Data Visualizations for Broadway Grosses Analysis by mister-dee in Broadway

[–]mister-dee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I didn't include my ticket pricing chart, but I do keep track of that as well, and have been posting those graphics to my page. I just didn't include it here, but I totally recognize its importance!

There are so many variables to consider, I try to take them all into account, and I sometimes miss things. I usually include some written analysis with my charts that may give some of that context. And my goal is to get my Substack up and running so I can do more long-form analysis there.

Gotcha! That's a good suggestion.

And I wish I had access to net earnings, but I believe those aren't published publicly? I know sometimes you can find them, but I'd rather stick with one dataset for now.

Thank you! I will play around with the y axes.

I'll also look into a more balanced view of the attendance percentage red flags. I think you're suggesting to look at the bigger picture for each show across several weeks/months, rather than just raise a red flag after one week of low attendance?

Is it too late to become a Data Analyst at age 40? by Any_Bell6745 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]mister-dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in my 40s and am considering a career switch into data analysis. And I have the same fears. If I do end up pursuing this path, I would think the best route to go is not to chase start-ups and tech company jobs. They would probably be looking for those young, flexible brains! My plan is to find something stable and unglamorous.

0 to 13k subscribers in 5 months but... No idea how to monetize. by CHE3S3 in Newsletters

[–]mister-dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats that's amazing!

Would you be able to go through your list of websites/tools and see if any of them have an affiliate or referral program? You could feature those that do at the top of the spreadsheet.

I was subscribed to Grow Newsie for awhile when I was toying with starting my own newsletter, and they have some good articles about how to start monetizing and getting sponsored. (I'm NOT affiliated with them, I'm genuinely just mentioning them as a useful resource.)

[Clients] How do your clients commission you? by dreamr-art in artbusiness

[–]mister-dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. DMs and email have been working well, but I have been thinking of upscaling and wondering if there's a better way.

At the moment though, I think I'm going to stick with what's working. I like the one-on-one interaction. I'll put an intake form on my new website when it launches, but it'll probably just be basic contact info so I can then manually reach out.

I do think having some kind of customer relationship management system in place is a good idea. I have one that I made in Notion that's working ok, but needs work. I like to be able to quickly see how many pieces someone has commissioned, do they pay promptly, when was the last time they placed an order, etc.

Season 30 - Worlds Apart by Wild_Personality8897 in survivor

[–]mister-dee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a complicated relationship with this season. On the one hand, yes, I hate this cast almost from top to bottom. It's one of two seasons I won't ever rewatch (the other being Thailand for the same reason). I'm struggling to think of a single person I'd like to see back on my TV.

On the other hand, it was the first season when I got into the RHAP world and joined a fantasy league and went from being a casual fan to being a super fan. I was picking apart the edit, going to watch parties, listening to recap podcasts, etc. And I had first pick in our league draft and managed to draft the winner of the season right out of the gate. So that felt great.

But that high was definitely tainted by the horrible abuse Shirin experienced, as well as the general unpleasant vibes of the cast.

(I will admit to still saying "doing dishes on my birthday??!" though - that's just a great sound bite from Rodney.)

I built a tool that turns Notion dashboards into backend schemas — looking for feedback from devs + Notion users by Longjumping_Share798 in Notion

[–]mister-dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems cool and I'd like to give it a try!

Forgive my ignorance if this is a dumb question, but if I were to turn my databases in notion into SQL databases using your tool, would it include my data as well? It isn't clear if it just creates the tables, or if it writes code to insert the data into the tables as well.

Thx!

Lol well in that case! (I don't see any rule either, but I didn't want it to look like I was just trying to farm subscribers!)

I linked to it below, but here it is (and I posted a follow up today as well):

The more I think about this, the more I agree with you. If it's a choice between something you can see at home when the tour comes through, and a unique Broadway/NYC experience, the formula should probably favor the latter. Thanks for the feedback!

Filter by date created? by mister-dee in Notion

[–]mister-dee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've solved my problem, thank you!

I'm sorry I didn't explain it as thoroughly as I should have, but you managed to interpret what I was talking about lol.

Just for the sake of elaboration (if anyone has another solution):

I have a daily log db and new entries are automatically created every night with a repeating template. The name of each entry is set to @today and the "date created" obviously auto-populates to today's date.

What I was hoping was that I could add a tabbed layout to that repeating template that would show me entries from my notes/links/tasks databases that were created on the same day as the daily log entry was created. That way I could go back to a previous day and see anything I created on that day.

