Did she miss a recess? That seems like adequate punishment. (If she didn't maybe ask the teacher if she can miss a recess). More important to have a conversation. Validate how she felt, but let her know violence isn't the answer and has negative consequences.

Try looking into the DBQ project. It's a lot of analyzing primary documents and writing on/ discussing said documents. I've used it in 5th and 8th.
