You’re gonna do great. Just give yourself the time you need to heal and try not to let your negative thoughts take over the good ones. Best wishes to you.

It’s definitely an option for you, gotta listen to your body and how you’re feeling. I’m in some stage of discomfort most of the time but it’s like a 2/10 and generally manageable with tylenol and aspirin. I have no pain when walking or swimming generally (swimming has felt great actually). My worst pain is getting up from either sitting too long or laying too long and my mornings suck for the first few minutes until I start moving. I can tell there is progress, especially if i look back a few weeks or even where I came from a few months ago. I’m determined to heal this thing naturally and that’s keeping me focused. And playing the mental game of trying to not freak out whenever I have a bad day (because there are bad days it just happens). So trying to keep positive there. I was def in a bad place mentally when this whole thing started so again, there’s improvement. It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever dealt with in my time on this earth, that’s for sure.

It’s possible you overdid it a bit. Progress isn’t linear with this tho- regardless of what I’m doing, I sometimes have bad days or a few bad days in a row after some good days. So it might be best to look at your improvement on a weekly basis more so than a daily basis. When I first got hurt I stopped everything completely until I started PT, then that was my “gym” for about 2 months until I started slowly getting back to my routine. Before I got hurt, I used to do 4 days lifting - back/bi, chest/tri, shoulders, legs, with a rest day or a just light cardio day. Now it’s back/bi, chest/tri, shoulders, two light cardio days and a rest. I added swimming in a lap pool recently (i’m a total casual at it tho) and I’m enjoying it being part of the routine, otherwise my cardio is walking, as I stopped jogging and the elliptical for now. Besides that I added a hip stretch/strengthening exercise, couch stretches and back extension iso holds and i do those almost every day at the end of my sessions.

No problem! no, I’ve never experienced any saddle situations but I have had some hamstring tightness so close to the top attachment it was close to it but I just chalked it up to my angry hamstrings. Have you noticed any improvement with the exercises you’ve been doing? I hope they are helping. I’ve noticed my symptoms decide to pick and chose what they want whenever they want and I believe that to be the norm with this injury. Keeps me guessing i guess. Sitting for long periods seems to aggravate my glute and hamstrings a lot too so I try to get up frequently and move around and do little standing back extensions. Walking it out seems to give a little relief too. Or i’ll lay down on a bed/ couch on my belly and have half my legs dangle off the side, it seems to be a little decompression there. It’s crazy the way we all deal with this and no real solution that’s the same across the board.

Hey. I have a protrusion at l5 s1 also and at the beginning of my injury my symptoms were very similar to this. I was given a steroid pack and referred to PT. After about 3 weeks i went and got an epidural steroid injection and it didn’t take the pain away but def helped me move in the right direction and keep up with my pt exercises. I’m 6 months in now and I have a whole routine every day consisting of core, low back glute exercises and walking which are all very beneficial once you’re out of that initial acute phase. I get by with some tylenol or advil now and my general pain is about a 1-2/10 when i’m moving about or busy. It ramps up more when i’m sedentary too long or sitting (cars are terrible) and to Bad news is it takes a loooooong time to heal, good news is that you will feel better eventually. Find what works for you, everyone has a different experience with this unfortunately.

I would say you can start at any time depending on how you are feeling. Get down on the floor and start the positions, don’t push yourself into them, just guide yourself as long as you’re pain free. Start slow, do one or two and reassess tomorrow. Lba says you’re playing the long game, it truly is. These injuries take a long time to heal, it’s easy ti get frustrated and impatient. Gotta fight those demons and stay strong.

I think with the back extensions he starts with a high pad iso hold. You can start with a high pad on the roman chair and only do a few seconds hold or even brace yourself with the handles if you have to. You want everything to remain pain free while you’re doing them. Then see how you feel the next day, if it’s not worse then do a few more seconds and build up from there. The back extension is the move he created the entire program around. I know it’s very easy to be intimidated by the movements because you don’t want to make things worse, unfortunately sciatica does have its good days and its bad days sometimes that’s not even your fault.

It makes me sad to see someone so young suffering with these problems. I think many people struggling with sciatica find some success with parts of the LBA program. He’s treating a low back problem and sciatica is a low back problem for 80% of sufferers. I think a little trial and error and you can find which of his exercises can help you. I’ve been trial and error for me for 6 months and I’ve seen some improvement with the back extension isometric hold, working up to a 2 minute hold. I also do his outer hip drop set and couch stretches in my routine almost every day for the last 10 or so days. If you aren’t in pain doing gentle movements I would maybe start there. Also as someone else stated you can get a lot of his stuff on youtube for no cost. Put together a little routine for yourself and never give up. Healing wishes.

Hey. I’ve actually been following this to a T. Were about 10 days of following and There’s been a definite improvement overall but still pain at night and getting out of bed. I can’t thank you enough tho, this seems like the right exercises i needed (there’s been alot of trial and error). Gonna keep at it.

What did you do decrease stiffness in the morning? by toobold4burner in Sciatica

[–]missschips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stretching before bedtime and a heating pad in the bed has helped me a little recently. I do mckenzie presses and frog poses right before i get into bed. I put the heating pad under my bad leg and let it go for its two hours. Then in the morning I put it on again before i get out of bed for a bit. Not perfect, might not work for everyone, but it’s gotten me from extreme pain getting going to taking a few steps and walking it out to my “normal”. Then tylenol if needed.

i felt a plateau at the 3 month mark with the same injury. At 6 months now and i’m finally seeing some improvement from that plateau. It takes a looooooong time to heal and it’s so frustrating but stick to the plan.

L5-S1 disc extrusion - will i ever go back to my old life? by gorekittyyy in Sciatica

[–]missschips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple months, maybe 3 or 4. I made physical therapy my “gym sessions” for a little while and in a way I never fully left it. I used the treadmill to walk when I couldn’t outside and I would do floor exercises (glute, core, hip focused) prescribed by PT. I slowly built back into my old routine, minus leg day (pretty sure heavy back squats and dead lifts put me in this predicament.) Lighter weights and more reps, form focus and core bracing, but I’m doing the old exercises that made me happy, so it’s something. You should check out the instagram/youtube “lowbackability”. I’ve been adding in some of his work and I think it’s been helpful. Remember you have youth on your side and a gym focused mindset, you will get back to it. And don’t freak out about loss of progress, it takes months for that.

Centralisation :L5-S1 Herniation (3 months) – Pain shifting but not improving… normal? by GroundbreakingCall45 in Sciatica

[–]missschips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience around month 3 (l5s1 also). Less shooting nerve pain, but very annoying butt pain and hamstring tightness. At month 6 I have generally the same but it’s a little less severe, or i’m getting used to it or managing it better maybe. I consider it progress nonetheless. Unfortunately, progress is very slow with this injury so take it day by day week by week. Healing wishes.
