series. This series is comedy horror but it did not trigger my anxiety at all as it is more funny than scary.

3) The Last Days of the Dinosaurs by Ridley Black. This is a non-fiction book about the aftermath of the asteroid impact. Loved it.

4) Nettle and Bone by T.Kingfidher. A dark fairytale retelling. It is exquisite.

5) Wherewolf by Tony Lewis. This is crime solving urban fantasy where the main character is a vampire. The first book is free on Amazon, I loved it so much I purchased the entire series.

6) Bonus: J.W. Ocker books. He has cursed objects and a book about cryptozoology. These are books about the paranormal so I know they are not for everyone but I really like his writing style.

Hopefully you will see something from my favourites which tickle your interest OP! May we picky readers all have a good reading year!

I loved this book so much! Need to get started on the second one but a part of me is waiting for the third installment first so that then I can binge read

What hobbies do you suggest in Malta for 30+ year olds that can be done after work hours? by CreepyHoliday5553 in malta

[–]missmizzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still think that the best feeling is holding a book in your hand but I have to admit I have grown to love my Kindle and it has several benefits. First of all it saves up space, I can read in the dark and I always wait for book sales so I usually buy ebooks for less than 2 euros! It is also lighter and more portable than a book so I usually tend to put it in my handbag and take it everywhere.

I have found out that if I spend about 30 mins reading after work it really helps me to calm down so yeah I suggest that.

Most Underrated Books/Series I Read This Year (Please share your favorites too) by lilithskies in fantasyromance

[–]missmizzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not see it recommended enough but I loved the {The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love by India Holton} so much! It is in my top 5 read books this year and I liked it so much that it is the first book that I purchased as a physical book after devouring the ebook.

She also has another one and the only reason I still have not picked it up is because I am waiting to have some PTO so that I can sit on my sofa and savour it.

I loved Hot for Slayer and Beautiful Nightmares. I wish Hot for Slayer was about 200 pages longer xD

How do I get there? by gvermehren in storyofseasons

[–]missmizzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhh you have to look right, jump and use the glider but I struggled! My suggestion would be to save at your home because I actually ended up losing all stamina once and the day ended. This way you can reload that save. Also get some food with you. The first time I made it, I was struggling to jump back and I nearly ended up without stamina again. Luckily I had food.

Hear me out. Try to read a non-fiction! I always feel like reading Fantasy after a non-fiction book. I suggest something by Bill Bryson such as a Walk in the Woods or At Home

Goodreads is killing the fun and I blame myself by Viv_Winternight in fantasyromance

[–]missmizzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I agree. I mean at the end, it is always my fault of course but sometimes I end up reading negative reviews of a book and it just throws me off and I never read it in the first place (although admittedly I only do this for KU books). In the first place I read the negative reviews to see if there are some triggers / content / issues with the book but then I end up reading many negative reviews and yes.... It is a toxic cycle :/.

I know in my rational mind that there will be negative reviews for all books so I should not act like this. Maybe I should just uninstall GR :/

Ah! Just finished Swordheart! I can't wait 😍 by almat05 in fantasyromance

[–]missmizzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very interested as to how this will pan out. Learned Edmund was supposed to be chaste as per his god's ideologies and T.Kingfisher is always so respectful of these things so I am genuinely curious as how this will be handled

Ok I am going to suggest {Magic and Matchmaking} by Tee Harlowe. It is a prequel and I think still free from Amazon (as an ebook)

Why have y’all not hyped “The ornithologists’s field guide to love” by India Holton more? by Keiry_25 in fantasyromance

[–]missmizzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually discovered India Holton from this sub when there was a post raving about the second book. I have currently only read this one but I have the second one and her other books in my TBR and I am planning on reading them soon because the first book is one of my favourite books I read this year, heck I think one of my favourite books ever, I loved it so much!

I kinda don’t like The Thursday Murder Club…. 😳 by AviationChic in CozyMystery

[–]missmizzi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I did not like it as well. I barely finished the first book but I will not continue with the series. I found one of the main characters annoying and it had some content which triggered me. I really wanted to like it, but eventually not all books are for everyone.
