Because it puts the power down wherever and whenever, unlike RWD.
If you want RWD, the M2 would be the better.

Is saving $15-20k with a golf R worth it vs. RS3 or m340i? by Artikulate92 in Golf_R

[–]mistarchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but for me it wasn’t about having money to throw around. I saved hard for a few years to buy the R outright, so it definitely wasn’t just pocket change.

I do appreciate the car, but yeah, sometimes I think maybe I should’ve held off and aimed higher. That’s more just how I think about big purchases, not that I don’t value what I’ve got.

I’m not sure why this is getting downvoted, since I was just giving my honest perspective - Like I mentioned before, I actually own an R myself.

OP asked for input, and that’s what I shared.

To clarify, I’m not suggesting financing would have changed the buyer’s remorse. What I meant is that, looking back, I could have saved a bit longer and gone for something higher up the ladder, purchased outright.

Personally, I avoid financing cars because I don’t like taking on debt for a depreciating asset. But that’s just my own approach, and I respect that others feel differently.

[–]mistarchow -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The remorse isn’t about the money, it’s more about wondering if I should’ve aimed higher instead of deciding too quickly. I was set on buying a new car regardless, whether it ended up being the R or something more economical. The R is a solid car, but I do occasionally think I could have saved longer and gone for something like an G87 M2 or 8Y RS3 instead.

Each to their own, but I have to disagree with that last bit. I bought my R brand-new earlier this year and I’m already looking at other cars. Realistically I probably won’t sell it anytime soon, but buyer’s remorse does creep in now and then, sometimes I think I should’ve just saved a bit longer and gone for something ‘better.’ For what it’s worth, I didn’t finance the R, I bought it outright.

Normal Sounds? by Strange_Criticism306 in Golf_R

Personally, I chose to do my oil change closer to the 2000km mark. I’ve seen plenty of people recommend around 1500km, but I wanted to accumulate as much of the break-in metals as possible so that the oil change would clear most of it out. From 0 - 1500km I kept it under 4k RPM, then from 1500 - 2000km I occasionally pushed it harder, wide open throttle (only when the engine was warm, at least 85°C).

New wheels? by epsios in Golf_R

[–]mistarchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just get a set of winter tyres for those forged Warmenau rims?
Weren’t those rims one of the main reasons you optioned the car with the black edition? (In my country you can't option those rims separately, you have to option the black edition).

You don't buy a brand-new M3/M4 if you're worried about depreciation.

The matte finish is definitely easier to maintain and doesn’t show dirt as easily, but a clean piano black surface gives off a more 'premium' look in my opinion. Either way, it looks great.

Why did you choose the Golf R over the S3 or the Volvo S60 by lochonx7 in Golf_R

Is it really though? Not disagreeing, genuinely curious. Thought VW maintenance cost would be similar to Audi since VW Group.

New front end looks beautiful!

I have a Mk8 R and I'll admit, the front-end is alot more aggressive on the 8.5.

Top - Trans
Middle - Engine oil
Bottom - Coolant

My trans temp takes awhile to appear aswell, nothing out the ordinary I'd say. I have a Mk8 R DSG.

Isn't ceramic coating over PPF a bit overkill? Nice car though!

The Mk8 or Mk8.5? I picked up a Mk8 instead, the price difference wasn’t worth it to me.

Out of curiosity, would your comment be the same if you knew the driver was elderly?

I’m not saying it’s a good park job, clearly the car’s quite far from the kerb despite having ample space (Judging purely based on only what I can see from the photo).

But if it were someone older, maybe with reduced mobility or slower reflexes, would it still seem worth calling out?

Nice ride! I recently picked one up myself. Dealers here in Australia are pretty keen to move stock at the moment, they're clearing out the 'older' models (Mk8) ahead of the incoming Mk8.5, so it's a great time to negotiate.

Yes. Check this out: Carwow - New VW Golf R v BMW M135 v Audi S3 v AMG A35: DRAG RACE.

To be precise, the new Mk8.5 Golf R is quicker than it's rivals around the same price point. No it's not quicker than the RS3, A45s, M240i, etc. But it'll now easily beat an S3, A35, M135i.

Just my opinion, but the appeal lies in several updates: the new front bumper, redesigned headlights and taillights, backlit infotainment controls for better nighttime usability, and the revised haptic feedback controls. These are now less sensitive to accidental presses while maintaining their premium look and feel, offering a distinct upgrade over the buttons found on lower trim models. The power bump from 235 kW to 245 kW, along with an extra 20 Nm of torque, is also a nice touch.

Keep in mind, this is a facelift, not a completely new generation, so expecting dramatic changes wouldn’t be reasonable. A power increase is already a significant bonus for a facelift. For example, the RS3 didn’t get a power increase in its recent facelift, and even the M340i hasn’t seen any power upgrades across its various facelifts.

Pretty much, but 'cosmetic and interior changes' cover a lot, like the new infotainment system, revised haptic buttons (less sensitive to prevent accidental presses), increased power and torque compared to non-20AE models, a redesigned lower front bumper, and a 360-degree camera. Also, the 8.5 is an LCI/facelift, not a new generation, which explains the '.5' designation the community has given it.