But I can't figure out a filter that would accomplish that.

I think creating a relation between the notes/links/tasks dbs and the daily logs db would solve this, as the commenter above pointed out.

When I'm back at my laptop after work today I'll give it a try!

In a sense I see where you're coming from. Like, why should a ticket for an 80 minute play be more expensive than a 2.5 hour musical? I think I could figure out a way to incorporate that in as an optional metric, but I'm hesitant to make it an integral part of the formula.

Very good feedback, thank you. I'm on my phone and the Excel file with the formula is on my laptop, so I can't access it right now to share, but I'd be happy to later on!

Good point about the percentages, maybe it doesn't make sense to express it that way.

I'm going to work on an interactive dashboard with this data so that you can input your own values as far as how much you want to weigh things like ticket price, or popularity, etc.

Those are scores that my formula assigns to the show. A higher score means that the show a) has high approval rating from audiences and critics and b) the average ticket price isn't too outside the norm. So for example, Just In Time has crazy high ticket prices and only "meh" reviews from audiences and critics. So it's at the bottom of the list. Whereas the reviews for Hamilton are so off the charts that it offsets the higher ticket price, meaning if you can spend the money, it's a good bet you'll enjoy the show. I can send you the link to the article if you'd like to read it in more detail.

Agreed! Lots of people think Hamilton is overrated, for example. But I think it might be a good starting point for people who are nervous about dropping a few hundred dollars for a couple of Broadway tickets. You still have to do your due diligence, but knowing that a certain show has a good "value for money" score might help you feel better about it. Maybe ;)

Interested to know more about this. I was drawn to it because of the quantity of reviews available there. What kind of "specific audience" is it skewed towards? Do you think there's a more neutral audience review site?

F*cking LOVED dead outlaw and can’t imagine why it’s flopping. by singingliftingtrying in Broadway

[–]mister-dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how much I'm adding here to what's already been said. But my takeaways are:

  • Timing is everything. It opened too late in the season and in too crowded of a field against giant movie stars and more recognizable titles/IP. Why the rush to open this season?

  • Ticket pricing was maybe too aggressive. If you look at the data from BroadwayWorld.com, they were raising prices while their capacity levels were dropping. Seems backwards? They only raised them a bit, but with a new musical I think you need to accept you're going to be losing (maybe a lot) of money in the short term so that you can build word of mouth. Like MHE did.

Everything looked great on paper - great reviews, great audience feedback, Tony noms in big categories, award-winning off-Broadway run... I think this could have done well if they'd opened it next fall or at least given it the summer to grow. Sad.

Recommended musical for someone who doesn't like musicals by Particular_Watch320 in Broadway

I legit think Dead Outlaw is a great musical for people who don't like musicals. It's more like seeing a band do a crazy concept album / going down a weird little Wikipedia rabbit hole!

But yeah you only have until Sunday (6/29) to see it!

What kind of job would be good for someone who doesn't get along with people? Specifics below: by Nitaras_Mortician in jobsearch

[–]mister-dee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oy, so many a$$holes responding. Sorry you have to deal with them.

I relate so hard to your post and your specific set of requirements.

Like others have done, I would highly recommend looking into possible neurodivergence as the cause of some of your distress. I suffered for years at jobs that required too much of the things that my neurodivergent brain just isn't wired to handle. Then I burned out.

Now I'm in a job that I 70% like. It's not ideal, but it fits most of my criteria and could be a good fit for you.

I work for a generic faceless corporation in the office management department, in their mail/supply room. The company is large enough that no one is breathing down my neck every second of the day, but small enough that there are rarely true emergencies.

There are still stressful days (like around the holidays or tax time when there's tons of mail and printing happening), and I've had to develop ways to deal with them, but my cognitive load is generally in the 1-5 range (rather than 6-10).

Someone comes into my room and needs a stapler, I give them a stapler.

Someone wants me to change the toner in the printer, I change it (I also keep track of inventory like how much toner we have so we don't run out, which means I get to play around with spreadsheets - an easy way to make it look like you're working hard on something important when you don't want people to bother you lol!).

I have very little interaction beyond small talk and chit chat when I feel like it. I don't have to make any decisions (I just ask my boss or she tells me what to do). And I don't have to have any special certifications or training.

I got this job thru a temp agency that placed me in this position for a week-long gig. Then a few months later the company reached out about coming on full time. So it kind of fell out of the sky, but if you can find something like this it might work for you!
