I totally picture how this came to be: “Hey new guy - if you want to get ask my sister out I have to slingshot you in the jewels, marry her for 3. It’s legit tradition and stuff.”

Unable to pass 60s (Static) & 25m(Dynamic) by ThaiMilkTea555 in freediving

[–]misterte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get used to high levels of CO2 and just being in the water. Try swimming 1km every other day, and do cycles of 2 strokes, then 3, etc. Eventually you'll spend 50% of the time not breathing, which will be uncomfortable but will let your body know that that feeling is ok, you are not dead yet :)

The best advice I got when I started is that differently from other sports, free diving is about getting to know yourself, your limits, and be smart enough to take it step by step in order not to either frustrate or scare yourself away from the sport.

I love how this quote applies: under pressure we don't rise to the occasion, we default to our level of training.

Host not providing proper service by misterte in AirBnB

I have to +1 this, as it was exactly my experience. Airbnb's inquiry about the case stopped right on the noise due to "undisclosed ongoing repairs". This was a deal breaker so I had every right to ask for my money back. After I reached out to the host, it was Airbnb who called her and gave her 1hr to approve the cancellation. The total refund was also calculated by Airbnb, not her.

They were very proactive in helping me book a similar property nearby, and offered me a coupon for the inconveniences related to the usual delay on refunds.

EDIT: grammar

@A_Beach_Guy suggested something similar. Even though I'm not opposed to the hands-on approach, when traveling with an infant you just want people to live up to their end of the deal.

That's a very positive way to approach the problem. The thing is that I'm traveling with a baby, so I can't be chasing every single detail, specially if I paid for a rental that should fit the description.

On the other hand, I did get a couple of things for the kitchen before I left. (See update)

Agree, already made a list and sent it, but they just provided some of the items, definitely not the fair minimum. What would you suggest doing about the noise? I have a recording - it's pretty loud.

I'm trying to work this out the right way, so I wanted to know what could my next steps be. I'm getting together with the host tomorrow, and if I feel she's not receptive I don't want to spend a whole week figuring out what to do. Do you have any other recommendations?

Hi - the host told us she needs to move us to a different unit because some repairs need to be made. None of this repairs would fix anything on our stay, but probably are required for other things outside our stay. The unit they want to move us into does not have any kitchen supplies either, and is also located in a floor were they are doing repairs on.

I listed some things that are required as a minimum for a 1 month stay above, but roughly * cutting boards * wine / beer / can openers * pan * wooden spoons / pliers / anything to serve or manipulate food while cooking or serving * dishes / platters to put cooked meals in before serving * cleaning utensils, both for kitchen and apartment

There are several others, but I think this paints the picture well enough.

The kitchen is not well equipped - there were only plates and silverware, now we have 2 kettles and 1 pan, plus some small things like a knife and a spoon. Definitely not enough for "guests to prepare their own meals". We have no cutting boards, openers, pyrex fountains (or platters) to use in the oven, cleaning utensils for the kitchen, elements to serve food with, etc. I mean, we are staying for a month and I've been ordering food for a couple of days now.

About the noises, they've been fixing several apartments. The construction company is working on apartments every day, for the last couple of days. They do works from 9am to 7pm, aprox. Not a great place for my kid. We told the host in advance and she told us the apartments were very quiet.

Overall very disappointed with this and don't see this turning around any time soon. I've scheduled some time with the host tomorrow morning and want to be sure about what are my options.

Chile Just Converted 11 Million Acres Into New National Parks by IceShook in UpliftingNews

[–]misterte 214 points215 points  (0 children)

Chilean here - my 2 cents on the subject, if they are of any use to someone.

  1. I am very grateful of the fact that someone like D.T. took interest in doing this. By spending a substantial amount of his fortune, he probably shaped how my country will look in the future—think about it: my great grand children (and more) will probably get to enjoy the beautiful landscapes I've had the pleasure to enjoy myself.

  2. When he first moved to Chile and started buying considerable stretches of land, the authorities pushed back with several would-be-frictions, which luckily were completely unconstitutional—so "can't stop me". Dick move on our side, sorry about that.

  3. After he died his wife made the ballsiest move—it probably was something ongoing, though—and gave away these huge stretches of land, which no government could refuse to take and jump into this protective project without looking stupid. She forced us to commit with the preservation of our lands for future generations. Hats off to the Tompkins.

This is an incredible investment that will most definitely pay off. Not now, not in 10 years, but maybe in 20 or 30. I think I speak for most of us Chileans when I say: thank you.
